Jason Pierre-Paul offers some words of wisdom on Instagram

See what Bucs outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul had to say to his fans on Instagram.

One of Bruce Arians’ goals entering the offseason — besides finding a new quarterback — was to try and keep his defense together. It seemed like a tall task considering guys like Shaq Barrett, Ndamukong Suh and Jason Pierre-Paul were all hitting free agency.

But as luck would have it, Tampa Bay was able to keep all three of those defensive stars, and perhaps the best signing was that of Jason Pierre-Paul. JPP played in only 10 games last season while recovering from a fractured neck he suffered last offseason, but in those 10 games he collected 8.5 sacks. If the Bucs can keep him healthy for a full 16 games, then Shaq Barrett’s single-season franchise record of 19.5 sacks, which he set last season, could be topped in 2020.

Pierre-Paul has a lot to offer on defense, but he also has some sage wisdom to offer his Instagram followers. Take a look at his recent post below.

Did Giants lose the Jason Pierre-Paul trade?

When the New York Giants traded DE Jason Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers it looked like a smart move, but hindsight is 20/20.

One of the first moves that Dave Gettleman did when he became the New York Giants’ general manager at the end of the 2017 season was pinpoint veterans with bloated contracts for potential trades.

One of those players was the embattled defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who was given a a four-year, $62 million extension ($40 million guaranteed) the previous March by Jerry Reese despite his history of injuries.

Gettleman found a suitor for JPP in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and dealt him in exchange for a 2018 third-round pick (B.J. Hill) and a 2018 fourth-round pick (Kyle Lauletta).

It appears the trade may have backfired on the pass-rush starved Giants. Even with only one functional hand, JPP managed seven sacks in 2016 (second on the Giants behind Olivier Vernon’s 8) and another 8.5 in 2017, which led the team.

The Giants got an immediate bump from Hill as a rookie in 2018, with a 5.5 sack rookie campaign, but he slid into a sophomore slump last year and didn’t record a sack, a QB hit or a tackle for a loss in the Giants’ first 14 games. In fact, Hill basically became an afterthought after the Giants traded for Leonard Williams. His snap counts waned as the season went on.

Lauletta never made an impact at all. He never distinguished himself as a viable backup for Eli Manning as a rookie and then was released during final cuts last summer. He is currently on the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster.

Meanwhile, Pierre-Paul has thrived in Tampa Bay. He has become the savvy veteran in the locker room who is sought for his counsel and leads by example as outlined by Luke Easterling in SI.com:

In his first season in Tampa Bay, Pierre-Paul racked up 12.5 sacks, tying the second-highest single-season total of his career (2014), and becoming the first Bucs player to post double-digit sacks in more than a decade (Simeon Rice).

The following offseason, however, Pierre-Paul once again found himself facing a career-threatening injury. A car accident had left him with a fractured neck, and many wondered whether or not he would ever see the field again. He missed the first six games of the 2019 season, and his contract was restructured to make him a free agent at the end of the season, with production incentives in reward him if he was able to return and make an impact. Make an impact he did, tallying 8.5 sacks over his 10 games.

When the trade was made, most Giant fans were in favor of it. JPP’s contract was a bit of an albatross around their necks, but a large portion of the guaranteed money had already been paid out.

A trade is only as good as what you get in return. In this case, the Giants lost. In 2018, they amassed just 30 sacks, which was tied for next to last in the NFL. Last season, without both JPP and Vernon, the Giants upped their total to 36, good for 22nd overall, but were buoyed by Markus Golden’s 10. Golden is currently a free agent and is unlikely to return to the Giants this season.

Report: Jason Pierre-Paul returning to Buccaneers on two-year deal

JPP played only 10 games in 2019 after suffering a fractured neck last offseason, but in those games, he totaled 8.5 sacks.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed the franchise tag on star linebacker Shaq Barrett today, keeping the 2019 NFL sack leader in the bay for at least another year, and, hopefully, longer.

But, that’s not the only big news of the day for the Bucs defense. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team has agreed on a new two-year deal with pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul. JPP played only 10 games in 2019 after suffering a fractured neck last offseason, but in those games, he totaled 8.5 sacks and helped draw some of the pressure off of Barrett. Bringing Pierre-Paul back along with Barrett ensures the Bucs’ defense will have two of their biggest stars playing for Todd Bowles for the foreseeable future.

Is it too soon for Bucs fans to start thinking playoffs? Of course not!

Gil Brandt of NFL.com thinks Jason Pierre-Paul should stay with the Buccaneers

See why Gil Brandt feels DE Jason Pierre-Paul would benefit by staying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers once free agency starts.

NFL free agency is scheduled to start next week, and based on the number of big-name free agents hitting the open market, it has the potential to rock the NFL landscape for the foreseeable future.

Guys like Tom Brady and Philip Rivers will test the free agency waters for the first time in their illustrious careers, while others like Jameis Winston may, unfortunately, be forced to find a new home if their respective teams decide to move on.

One Tampa Bay Buccaneers player sure to get a strong look from teams is Jason Pierre-Paul. The pass rusher, who missed the start of last season while recovering from a fractured neck suffered in the offseason, finished the year with 8.5 sacks in just 10 games. And while JPP may have posted a cryptic message last month implying his time in Tampa Bay could be over, Gil Brandt over at NFL.com says Pierre-Paul would be wise to stay where he is.

Per Brandt:

“[JPP] played a significant role in Barrett’s 19.5-sack season. After Barrett’s hot start (nine sacks in his first four games), opposing offensive lines began to focus on him, cutting down on his production — until Pierre-Paul returned from offseason neck surgery in Week 8, forcing opponents to account for two potent pass-rushing threats. Barrett went on to notch 10.5 more sacks in his final 10 games, while JPP added 8.5 of his own. If the Bucs lock down Barrett and make a competitive offer to JPP, he should think about re-teaming with Barrett and continuing to build on the momentum they established in Tampa last season.”

Bruce Arians has indicated that Barrett “ain’t going nowhere,” but it remains to be seen whether the Bucs will retain him via the franchise tag or a long-term deal.

Tampa Bay’s defense is on the rise, and JPP has shown he can dominate in Todd Bowles’ defense. The Bucs have a strong chance of making it to the postseason next year, and having Pierre-Paul on their roster would certainly help bolster their odds of making the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

2020 NFL Free Agency: Options from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Pending free agents from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who could fit with the New Orleans Saints include Ndamukong Suh and Breshad Perriman.

[jwplayer cusZJgLO-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints will need to address some holes with their squad through free agency this offseason. As such, we continue to dissect every NFL team’s pending free agents and which could be a potential fit for the Saints in 2020 and beyond.

We take a look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which has 24 potential free agents heading into the new league season. Here are all 24 players:

  • DT Ndamukong Suh
  • QB Jameis Winston
  • RT Demar Dotson
  • DT Beau Allen
  • OLB Shaquil Barrett
  • WR Breshad Perriman
  • DE Jason Pierre-Paul
  • RB Peyton Barber
  • QB Blaine Gabbert
  • FS Darian Stewart
  • OLB Sam Acho
  • OLB Carl Nassib
  • DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches
  • ILB Kevin Minter
  • G Earl Watford
  • RT Josh Wells
  • CB Ryan Smith
  • S Andrew Adams
  • T Jerald Hawkins
  • G Michael Liedtke (RFA)
  • TE Anthony Auclair (RFA)
  • TE Tanner Hudson (ERFA)
  • CB Orion Stewart (ERFA)
  • WR Bryan Mitchell (ERFA)

Perhaps the biggest fish on this list is pass-rusher Shaquill Barrett. A relative unknown prior to 2019, he made a splash in a big way this past season. The linebacker recorded 19.5 sacks, and another six forced fumbles. Barrett will get paid this offseason but it will be interesting how teams value his single season of production.

Another name that could be a suitable addition is defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. New Orleans will most likely need to make some additions to the defensive front line, and a leader like Pierre-Paul could go a long way for the club in 2020. Unlike Ndamukong Suh, Pierre-Paul does not have history with the Saints, and might be a welcome addition to the locker room.

However, the top free agent to watch is wide receiver Breshad Perriman. He really impressed down the stretch when Mike Evans and Chris Godwin were injured, forcing him into the top spot, and Perriman might be what the Saints need opposite Michael Thomas as a sure-handed vertical threat.

Vikings free agency options: Edge Rusher

Should the Vikings try and sign an edge rusher in free agency?

Minnesota’s starting defensive ends combined for 22.5 sacks last season, but only one of those players is still under contract.

Everson Griffen voided his contract with the team, and will enter free agency. Zimmer seems optimistic that the team can re-sign Griffen, but there are also other options to keep an eye on.

Here are some of those options.

The Texans’ D.J. Reader

Reader’s ability to play both defensive tackle and defensive end provides versatility to a team, especially one like the Vikings. Defensive tackle Linval Joseph might be a cap casualty, so the Vikings could use depth at both positions on the defensive line.

Reader might not command as big of a price as edge rushers like Shaquil Barrett, either. Reader had just 2.5 sacks in 2019, but Pro Football Focus thought there was more to his game this season, giving him an 87.6 out of 100.

The Buccaneers’ Jason Pierre-Paul

Pierre-Paul is coming off a year in which he had 8.5 sacks on a team that is in the midst of a rebuild. It seems like Tampa Bay is a few years away from contending. The Buccaneers have a lot of salary cap room, but Barrett is entering free agency, and Over The Cap listed his 2019 valuation at more than $17.7 million.

He could earn even more than that per year in free agency, so maybe Tampa Bay wants to focus on him, and other players, only to let the 32-year-old Pierre-Paul walk. Another factor: Pierre-Paul’s age might make him more inclined to find a contending team in the free agency market. That team could be the Vikings.

Arians says bringing back the entire defense is ‘very realistic’

Hear what Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians had to say at the NFL Scouting Combine regarding the future of the team’s defense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians joined NFL Network’s NFL NOW program to discuss Shaquil Barrett and the entire defensive front seven’s future with the Buccaneers.

“Well, I think, it’s how you get it done,” Arians replied to Andrew Siciliano about how you get a deal done with Barrett, who is likely in store for a large payday this offseason. “How did he get it done? Great worker, tremendous talent. It wasn’t like guys were falling down in front of him. He was getting them. The defense fits him perfectly and I think Todd Bowles utilized him tremendously. Having Jason Pierre-Paul back on the other side would help also. So we are trying to make sure we keep our pass rushers.”

“It’s very realistic to bring them all back,” Arians said of bringing back the Buccaneers front seven on defense. “They all enjoyed playing defense for Todd [Bowles] and our organization. It’s just a matter of getting them paid.”

Arians also made a note that he was not too happy about the uniform changes because he has great style and wasn’t approached.

Maurice Jones-Drew predicts the Bucs go defense in his first mock draft

See which player Maurice Jones-Drew thinks the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will snag with the 14th pick in April’s 2020 NFL Draft.

We’ve had 2020 mock drafts coming at us left and right since the 2019 NFL season ended, and today is no exception.

NFL analyst and former running back Maurice Jones-Drew is getting in on the action, releasing his first mock draft today. While some of his NFL Network colleagues have suggested the Bucs will look to find their next franchise quarterback with the 14th pick in April’s draft, MJD is sticking with defense and predicting Tampa Bay will select defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw out of South Carolina.

Per MJD:

“Kinlaw is a man among boys. This will be a value pick for the Bucs, and they can’t pass on this type of talent — keep in mind that Ndamukong Suh is a pending free agent.”

While it remains to be seen whether or not Suh returns to the Bucs next year, star pass-rusher Jason Pierre-Paul recently posted this cryptic message on Instagram, leading many to wonder if his time in a Bucs uniform is over.

The Bucs’ draft priorities will again become clearer once we see what they do at the start of free agency. Still, Kinlaw would be a great addition no matter what.

New York Giants: 11 defining moments of the decade

As the 2010s come to a close, here’s a look back at the 11 defining moments of the decade for the New York Giants.

The 2010s were a decade of highs and lows for the New York Giants. Unfortunately there were much more lows than highs.

But we here at Giants Wire have compiled the top 10 memorable moments of the decade, some of them not in any particular order.

Andrew Mills/THE STAR-LEDGER via USA TODAY Sports

Victor Cruz’ 99-yard TD vs Jets

On Christmas Eve 2011, the Giants came into the game with a 7-7 record and needed a spark to help jettison them past Gang Green and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Trailing 7-3 in the second quarter and facing a third-and-10 from their own one-yard line, Eli Manning hit Cruz underneath. Cruz then broke several tackles and raced 99 yards for the go-ahead score.

That play spring-boarded the Giants to a 29-14 victory. They carried that momentum the rest of the way, defeating Dallas the next week for the NFC East title and then ran the table all the way through Super Bowl XLVI.

Jason Pierre-Paul is getting into the holiday spirit

See a festive Jason Pierre-Paul boarding the team plane for Detroit.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head into Detroit in Week 15 to take on the woeful Lions. The Bucs may already be eliminated from the playoffs, but a win Sunday would make it four-straight for Bruce Arians’ squad and pull their record back to .500.

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Bucs, highlighted by their brutal five-game stretch away from home earlier in the year. But, this team has a lot to be thankful for. They’ve seen the emergence of third-year receiver Chris Godwin, who has not only solidified himself as a true No. 2, but also has a chance to break the franchise’s single-season receiving mark.

On the defensive side, the team couldn’t be happier to have defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul back in the mix. JPP suffered a fractured neck in a single-car accident during the offseason, which put his season in doubt. But, Pierre-Paul has come back strong and seems to be enjoying life (and the holidays) as the team headed to Detroit today.

Take a look.

You’ve got to admit, he does make red look good. JPP seems like a happy guy just as long as he doesn’t catch you taking pictures of his car.
