Former Michigan State football players sign to NFL practice squads

Several former Spartans have signed with NFL teams to play on the practice squad

NFL cut day has come and gone, and NFL teams have cut their rosters from 80 to 53, meaning many players were let go by there respective teams. The next step for these players is to hopefully catch on and get signed to a team’s practice squad.

Several former Spartans were a part of the NFL caualties, but some were lucky enough to catch on and sign with NFLpractice squads.

2 Steelers elevated to 53-man roster for showdown with Packers

In light of the Chase Claypool injury, 2 offensive players have been elevated from the practice squad.

With a hamstring injury holding Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool out of their contest with the Green Bay Packers, Cody White has been elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

And the already shaky offensive line unit is also dealing with injuries to tackle Chuks Okorafor and reserve tackle Rashaad Coward. Offensive lineman Chaz Green has been elevated for depth behind presumed starting tackle Joe Haeg.

This weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers promoted former Spartan wide receiver Cody White from their practice squad to their active roster. On Sunday, that move led to White recording his first career catch in the NFL, and his second.

White had two catches for 17 yards in a loss for the Steelers, but that should hopefully be the start of more good things from White at the next level as he did look good in the playing time he was given.

Pittsburgh Steelers retain Justin Layne, cut Cody White

Bittersweet for Spartan fans:

Pittsburgh Steelers waive Cody White, but Justin Layne makes the team

As final roster cuts were made on Tuesday, there are mixed emotions coming out of Pittsburgh for Spartan fans. Defensive back Justin Layne survived judgement day, but wide receiver Cody White was waived by the team.

Cody White had a very good training camp, so getting cut was somewhat of a surprise. The Steelers may have lost their chance at keeping him as well, as another team may claim him off of waivers, after a strong preseason performance.

Justin Layne has been underwhelming so far in his time in Pittsburgh, but is getting another chance to solidify a spot on the roster.

Former Michigan State football WR Cody White impresses in Steelers preseason game

Cody White had a solid preseason game against the Eagles

Former Michigan State wide receiver Cody White went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. He had a brief stint with the Denver Broncos before getting a more stable reserve role with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Now, heading into his second year in the league, White is looking to push his way up depth charts. Strong preseason performances is the best chance for White to earn a spot in the lineup, and he did just that Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

White finished with a solid stat line, catching 5 of his 6 targets for 39 yards.

Another former MSU Football standout has found a home at the next level.

On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they have signed former Spartan wide receiver Cody White to their practice squad.

White has bounced around some teams but hopefully this spot sticks. The Steelers brought him in for a workout on Tuesday and must have liked what they saw. While White doesn’t have elite speed, he does have a big frame at 6-foot-3 and I think fits the mold of a solid journeyman wide receiver.

White was initially signed by the Kansas City Chiefs after going undrafted before being waived in late July. He then went from the New York Giants to the Denver Broncos before ending up with the Steelers.

As a player who came out of school after his junior season, I believe that White was heavily impacted by the pandemic, which limited opportunities to go workout for teams around the country, but now that he’s found a home hopefully he gets a solid chance to stick with Pittsburgh for the long term, with fellow Spartan Justin Layne.
