4 positions for the Eagles that don’t need much attention in 2020

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to make sweeping changes to their roster, but they can be confident in what they have in certain positions.

The Eagles will likely overhaul things at wide receiver and cornerback, but there are several key positions that will only require minor changes or some subtle additions.

Here are four positions for the Eagles that don’t need much attention during the 2020 offseason.

1. Quarterback

Carson Wentz is coming off arguably his best and most complete season as a pro. Wentz started all, 16 regular-season games, became the franchise’s first 4,000-yard passer and led the Eagles to another division title.

Nate Sudfeld didn’t play this season, but he’s still a capable quarterback and will probably be better served to return to the Eagles rather than seeking a starting spot in free agency.

Jason Peters future deemed the Eagles biggest looming 2020 free agent decision

The Philadelphia Eagles will start out NFL free agency with almost $50 million in salary-cap space according to Over The Cap, and there are some huge decisions to make.

Changes are coming to the roster and several players won’t return. The biggest decision in free agency for the Eagles appears to be left tackle Jason Peters, who’s a future Hall of Famer but has seen his play regress over the years.

Peters wants to return but with the Eagles using a first-round pick on Andre Dillard in 2019, Howie Roseman has a decision to make that ESPN deems the most important for Philadelphia this offseason.

The Eagles invested a first-round pick in the 2019 draft on tackle Andre Dillard to be Peters’ successor. But is he ready to take over? The coaching staff will have to give an honest assessment of that before the front office decides to move on from Peters, 37, who is not as dominant as he once was but remains better than most. — Tim McManus

Peters entered the late weeks of the 2019 season as one of the highest-graded linemen in football, so his production still is without question. Peters has hinted at switching positions and could be a candidate to play guard if needed.

NFL Free Agency: A look at the Eagles 2020 free agents

NFL Free Agency: A look at the Eagles 2020 free agents

The Philadelphia Eagles’ have done a good job keeping their best players under contract for the long-term, but with age and attrition starting to chip away at this team, it’s time for a reboot towards a younger roster.

With plenty of room under the salary cap, Will Howie Roseman and the Eagles look to continue to take care of their own with contract extensions and re-signings, or will the roster look drastically different thanks to players being allowed to walk in free agency?

Here’s an early look at which Eagles players are currently scheduled to become free agents including select players who have team options for the 2020 season.

***

Nelson Agholor WR 27 UFA –

The Eagles exercised Agholor’s 2019 fifth-year option last offseason, and he had one of the worst seasons of his career. Agholor missed the bulk of the Eagles playoff run with a knee injury and the team played better without him. Agholor will likely walk in free agency and could still make good money as a slot receiver on the open market.

Nigel Bradham OLB 30 CO –

The Eagles hold a team option for Bradham and they should let him walk. The Eagles can address the middle linebacker spot via the draft or free agency, while T.J. Edwards looks ready to start in Bradham’s place.

Deontay Burnett WR 22 ERFA –

Corey Clement RB 25 RFA –

A restricted free agent, the Eagles could bring back Clement utilizing one of the four tenders. He’s talented, explosive and can only add to the running game.

Vinny Curry DE 32 UFA –

Ronald Darby CB 26 UFA –

Darby returned to the Eagles in 2019 after signing a one year deal and he again finished the season on injured reserve. Darby is likely to move on as the Eagles look to restructure the secondary.

Shelton Gibson WR 25 ERFA –

Kamu Grugier-Hill OLB UFA –

Grugier-Hill finished the season on a sour note, losing reps after some dishonesty about a concussion he suffered.

Jordan Howard RB 25 UFA –

At the beginning of the season, he looked like a keeper but with the emergence of Boston Scott and Miles Sanders, the Eagles could decide to look elsewhere and spend that capital on another skill player.

Craig James CB 24 ERFA –

Timmy Jernigan DT 27 UFA –

Cameron Johnston P ERFA –

Josh McCown QB 41 UFA –

McCown could decide to retire and continue to coach his son’s football team. He’d be a great addition to the Eagles coaching staff he made that choice.

Rodney McLeod FS 30 UFA –

McLeod and Jenkins both want new deals and the Eagles are only likely to keep one.

Jalen Mills S 26 UFA –

Jason Peters LT 38 UFA –

The Eagles will have a decision to make on Peters, who’ll be one of the top free agents if he decides to continue playing.

Hassan Ridgeway DT 25 UFA –
Richard Rodgers TE 28 UFA –
Darren Sproles RB 37 UFA –

Nate Sudfeld QB 26 UFA –

Sudfeld didn’t play any snaps this season after suffering an injury during the preseason. He’s likely to return to Philadelphia as Carson Wentz’s backup.

Halapoulivaati Vaitai G UFA –

Vaitai will likely cash out as a free agent because of the versatility he brings in playing both guard and tackle.

Eagles LT Jason Peters listed among the 50 best available 2020 NFL free agents

Jason Peters is the No. 41 best available free agent according to Pro Football Focus

Jason Peters wants to continue his NFL career and if you evaluate him based on analytics and a proper grading system, he’ll likely have a list of suitors when free agency begins.

Pro Football Focus recently put out their initial list of the top-50 NFL free agents for the 2020 offseason, and the Eagles left tackle landed on the list at No. 41.

41. LT JASON PETERS
Somehow Jason Peters is still plying his trade at an extremely high level despite approaching 38 years of age. That age obviously makes Peters a short-term option for prospective teams, and Peters also comes with a significant injury history and the prospect that he might not last 16 games in any given season. But he is still an impressive figure when he is on the field, and he ended the 2019 season with an overall PFF grade of 82.8 after allowing 25 total pressures on the season. Peters won’t be receiving many multi-year offers, but he could provide a very useful short-term fix for a team struggling to find answers on the offensive line.

Peter is still talented enough to play in the NFL on a year to year basis, but it’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles allow the future Hall of Famer to walk in free agency.

Howie Roseman made it clear during his end of the season press conference, that the Eagles were interested in getting younger. With 2019 first-round pick Andre Dillard waiting in the wings, the Eagles will have to decide on bring Peters back for another year, moving Peters to a different position or allowing him to play for another franchise.

4 takeaways from Howie Roseman, Eagles’ end-of-season press conference

The Philadelphia Eagles held their end of the season press conference, with both Howie Roseman and Doug Pederson addressing the media for the final time.

“We stand up here with a range of emotions,” Roseman said via NJ.com. “I think the first emotion is a disappointment. Disappointment that we’re not practicing this week for the Green Bay Packers and disappointment that we did not achieve the goals that we set out when we started training camp. And I think when you have a disappointing season, it’s not just on the players and coaches, it’s also on the front office and that starts with me and I’m sorry to our fans, they give us tremendous support.”

The Birds have been playoff participants for three straight seasons and won another division title, but age, injury, and attrition have changed the outlook of this team going forward. During his Wednesday presser, Eagles GM Howie Roseman was adamant that changes were coming to the roster and front office personnel while confirming that this team needs to get younger and fast.

With the Eagles now full-speed into an offseason reload centered around getting the most out of Carson Wentz, here are four takeaways from Wednesday’s press conference.

1. Youth Movement is underway

The Eagles had one of the NFL’s oldest teams over the past two seasons and that was by design, as Howie Roseman and company felt they had a two-year window with the roster as constructed. That is no longer the case and a lot of the names presently on the roster won’t be around at the start of the new league year. The Eagles currently have 10 draft picks (compensatory included)

Howie Roseman makes it clear that changes are coming as Eagles look to get younger

The Eagles top executive addressed the media on Wednesday for the first time since training camp and while addressing the media, Howie Roseman made it clear that sweeping changes were coming.

Roseman talked about attachments to veteran players being a “weakness”, while acknowledging that the Eagles will look dramatically different next season.
In deciding to not address Malcolm Jenkins’ contract status while speaking about getting in younger in key areas, Roseman made it sound as if nobody is safe on the roster outside of Carson Wentz, Miles Sanders, Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, the offensive line, Fletcher Cox and maybe T.J. Edwards.

When speaking about Jenkins and Jason Peters specifically, Roseman said that he hasn’t started the offseason evaluation process.

“You need guys who have been through it. I think that you saw that for us…We haven’t gotten into the evaluation of any of this. We haven’t decided on our plan going forward.”

On the prospects of getting younger and more explosive at key positions, Roseman sounded unsure if he was referring to the Eagles current crop of young guys, or exploring that addition via the draft and free agency.

“It’s a great lesson and you have to let young players. We have to allow these young players to grow and get some experience. We have to balance that.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Nelson Agholor and Jordan Howard are both likely to return. Jason Peters — in some eyes — has earned the right to decide what he’ll do, but with Roseman focusing on attachment issues, could the Eagles move on from their future Hall of Fame left tackle?

That question and several more will start to be answered over the next few months.

Jason Peters open up on whether he’s ready to retire; If he’d play for a team other than the Eagles

Jason Peters says he’s not retiring will play the 2020 NFL season

Jason Peters finished the 2019 NFL as one of the highest-graded tackles in the NFL and despite slippage in his play, he was still a valuable asset to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Immediately after the Eagles 17-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Lincoln Financial Field, Peters put the onus on team management, making it clear that he wasn’t ready to retire, and in fact, doubling down saying that he would return to the NFL in 2020.

When asked if he’d play for another team, Peters stated that he’d only play for the Eagles. Peters gave no word on whether he’d be cool with being a backup at this stage in his career.

Eagles estimated injury report: Miles Sanders, Nelson Agholor DNP; 7 other players listed as limited

The Philadelphia Eagles released their first injury report of the week and seven players were limited participants, while Miles Sanders and Nelson Agholor did not participate.

The Philadelphia Eagles released their first injury report in advance of Sunday’s matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Eagles held a walkthrough, so it’s an estimated injury report, but Miles Sanders and Nelson Agholor would not have participated had the team practiced.

Seven other Eagles were limited participants and they included, Derek Barnett (ankle), Fletcher Cox (triceps), Zach Ertz (ribs, back), Lane Johnson (ankle).

Sidney Jones popped up on the report with a back injury, while Avonte Maddox (abdomen) and Jalen Mills (ankle) should be good to go for Sunday.

Doug Pederson says Jason Peters has had a very productive 2019 season

Doug Pederson says Jason Peters has had a very productive 2019 season

There’s been a ton of conversation recently surrounding the future of left tackle Jason Peters and how much he has left in the tank.

Peters is one of the best left tackles in NFL history, and if you ask him, he’s still among the best currently doing it.

You tell me, somebody, better than me, and I’ll walk away from the game.”

“You got somebody?”

Peters caught flak for his performance against the Cowboys where he was called for a costly holding penalty and a strip-sack that was eventually recovered by the Eagles.

Peters has played 12 games this season and missed three weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery. Even with his struggles this season, head coach Doug Pederson told reporters on Friday that “Peters is still very productive” and has done a nice job this season.

“Where he is in his career and what he’s done, I think he’s had a very productive season. And here lately coming back from the procedure he had, he feels good. He’s another one probably not 100% at this time of the year, but he feels good. We give him the rest during the week and give him some reps later in the week. Today will be a big day for him to get back out on the field.

But he’s done a nice job for us and still very productive.”

Peters has been flagged nine times this season, including five false starts, but he’s remained among the highest graded left tackles in football despite that.

He was No. 10 in a ranking of the top-25 offensive linemen conducted two weeks ago and depending on how things shake out, could end up in another Pro Bowl.

Doug Pederson provides an update on Zach Ertz, Lane Johnson, more

Doug Pederson provides an update on Zach Ertz, Lane Johnson, more

The Philadelphia Eagles received some really good news on Friday when Doug Pederson announced that Jordan Howard was returning to the lineup after a five-game absence.

Howard was cleared for contact and will be eased back into the lineup.

Howard was the Eagles’ leading rusher with 119 carries for 525 yards and six touchdowns before suffering his injury.

Pederson provided an update on Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz, stating that both players are progressing well.

Both players are unlikely to play on Sunday and it’ll serve the Eagles well to rest both Ertz and Johnson, allowing them more time to get healthy in advance of the Wild Card round next weekend.
