Jared Jones named SEC Freshman of the Week

Last weekend against Samford, it was Jones’ world, and we were all just living in it.

Last weekend against Samford, it was [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag]’ world, and we were all just living in it.

Jones finished the series going 6-for-10 with four homers, 11 RBI and 5 runs. Those stats earned him SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

Jones is off to a hot start in his first season on the bayou. He currently holds a .356 batting average with 4 doubles, 6 homers, and 21 RBI.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] is still trying to figure out how all of the puzzle pieces will fit into the lineup card every day, and Jones may be a Freshman, but he is making a case for being the starting first baseman for a majority of games this season.

Between Jones and [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag], LSU is in a good place at first base. We are still waiting on [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] to be back at third base to complete the infield, but so far so good. [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] have done well in his absence, though.

In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on a passed ball and [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] double play to increase the Tigers lead to 4-1 after five innings.

[autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] came in to pitch in the top of the sixth inning and gave up a run before [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] closed the inning out to keep the 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the offense came to life. Tommy Tanks hit a GRAND SLAM to score Dugas, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag], and Crews and make it an 8-1 game. [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] followed that with a single to score [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] hit an RBI double to score Jones, and Kling decided to call ‘ball game’ when he hit a three-run homer to enforce the run rule as LSU won 13-1.

Jared ‘Bear’ Jones is on another level right now. Before striking out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Jones hit four homers in four straight at-bats.

[autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] is on another level right now. Before striking out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Jones hit four homers in four straight at-bats in LSU’s 12-0 win over Samford in seven innings.

The Tigers picked up where they left off last night against Samford in the bottom of the first inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] both hit a homer to put them up 5-0 after one inning.

That homer was the last run scored by either team tonight. [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] came in to pitch the sixth and seventh innings for LSU as the Tigers run-ruled Samford once again.

As announced earlier, LSU will play the final game of the series against the Bulldogs on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.

Another spectacular start for Paul Skenes leads LSU past Samford in Game 1

Skenes moved to 4-0 this season after a big win over the Samford Bulldogs on Friday night.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] moved to 4-0 this season after a big 11-1 run-rule win over the Samford Bulldogs on Friday night.

Skenes finished the game with six innings pitched allowing 2 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk. He had double-digit strikeouts once again as he finished the game with 12.

LSU started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored after a couple of walks and a throwing error. The score remained 1-0 LSU until the top of the third inning when Samford scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The Tigers got that run back in the bottom of the third as [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] sacrifice fly to give LSU a 2-1 lead.

LSU scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning when [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the fifth inning, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run bomb to run the lead up to 5-1 LSU.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU decided they were ready to call it a night. The Tigers scored six runs to enforce the run rule. [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score Kling, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score Crews and Morgan, White scored on a throwing error, and Bear Jones hit a walk-off two-run homer to give LSU an 11-1 victory.

With the win, LSU moves to 13-1 on the season. The Tigers will take on Samford again Satu night at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Gavin Dugas’ 9th-inning bomb lifts LSU past Texas in pitcher’s duel

Dugas broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the ninth as the Tigers survived a tough one in Austin.

LSU traveled to Austin, Texas, as champions of the Round Rock Classic and still holding the No. 1 ranking in the country. To escape with that ranking, it took all the Tigers had as a three-run bomb from [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the ninth as LSU ultimately took a 3-0 win.

[autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] got his second start of the season trying to improve after struggling with his location in his first game. He showed some improvement as he went 4.2 innings against Texas, allowing zero runs on three hits, four strikeouts, and three walks. He is still working on his command, but not giving up any runs is a great start.

Through five complete innings, the score remained 0-0 as each team had three hits, but they couldn’t get any runs out of them. The Longhorns starting pitcher, Lebarron Johnson Jr. mowed through the LSU lineup as he pitched five innings allowing three hits on two walks and nine strikeouts.

Charlie Hurley came in to pitch for the Longhorns to start the sixth inning, but after walking [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] reached on a throwing error. David Pierce had seen enough. He made a call to the bullpen for David Shaw.

Shaw had a balk as soon as he came into the game but then struck out [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] to keep LSU scoreless. [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] remained in the game to pitch for LSU heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, Neal and Thompson walked to start the Tigers off with a runner in scoring position and no outs. [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] followed that with a strikeout for LSU’s first out. The Longhorns then brought in Andre Duplanter II to face Dugas.

Dugas, the man who embodies everything it means to be an LSU Tiger, had two runners on base with one out as he did what he does best. Dugas hit a three-run bomb to left field to put the Tigers on top 3-0 in the top of the ninth inning.

[autotag]Christian Little[/autotag], the transfer from Vanderbilt, was tasked with closing out the win for LSU. Little got Guillemette to foul out to Nippolt for out number one, He got O’Dowd to fly out to Jobert for out number two, and he got Powell to ground out to secure the 3-0 victory for the Tigers.

With the win, LSU moves to 7-1 on the season. The Tigers will be back in action this Friday as it welcomes Butler into Alex Box Stadium. The first pitch for that game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball bounces back with a win against Sam Houston State

It was bombs away against Sam Houston State as LSU used the long ball to close out the weekend in Texas with a win.

After LSU lost its first game of the season on Saturday against Iowa, many wondered how the No. 1 Tigers would react to the stunning loss as they finished the Round Rock Classic on Sunday.

It was bombs away against Sam Houston State as LSU used the long ball to bounce back for a win to finish the Classic’s finale. The Tigers answered any questions about the validity of their No. 1 overall ranking with a drubbing of the Bearkats, 16-4.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] got it started early as he hit a two-run homer in the first inning to get LSU started off right. In the second inning, LSU scored five runs thanks to a [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] RBI single, a 2-RBI double for [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], and another two-run blast by Jobert to make it 7-0 after two innings.

In the top of the third inning, LSU scored three more runs as [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a solo shot down the left field line and Crews hit a 2-RBI single to make the score 10-0 after three innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Thompson hit an RBI single that scored two runs thanks to an error to make it 12-0 Tigers. In the bottom of the inning, the Bearkats finally got on the board as they scored three runs on [autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] to put the 10-run lead in jeopardy.

In the top of the fifth, Jobert hit an RBI single to score Crews and give the Tigers a chance at ending the weekend with a double-digit victory. [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] single in the top of the sixth to increase the lead to 14-3.

In the top of the seventh inning, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI single up the middle to score Crews and increase the Tiger lead to 15-3. In the bottom of the inning, the Bearkats hit a solo homer off of [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] to trim the lead to 15-4, but that is all they could manage.

In the top of the ninth inning, LSU scored another run thanks to a groundout by Morgan that scored [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag].

With the win, LSU moves to 6-1 on the year. Its next game is Tuesday evening when it travels to Austin, Texas, to take on the Texas Longhorns.

LSU starts off strong with win over Kansas State in the Round Rock Classic

The Tigers continued their perfect start to the season in their opener in Texas on Friday.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] got his second start of the young season, and we saw the valiant return of [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] as LSU beat Kansas State 7-3 in the first game of the 2023 Round Rock Classic.

The Wildcats started off hot against Skenes as they got runners on second and third with only one out thanks to a leadoff single, a walk, and a flyout to advance the runners. Kansas State then scored on an RBI single to put runners on the corners with one out. The next two batters struck out and Skenes escaped only down 1-0.

The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the second inning as [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and advance [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to second. That tied the score at 1-1 after two innings.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch and White advanced to third. Morgan then reached on a fielder’s choice that scored White to make it 3-1 LSU after six innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game with a solo homer off of [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, LSU got that run back and more as the Tigers plated four runs to increase their lead to 7-2. [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews hit an RBI single that scored [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag], and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score Crews and Dugas.

Floyd stayed in to pitch the top of the ninth inning to close out the win over the Wildcats. Kansas State was able to score an unearned run to make the final 7-3. With the win, LSU improves to 5-0 on the year. The Tigers will play the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday at noon CT in Game 2 of the Classic.

Thatcher Hurd struggles but Tre Morgan hits for the cycle in run-rule win over Southern

The Tigers overcame an early 4-0 deficit with 18 consecutive runs.

Despite falling behind early in the game, the Tigers managed to bounce back in a big way against Southern on Tuesday night thanks to a monster game from Tre Morgan. He hit for the cycle in order and totaled eight RBI in an 18-4 win as the game ended after seven innings thanks to the run rule.

UCLA transfer [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] got his first start on the mound in an LSU uniform, and it did not go as planned. Going into the season, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said that Hurd had some work to do because he was struggling with accuracy. That showed big time against the Southern Jaguars.

Hurd only lasted two full innings before being pulled after giving up four runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. That rough start had the Tigers down 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. That’s when the LSU bats showed up big time.

After [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] was walked, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double to right field to score Crews and cut the lead to 4-1.

Morgan then hit Dugas with the “Anything you can, do I can do better,” as he hit a two-RBI double to left field to cut the lead to 4-3. Then, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run shot to left to give the Tigers their first lead of the ball game.

[autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] came in to pitch for Hurd in the third inning and he continued on the mound until the middle of the 6th inning. Little was given the job of stopping the early bleeding and he did his job very well.

He finished the game going 3.2 innings, and he only allowed one hit with six strikeouts and one walk.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, after [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and Crews walked, Jobert finally got a good swing on a pitch as he hit a three-run shot to left field to make it 8-4 Tigers after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU put up five more runs as [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch, Morgan hit a three-RBI triple to left field to score Dugas, Jobert and Crews, and Jones hit an RBI single up the middle to score Morgan to make it 13-4 after five innings.

Freshman [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] made his first appearance of the season as he came in to get the final out of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Thompson scored on a groundout by [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag]. [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] followed that with an RBI single to left field to score Stevenson and make it 15-4 before Morgan hit a three-run bomb to make it 18-4.

With that homer, Morgan completed the cycle. He hit a single, double, triple, and a homer in that order. Morgan’s cycle was the first cycle for LSU since Mikie Mahtook in 2010 against Alcorn State.

Morgan finished the game 4-for-5 with eight RBI.

Herring stayed in to pitch the seventh inning as he tried to end the game in a run rule. The first batter he faced roped a double to the left field line and he was removed from the mound after that as [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in to pitch for the Tigers. Edwards got three outs in a row without allowing a run to close things out.

LSU will be back in action this weekend in the Round Rock Classic as the Tigers take on Kansas State on Friday at 2 p.m. CT.

Six Tigers make Perfect Game’s Top 100 Freshmen List

Brady Neal, Chase Shores, Gavin Guidry, Jaden Noot, Jared Jones and Paxton Kling were all honored by Perfect Game heading into the season.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has signed back-to-back No. 1 recruiting classes as he enters his second season as the skipper on the Bayou. Six current freshmen were recently named to Perfect Game’s Top 100 Freshman list.

A few were selected in the MLB draft but have decided to forgo that selection to go to LSU and try to bring a national championship to the best baseball fans in the country. [autotag]Jaden Noot[/autotag], [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag], [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag], [autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag] and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] were all named to the Top 100 list.

Two right-handed pitchers, two catchers, an outfielder, and an infielder. All of whom were ranked very highly in their respective position. The 2023 season starts Feb. 17 against Western Michigan.

Here’s a rundown of each player who made the list.

LSU baseball has the No. 1 recruiting class for the second year in a row

Jay Johnson continues to stockpile talent in Baton Rouge.

For the second year in a row, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers have signed the No. 1 recruiting class. Although the Tigers lost a few of their commitments to the 2022 MLB Draft, there is still a very talented group of freshmen that will be on the field for LSU this spring.

LSU boasts six recruits that are listed by Baseball America as top 500 draft prospects. [autotag]Jaden Noot[/autotag] (No. 71), [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] (No. 83), [autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag] (No. 93), [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] (No. 215), [autotag]Aiden Moffett[/autotag] (No. 495) and [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] (No. 499).

Last season, LSU went 40-22 overall and 17-13 in conference play. Their season ended with a loss to Southern Miss in the Hattiesburg Regional.

LSU lost a lot of talented guys from that team last year (to the MLB Draft and the transfer portal) but with this type of recruiting class, it will be a fun Spring at the Box.
