Seahawks re-sign CB Lance Boykin to reserve/future contract

Naturally, the team’s first official transaction since they made Mike Macdonald their new head coach involves a cornerback.

In Baltimore they love their defensive backs just as they have in Seattle these last 15 years or so. Naturally, the team’s first official transaction since they made Mike Macdonald their new head coach involves a cornerback. According to Aaron Wilson, Seattle has re-signed cornerback Lance Boykin to a reserve/future contract.

Players who sign these type deals typically end up on the practice squad the following season. That’s also where Boykin spent most of the 2023 campaign. In the end, he only made it on the field for one regular season game, putting in 10 total snaps against the Giants.

Looking ahead, there’s not much of a path for Boykin to get more playing time unless it’s on special teams. The Seahawks had an obscenity of riches at corner this year, even deep enough to waive Kyu Blu Kelly, who was a superb fifth-round pick by the Ravens out of Stanford. He’s now with the Commanders.

After the season ended, the team signed seven other players to reserve/future deals. That list includes edge Levi Bell, wide receivers Easop Winston Jr. and Cody White, running back Bryant Koback, safety Jonathan Sutherland, tight end Tyler Mabry and local nose tackle Matthew Gotel.

Seahawks 53-man roster tracker: Leonard Williams in, Cody Thompson out

Here’s the updated 53-man roster by jersey number going into tomorrow’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

The Seahawks are serious about making a deep postseason run this year. Just hours after their home win over the Browns, Seattle pulled off a trade that should help them get there. The front office has sent a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-rounder to the Giants in exchange for Leonard Williams, one of the top interior pass rushers in the league.

To make room for Wiliams, the Seahawks have waived wide receiver Cody Thompson. Our roster tracker is now updated (Oct. 31).

2 Seahawks cornerbacks, one wide receiver change jersey numbers

Here are all the latest jersey number changes going into camp.

The Seattle Seahawks kickoff training camp today with their first practice at the VMAC. On Monday we shared an updated 90-man roster by jersey number, but the team has made several changes since then, including a few players switching jersey numbers.

Here are all the latest jersey number changes going into camp, including cornerback Artie Burns abandoning Russell Wilson’s old No. 3. The team website shows him wearing No. 23, but team reporter John Boyle says he’s No. 29, formerly belonging to All-Pro free safety Earl Thomas. We’ll find out later today when the team takes the field.

  • CB Artie Burns – No. 3 to either No. 23 or No. 29
  • CB Lance Boykin – No. 19 to No. 18
  • WR John Hall – No. 18 to No. 82

Seattle also has several new players coming in that they signed yesterday, so expect more jersey news soon.

49ers 2023 prospect watch: CB Lance Boykin’s success may come down to versatility

The #49ers formally met with a CB at the combine who may be better served with a position change.

The 49ers have done a nice job under head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch of taking players in the draft (or in undrafted free agency) and putting them in positions to succeed, even if it means having them change positions. One intriguing prospect in this year’s draft who may benefit from landing with a team not afraid to move players to new positions is Coastal Carolina CB Lance Boykin. Boykin had a formal meeting with the 49ers at the combine per the Draft Network’s Justin Melo.

Boykin has terrific size for a defensive back at just over 6-2, 200 pounds. He also played in 46 college games between his tenures at Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina.

Despite lacking in overall athleticism (he clocked in with a 4.70 in the 40-yard dash), the ball production is undeniable. He intercepted five passes and broke up 22 during his college career thanks to his length and physicality. That lack of athleticism will likely catch up to him in the NFL though, which is where a position change could come in.

Boykin may be better served long-term as a strong safety where his  top-end speed is less of a concern. His tape has plenty of evidence that he’s willing to stick his nose in near the line of scrimmage against the run. Putting him in a position where he can hang out in the box, cover TEs or WRs in short areas, and step up to tackle in the run game may be just what he needs to carve out a real defensive role in the NFL.

Bengals met virtually with Coastal Carolina CB Lance Boykin

Another meeting of note for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals had another virtual meeting, this time with CB Lance Boykin from Coastal Carolina, according to Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

Boykin is 6’2”, 200 pounds, and uses his size to be physical in the secondary to try to mess with a receiver’s timing and projects better in man coverage.

Boykin had a career-high of 10 broken-up passes and two interceptions in his final season with the Chanticleers.

Eli Apple and Tre Flowers are still free agents, and even with the signing of Sidney Jones the Bengals have had their eyes on a lot of different cornerbacks before the draft.

The Bengals interest in attacking the secondary in the draft is very obvious at this point, and with only two weeks to go, it seems likely to be how they use one of their picks.
