LSU remains unanimous No. 1 team in baseball despite loss

Even with the loss to Iowa, LSU remains the No. 1 team in the country according to every poll.

Despite their 12-4 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, LSU won the [autotag]Round Rock Classic[/autotag], and it was able to maintain its spot as the No. 1 team in the country according to every poll.

The SEC is very well represented in the top ten as well with as many as six teams ranked in the top ten by some polls and five in others. The Tigers are getting ready to travel to Austin, Texas, for a mid-week matchup against the unranked Texas Longhorns.

LSU was led last week by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], who was named the SEC player of the week, and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] who had two incredible starts.

Here’s where the Tigers stand in each poll.

LSU baseball bounces back with a win against Sam Houston State

It was bombs away against Sam Houston State as LSU used the long ball to close out the weekend in Texas with a win.

After LSU lost its first game of the season on Saturday against Iowa, many wondered how the No. 1 Tigers would react to the stunning loss as they finished the Round Rock Classic on Sunday.

It was bombs away against Sam Houston State as LSU used the long ball to bounce back for a win to finish the Classic’s finale. The Tigers answered any questions about the validity of their No. 1 overall ranking with a drubbing of the Bearkats, 16-4.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] got it started early as he hit a two-run homer in the first inning to get LSU started off right. In the second inning, LSU scored five runs thanks to a [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] RBI single, a 2-RBI double for [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], and another two-run blast by Jobert to make it 7-0 after two innings.

In the top of the third inning, LSU scored three more runs as [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a solo shot down the left field line and Crews hit a 2-RBI single to make the score 10-0 after three innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Thompson hit an RBI single that scored two runs thanks to an error to make it 12-0 Tigers. In the bottom of the inning, the Bearkats finally got on the board as they scored three runs on [autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] to put the 10-run lead in jeopardy.

In the top of the fifth, Jobert hit an RBI single to score Crews and give the Tigers a chance at ending the weekend with a double-digit victory. [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] single in the top of the sixth to increase the lead to 14-3.

In the top of the seventh inning, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI single up the middle to score Crews and increase the Tiger lead to 15-3. In the bottom of the inning, the Bearkats hit a solo homer off of [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] to trim the lead to 15-4, but that is all they could manage.

In the top of the ninth inning, LSU scored another run thanks to a groundout by Morgan that scored [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag].

With the win, LSU moves to 6-1 on the year. Its next game is Tuesday evening when it travels to Austin, Texas, to take on the Texas Longhorns.

LSU baseball suffers first loss of the season against Iowa

The No. 1 LSU Tigers lost their first game of the year in a blowout loss to Iowa.

The No. 1 team in America according to every poll, the LSU Tigers, suffered their first loss of the year on Saturday against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the [autotag]Round Rock Classic[/autotag].

Friday night, the Hawkeyes lost to Sam Houston State 6-0, so they came into Saturday’s game extra motivated. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers today and Iowa got to him early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Hawkeyes plated two more runs on Cooper before they chased him from the mound and [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got to be the victim of their punishment.

Cooper’s final stat line was three innings pitched while giving up 7 hits and 5 runs with five strikeouts and one walk. Dutton was pulled after he pitched one inning and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits. Just like that it was 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

LSU finally scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single after the Tigers loaded the bases on walks. LSU cut the lead to 7-2 and it looked like they might claw back into the game, but Iowa had other plans.

In the top of the eighth inning, Iowa scored 4 runs after an RBI single and a three-run homer to make the score 11-2. The game felt out of hand at that point, but LSU would not give up. Another RBI single from Crews scored [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] and a [autotag]Brady Jones[/autotag] sacrifice fly scored [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] to cut the lead to 11-4 after eight innings.

In the top of the ninth, Iowa scored their final run of the game with a solo homer to right field to make it 12-4 Hawkeyes. The Tigers were retired in order in the bottom of the inning.

With the loss, LSU drops to 5-1 on the season. They will finish the Round Rock Classic on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Sam Houston State.

LOOK: LSU’s game vs. Kansas State ended with a hitting clock expiring, and baseball fans weren’t thrilled about it

Not everyone is a fan of the new baseball clock rules.

LSU impressed on Friday afternoon in its opening contest at the Round Rock Classic in Texas, overcoming an early deficit to earn a comfortable 7-3 win.

Though the result wasn’t really in question, the game ended in a somewhat controversial fashion. With one on and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, the Wildcats lost the game after the umpire called strike three when the hitting clock expired.

As part of the new rule changes to speed up the game this season, batters have a 30-second timer to get ready. That timer expired, and it allowed LSU to walk it off with a clock violation.

Needless to say, many fans and baseball purists — including some who root for LSU — weren’t thrilled to see the new rule play such an impactful role (though the Tigers had a good chance to win, regardless.

LSU starts off strong with win over Kansas State in the Round Rock Classic

The Tigers continued their perfect start to the season in their opener in Texas on Friday.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] got his second start of the young season, and we saw the valiant return of [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] as LSU beat Kansas State 7-3 in the first game of the 2023 Round Rock Classic.

The Wildcats started off hot against Skenes as they got runners on second and third with only one out thanks to a leadoff single, a walk, and a flyout to advance the runners. Kansas State then scored on an RBI single to put runners on the corners with one out. The next two batters struck out and Skenes escaped only down 1-0.

The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the second inning as [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and advance [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to second. That tied the score at 1-1 after two innings.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch and White advanced to third. Morgan then reached on a fielder’s choice that scored White to make it 3-1 LSU after six innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game with a solo homer off of [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, LSU got that run back and more as the Tigers plated four runs to increase their lead to 7-2. [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews hit an RBI single that scored [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag], and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score Crews and Dugas.

Floyd stayed in to pitch the top of the ninth inning to close out the win over the Wildcats. Kansas State was able to score an unearned run to make the final 7-3. With the win, LSU improves to 5-0 on the year. The Tigers will play the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday at noon CT in Game 2 of the Classic.

How to watch, stream, preview for No. 1 LSU baseball at the Round Rock Classic this weekend

Here’s what you need to know to follow the Tigers in Texas this weekend.

After a 4-0 start to the season with a sweep over Western Michigan last weekend and a run-rule win over Southern on Tuesday night, the Tigers are back on the field this weekend at the Round Rock Classic in Texas, where they’ll face Kansas State, Iowa and Sam Houston State.

Kansas State is coming off a weekend sweep against Stephen F. Austin, though it lost a midweek matchup to Lamar. Iowa enters at 3-0, while Sam Houston State is 3-2 with losses to Rhode Island and Rice.

“This trip will be important for our team,” coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said in a release. “There are a lot of things that are great about it, and we’re going to play some great opponents. We’ll be challenged, we’ll be tested, but I’m really excited to get out to Round Rock. It’s a beautiful ballpark; it’s a great venue, and I think this experience will be very beneficial for our team in a lot of ways.”

The Tigers will hope that [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] is able to make his return this weekend. The third baseman suffered a shoulder injury in the season-opener and hasn’t appeared since.

Here’s everything you need to know to follow this weekend’s series.

LSU baseball will play in the 2023 Round Rock Classic

The Tigers join Iowa, Kansas State and Sam Houston State in the field.

The fourth annual Round Rock Classic is happening from February 24-26 and the Tigers are a part of the competition. LSU joins Iowa, Kansas State and Sam Houston State in the classic.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the Tigers are coming off of a 40-22 season (17-13 in conference play) with a loss to Southern Miss in the Hattiesburg Regional final. LSU lost a good bit of players from last season to the MLB draft and to the transfer portal, but the Tigers offset that as they signed the No. 1 transfer recruiting class and the No. 1 high school recruiting class.

As Johnson starts his second year in Baton Rouge, the expectations of winning will remain very high as he attempts to bring another national championship to Alex Box Stadium. The Kansas State Wildcats finished last season 29-29, Iowa finished 36-19 and Sam Houston State finished 31-25 last spring.

Oklahoma makes it a winning week beating Baylor 9-3 in Round Rock

Oklahoma finished the week off with a win over Baylor 9-3 to conclude their weekend at the Round Rock Classic.

Oklahoma’s start to the 2021 season has been very hot and cold, with some really good nights and some not so good nights in the early going. Sunday night was one of the good ones as the Sooners cruised by Baylor 9-3 in what will go in the books as a non-conference matchup between the two Big 12 programs.

Oklahoma was finishing up the weekend at the Round Rock Classic hoping to make it a winning week after splitting their two games at Globe Life Field and splitting the first two games of the weekend against Auburn and Texas A&M. They were successful behind a strong offensive output and a good start from left-hander Jake Bennett.

The Sooners didn’t waste any time getting on the board scoring two runs in the top of the first on RBI hits by left fielder Diego Muniz and third baseman Brett Squires. The Bears would respond, however, with two unearned runs of their own in the bottom half off of Bennett.

But, Bennett would mostly settle in from there getting through the next four innings unscathed to finish his evening with five innings pitched and just the two runs that won’t be charged against his ERA. He was helped by the ability to settle in a bit with a lead after Oklahoma put up four runs in the top of the third on four RBI singles by Squires, right fielder Kendall Pettis, designated hitter Jimmy Crooks and shortstop Brandon Zaragoza.

Squires would tack on his third run-scoring hit two innings later to push the lead out some more with Oklahoma then getting a couple more runners around in the seventh to extend the lead out to 9-2. Baylor would score one more run in the bottom half of the seventh, again unearned, but it would be too little far too late with the deficit so wide.

The Sooners’ bullpen was tremendous on the day, with Carson Carter tossing three innings allowing just the one unearned run and two hits while striking out four. Jason Ruffcorn then finished the job in the ninth without allowing a run and only giving up one hit.

A really strong finish to the week to get back above .500, this win should provide some more confidence to an Oklahoma team just looking to find some consistency in the early part of the season. The offense having another big day to validate Friday’s game after Saturday’s slumber is very nice to see for Skip Johnson’s club as well.

The Sooners will now get a few days off before starting a four-game stretch in Frisco as part of the Frisco College Baseball Classic on Thursday.

Oklahoma loses big to Texas A&M 8-1 in Round Rock

Oklahoma baseball fell to Texas A&M on Saturday night in Round Rock, Texas 8-1 behind a huge first inning offensively for the Aggies.

The up and down 2021 season for Oklahoma continued on Saturday night as the Sooners followed up their big walk-off win over Auburn with a blowout 8-1 loss at the hands of Texas A&M.

The Aggies didn’t waste much time in putting this game to bed, for after a scoreless top of the first for Oklahoma, Texas A&M responded by hanging seven runs on the board in the bottom half off of Sooners starting pitcher Dalton Fowler.

It would be the only inning Fowler threw, with all seven runs being earned on four allowed hits and four walks. Simply put, it was a disastrous outing for the redshirt sophomore that he will have to put far from his mind before likely starting again next weekend in Frisco.

The Aggies would pick up another run in the fourth inning off of right-handed pitcher Ben Abram to move the lead to 8-0. The lone Oklahoma run of the day would come in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice by right fielder Breydon Daniel to drive in second baseman Conor McKenna.

There aren’t a whole lot of positive things to draw from this game for the Sooners, with the offense being pretty much extinguished all night long and the game feeling largely over after the first inning. For what it’s worth, the bullpen did do a good job keeping Texas A&M at bay the rest of the evening after the big start – it was just far too late after they put up seven in the first frame.

Despite this tough outing, a win tomorrow would still make this a mostly successful week with some good wins under their belt. Finishing the weekend with a win on Sunday will heavily alter how the team is perceived going into next week.

Now at 3-3 on the season, Oklahoma will finish up the Round Rock Classic tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. CT with a non-conference contest against Baylor.

Walk it off: Oklahoma outlasts Auburn 4-3 in 10 innings

Oklahoma rallied late to force extra innings and then walked it off against the Auburn Tigers on Friday in Round Rock.

Oklahoma baseball entered the Round Rock Classic this weekend playing mostly uneven baseball after splitting the first four games of the young season. Although, their best outing of the year came in the last game they played with Wednesday’s 7-1 defeat of UT-Arlington.

On Friday, while it didn’t always look great, they managed to keep the good times rolling with a stunning come-from-behind win over No. 21/22 Auburn in 10 innings to move above .500 at 3-2. The loss is the Tigers’ first of the year.

The Sooners turned to their best starter in Wyatt Olds to try and slow down an Auburn offense that hung 33 runs on the board in their last game earlier this week. Unfortunately for Skip Johnson and company, he wasn’t at his best. He was only able to go three innings allowing three runs on seven hits and leaving the game with Oklahoma trailing 3-0.

It was at this point that we insert one of the stars of the game in relief pitcher Jaret Godman into the equation. Godman picked up his teammate, and then some, tossing an astonishing six shutout frames out of the bullpen allowing just four hits. Unequivocally he kept them in it and gave them the chance to win it late.

First baseman Tyler Hardman picked up a run-scoring single in the fifth to get the Sooners on the board, but that was it until the eighth inning. Leftfielder Diego Muniz would get an RBI single at that point to make it a 3-2 lead going into the ninth.

There, Hardman would come through yet again with a sacrifice fly with runners on the corners and one out to even things up at 3-3. Oklahoma would load the bases with two outs, but Kendall Pettis struck out and left the runners stranded.

In the tenth, closer Jason Ruffcorn came in and absolutely dominated, putting the side down in order with two strikeouts. The Sooners would then load the bases up with two outs again, but this time Hardman would be the man at the plate and he would yet again come through with the walk-off single to complete the rally for the win.

This is an absolutely superb win for Oklahoma to get back in the win column against a really good Auburn team. The confidence that could be drawn from this will be huge and it will be very interesting to see if this is the spark of a really nice stretch for the Sooners against quality competition over the next couple of weekends.

They’ll run things back at Dell Diamond tomorrow against Texas A&M at 6:00 p.m. CT.
