Jalen Reeves-Maybin wins a rare honor for a Lions player

Reeves-Maybin became the first Lions non-specialist to win the Special Teams Player of the Week in almost 20 years

In a very deserving nod for a great game, Detroit LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 13. Reeves-Maybin had an outstanding effort on the punt and kick units in the Lions’ 33-28 win in New Orleans over the Saints.

The linebacker, who also played well in an expanded role on defense, recorded four tackles on special teams. That ties for the most by any player in a single game in 2023. Reeves-Maybin is the first non-specialist to win the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week this year.

In the process of winning the weekly honor, Reeves-Maybin becomes the first non-specialist to win the award in a Lions uniform in nearly 20 years. Safety Bracy Walker was the last Detroit player to win Special Teams Player of the Week without kicking or returning the ball, a feat he accomplished in Week 1 of the 2004 season.

Snap count notes from the Lions win over the Saints

Snap count notes from the Lions win over the Saints reflect a shift on defense with Anzalone out

There were quite a few notable takeaways from the player participation report for the Detroit Lions in the team’s Week 13 win in New Orleans. The first that stands out is the relative lack of plays.

The Lions ran just 58 offensive plays in the game, which is low overall but especially low for a winning team that scored 33 points. The quick-strike scores off defensive takeaways really aided Detroit there. New Orleans ran 67 plays, leaving the game with just 125 offensive snaps. Detroit’s Week 12 game had 140, by contrast.

Defensively, the starting secondary of Jerry Jacobs and Cam Sutton at CB and safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph all played the entire game. Third safety Tracy Walker joined them for 45 snaps, meaning the Lions were in base 4-2-5 for 69 percent of the snaps. Will Harris played three snaps, all in the goal line package, and Ifeatu Melifonwu got this customary one defensive snap.

The linebackers who constituted the “2” in the base defense and also expanded to three for the other 19 plays varied with captain Alex Anzalone out. When the Lions stuck with two backers, it was almost exclusively Derrick Barnes (56 snaps) and Jack Campbell (53). Malcolm Rodriguez saw almost double the defensive snaps in New Orleans (31) than he had in the last seven games combined (16). Vet Jalen Reeves-Maybin played a season-high 20 on defense and looked capable in those reps, too.

Aidan Hutchinson once again barely left the field. The DE played 61 of the 69 snaps. Josh Paschal repped 43 in what looked like his best game of the season. Bruce Irvin saw 11 snaps in his Detroit debut. Romeo Okwara bagged a sack amongst his nine snaps, while Charles Harris played just three.

On offense, the biggest takeaway was Amon-Ra St. Brown only playing 79 percent of the snaps. Normally he does not leave the field and he did not have any notable injuries. Josh Reynolds nearly out-snapped him with 44 to St. Brown’s 46. Jameson Williams played 33, followed by Kalif Raymond (13) and Donovan Peoples-Jones (12).

At RB, David Montgomery was the lead back with 36, 10 more than Jahmyr Gibbs. The two were on the field together for three plays. Craig Reynolds saw just two snaps as the third back.

Blocking-wise, Dan Skipper played five reps as an extra tackle, two more than third TE James Mitchell played. After center Frank Ragnow left (21 snaps), Colby Sorsdal went the rest of the way at RG while Graham Glasgow kicked inside to replace Ragnow in the pivot.

Lions practice notebook for August 22: Defense dominates the day

Detroit Lions practice notebook from Tuesday, August 22nd, a full-contact session dominated by the defense

The first day of Detroit Lions training camp in several weeks with no fans in the stands made for a quieter experience. Aaron Glenn’s defense did its best to make a lot of noise at the Tuesday afternoon practice.

On an overcast day with the team in full pads and live tackling, Detroit’s defensive dominance was the story.

Here’s some of what stood out from the August 22nd practice in Allen Park.

Kelvin Sheppard should earn gold star in Lions LB room resurgence

Detroit Lions LB coach Kelvin Sheppard should earn a gold star with his excellent coaching and mentorship that has turned around the LB room

The Detroit Lions linebacker room has had a rough history. Fans remembering the days of Jarrad Davis, Jahlani Tavai, and Christian Jones causes some anxiety. Probably the last time the Lions had a solid linebacker corps was with DeAndre Levy and Stephen Tulloch.

However, General Manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have worked hard to bring in talented players to improve the linebacker room through free agency and the draft. “Dan’s Guys,” such as Alex Anzalone, have been signed to bridge the gap between young players and coaches, while players like Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Jack Campbell have been drafted to fit the culture and defensive scheme. With the guidance of Kelvin Sheppard, who has experience playing linebacker, the Lions have been able to turn these players into a cohesive unit to strengthen the defense.

In their first preseason game against the New York Giants, the Lions linebackers performed impressively. Barnes played with the green dot and performed as expected, while Campbell was the top-graded Lions defender by PFF, and the highest-graded rookie of the week. He showcased his toughness, awareness, and athleticism, leaving opposing offenses nervous.

Reeves-Maybin and Rodriguez also demonstrated the depth of the Lions’ linebacker room. Reeves-Maybin led the Lions in tackles, and Rodriguez provided the power that fans loved from last season. Although Anthony Pittman and Trevor Nowaske showed potential, their special team abilities were more important at this point in the depth chart.

The Lions linebackers had three of the top six PFF-graded defensive players: Campbell, Barnes, and Reeves-Maybin. The middle of the field has been shored up with these players, and Sheppard has coached them up to a standard of excellence. Coach Campbell has recognized Sheppard’s promising work and believes that he is destined for coordinator, and maybe even head coach, someday.

The trust he has earned from everyone in the Lions organization is a testament to the excellent work he has done with the players in his room. With the linebackers’ impressive performance so far this preseason, there is no doubt that Sheppard deserves recognition amongst the Lions faithful.

The game started off slowly, with the offense struggling, but the defense saved the day by repeatedly stepping up to the challenge and shutting down their opponents. Although some areas showed promise, others may require further evaluation by the Lions’ management.

Here are the standout performances from this week’s best and worst Pro Footbal Focus (PFF) performers, highlighting those who impressed and those who fell short in their bid for a coveted roster spot.

Stud and Duds for the Lions’ preseason win against the Giants

Here is the breakdown of Detroit Lions Studs and Duds for their preseason victory over the New York Giants

The Detroit Lions kicked off their football season with a 21-16 preseason win over the New York Giants.

Despite the Giants’ favorable starting field position, it was evident early on that the Lions defense had made significant progress during the offseason. They displayed impressive run defense, quarterback pressure and tight coverage. It’s still early in the season to make any judgments, but it’s reassuring to see the team’s improvement paying off.

As you reflect on the game, keep an eye out for standout players vying for roster spots, as well as those who fell short and may not make the cut. The following are the Lions’ Studs and Duds for this week.

Lions reveal free agent jersey numbers and veteran number changes

A bunch of Lions players changed their numbers now that different jerseys were available

When the Detroit Lions take to the field for the first mandatory minicamp in a few weeks, we’ll get a chance to see the free agents signed this offseason in their new jerseys for the first time. Now we know which number each of the new Lions will be sporting in 2023, at least to start the offseason.

The Lions revealed the jersey number choices of the free agent class of 2023. It was included in the same social media postings as the rookie jersey number assignments.

For the first time in the modern era, a Lions player will don No. 0. That honor goes to veteran wideout Marvin Jones, who returned in free agency after two seasons in Jacksonville.

The liberation of number assignments allows several new defensive backs to rock single-digit jerseys. Cam Sutton will wear No. 1, with C.J. Gardner-Johnson going for No. 2 and Emmanuel Moseley choosing the No 4 jersey. Running back David Montgomery will go with No. 5.

In addition to the new free agents, several holdover Lions pulled off some jersey number changes, too. Most notable among these are DB Ifeatu Melifonwu moving to No. 6 from 26 and running back Craig Reynolds choosing No. 13 after being No. 46.

That 24 belongs to cornerback Jarren Williams, not to be confused with wideout Jameson Williams, who appears to be keeping his No. 9.
