Buffalo Bills were expected to lose some pieces in their secondary this offseason. That hadn’t really happened… until now.
The Las Vegas Raiders have signed former Bills safety to a one-year deal. The team announced the transaction on Monday.
Johnson, 27, was selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft by Buffalo. Johnson was in a tough spot during his entire Bills career.
Through its entirety, the team had one of the top-safety duos in the NFL during his time in western New York via Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.
Because of that, Johnson never really had a path to a larger role with the Bills, which led to him only starting four games in his career.. But he did manage two interceptions with the team.
Johnson’s largest contributions to the Bills came on special teams. He played in more than 60 percent of Buffalo’s special teams snaps over the past three seasons.
Earlier this offseason, it was expected that the Bills would lose Poyer during free agency. He ended up re-signing with the team, as did Cam Lewis and Dane Jackson, who were restricted free agents.
All considered, Buffalo’s secondary won’t have much turnover.
But with Johnson’s departure and the uncertain future surrounding Damar Hamlin, a long-term safety project pick could be on the docket for the Bills at the upcoming draft.
