Seahawks 2023 practice squad tracker: DE Hamilcar Rashed signs

Our practice squad tracker is updated.

The Seattle Seahawks lost their second-year outside linebacker Tyreke Smith this week when he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals off their practice squad. The team has just announced that they’ve signed former Oregon State defensive end Hamilcar Rashed to take Smith’s place.

Our practice squad tracker is updated (Dec. 15).

Mallett, Hillis, Peters headline 2024 Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame class

Ryan Mallett, Peyton Hillis and Jason Peters headline a 10-member Class of 2024.

Ten icons of sports in the Natural State were announced as the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 over the weekend.

Three of the 10 are former Arkansas football players.

Quarterback Ryan Mallett, running back Peyton Hillis and tight end/offensive lineman Jason Peters headlined the class that also includes Carla Crowder, Glen Day, Jeff Glassbrenner, Al Flanigan, Ed Harris and Eric Jackson.

Peters is largely considered the greatest NFL player to come out of Arkansas. He played tight end for the Razorbacks from 2000-2003, but made a major mark in the pros where he has been named a Pro Bowler nine times and an All-Pro seven times. Peters is now in his 19th year in the league, playing tackle for the Seattle Seahawks.

Hillis is a native of Conway and played fullback for Arkansas from 2004-2007. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but exceeded expectations by having a seven-year career. His best season was in 2010 when he ran for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns, a year good enough to see him named cover athlete for the Madden video game franchise heading into the following year.

Mallett is a Texarkana graduate who also spent a bulk of his childhood in nearby Lincoln. After a season at Michigan, Mallett transferred to Arkansas where in just two years he became the schol’s all-time leading passer before playing in the NFL for six seasons. Tragically, Mallett drowned in the summer of 2023.

The introduction ceremony for the Hall of Fame will take place April 19, 2024.

Seahawks 53-man roster tracker: QB, LB elevated from practice squad

Our 53-man roster tracker is updated.

The Seattle Seahawks announced a couple of practice squad elevations on Saturday ahead of today’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Recently re-signed third-string quarterback Sean Mannion has been elevated as a contingency in case starter Geno Smith is unable to play. Smith is listed as questionable with elbow and groin injuries. The Seahawks also elevated linebacker Patrick O’Connell, who gives them some extra depth in case Jordyn Brooks is inactive – he is also listed as questionable.

Here’s the team’s updated 53-man roster by jersey number (Dec. 10).

Tyler Lockett ‘absolutely not’ planning to play as long as Jason Peters

Tyler Lockett ‘absolutely not’ planning to play as long as Jason Peters

Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver Tyler Lockett has quietly become one of the most tenured players on the team. Originally selected in the 2015 NFL draft, Lockett is now in his ninth season and has crafted an incredible career with the Seahawks.

While Lockett may be one of the longer lasting Seattle players, his time in the NFL is nothing compared to that of his teammate Jason Peters. Thanks to improvements in medicine and diet, players are lasting longer in today’s NFL than ever before. Peters is a prime example of this, as he is now in his 20th season.

Although, it does not seem like Lockett wants to be in the same camp as Peters:

Fortunately for Seahawks fans, Lockett is still committed right now and is back to his usual high level of play.

Seahawks trade for Giants DL Leonard Williams

Seahawks 53-man roster tracker: Leonard Williams in, Cody Thompson out

Here’s the updated 53-man roster by jersey number going into tomorrow’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

The Seahawks are serious about making a deep postseason run this year. Just hours after their home win over the Browns, Seattle pulled off a trade that should help them get there. The front office has sent a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-rounder to the Giants in exchange for Leonard Williams, one of the top interior pass rushers in the league.

To make room for Wiliams, the Seahawks have waived wide receiver Cody Thompson. Our roster tracker is now updated (Oct. 31).

Seahawks injury updates: Tyler Lockett, Jamal Adams, more

Injury updates for the Seahawks heading into their Week 8 game against the Browns

A lot of Seahawks have been bitten by the injury bug this season. Wednesday’s initial injury report was about as long as it gets at any point in the year, let alone before midseason. The list of DNPs was eight names long, followed by another seven that were limited. Whether it’s just bad luck or a carry-over from a training camp that the front office has since admitted got a little too physical, it seems like they’ll have to embrace the next-man-up mantra the rest of the season.

There are at least two silver linings this week, though. Heading into today’s home game against the Browns, two players are listed as questionable and both should be good to go. As head coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Friday and Ian Rapoport reminded us all today, wide receiver Tyler Lockett (hamstring) and strong safety Jamal Adams (knee) are both expected to play.

Through six games Lockett has 27 catches, 289 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Adams has appeared in three games, totaling 12 tackles.

One player is listed as doubtful for today’s game – guard Phil Haynes. He will be replaced by rookie Anthony Bradford, who’s shown tremendous promise, at least as a run blocker.

The biggest injury though is still the mysterious knee issue for right tackle Abe Lucas. He is still on the injured reserve list and it doesn’t sound like Carroll is confident he will return anytime soon. How to replace Lucas may be the single greatest x-factor in today’s game.

Since Charles Cross returned at left tackle, the Seahawks have been able to move Stone Forsythe over to the right side and replace Jake Curhan, who had been the weakest link in the chain. While Forsythe is an upgrade over Curhan it’s a low bar. So, we may see 41-year old veteran Jason Peters – who’s been elevated from the practice squad – take over at right tackle and do his best to contain Myles Garrett.

7 things to know going into Week 8 game between Seahawks, Browns

Jason Peters talks about mentoring young Seahawks offensive line

In football, there’s an old saying: “it’s not the X’s and O’s, but the Jimmy’s and Joe’s.”

The Seattle Seahawks made an interesting roster move between Weeks 1 and 2 when they brought in veteran offensive lineman Jason Peters. Dealing with injuries to both Charles Cross and Abe Lucas, Seattle needed to bolster their depth. Ultimately, Peters did not play and the backup tackles were exceptional against the Lions.

But what Peters brings to the table is far more than skill on the field. Peters has been around the league a while – if he plays, this will be his twentieth season in the NFL. The 41-year-old has certainly picked up a thing or two along the way. The knowledge Peters has amassed is something he is more than willing to share with those younger than him.

It’s the knowledge that has allowed Peters to make an immediate impact, as he immediately began to mentor Seattle’s offensive line. Something the Seahawks coaching staff did not ask of him.

“When I first got here I gave them a couple of pointers on top of (offensive line) coach Andy (Dickerson) telling them. They listen to what you tell them and they applied it to the game. … They’re willing to listen and willing to grow.”

In football, there’s an old saying: “it’s not the X’s and O’s, but the Jimmy’s and Joe’s.” You can have all the talent and scheming ability in the world, but when it comes down to it, you need the human element of the sport. Sometimes simply having a man like Peters physically in the building is worth its own weight in gold.

Biggest key matchup for the Lions vs. Seahawks

Identifying the biggest key matchup for the Lions vs. Seahawks in Week 2 at Ford Field

Going into Week 1 for the Lions matchup with the Chiefs, I had said that Aidan Hutchinson against the Chiefs offensive tackles was the key matchup. Not much will be changing this week for the my biggest key matchup against the Seahawks.

Even though I’m going to be paying close attention to the usage of running back Jahmyr Gibbs and who plays left tackle for Taylor Decker, I’m still intrigued with the Lions defensive line. Most of this is due to the knee injury that occurred with defensive lineman Josh Paschal on Thursday. Not only will Paschal be out against the Seahawks, he could be out for a couple of weeks due to the injury.

That opens the door for players such as John Cominsky and Charles Harris to earn more snaps. However, both players had over 40% each of the defensive snaps last week against the Chiefs. For Cominsky, he played 27 defensive snaps (42%) and Harris played 52 defensive snaps (80%).

Despite Paschal playing the least amount of snaps with 17 defensive snaps (26%), I think the Lions can get creative and get James Houston on the field more. So with that, James Houston is my key player to watch for the Lions defense. Much of that is due to the versatility that the Lions defensive line has at all times.

The Lions should have no issues plugging Cominsky or Hutchinson inside to pass-rush as a 3-technique. That opens the door for Houston to standup off the edge and try to pressure Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith.

Houston potentially getting extended playing time is extremely relevant because of the injuries the Seahawks havre sustained with their offensive line. Not only did the team put their starting right tackle Abraham Lucas on the IR with a knee injury, they’ve also listed their starting left tackle Charles Cross out for the game.

This all bodes well for James Houston and the Lions defensive line. It should be expected for the Lions defense to pressure Smith early and often. With that, I’d expect an increase in playing time for Houston. While he didn’t record a defensive statistic last week against the Chiefs other than a quarterback hit on Patrick Mahomes, he should find success against Seattle.
