Bills’ Isaiah Hodgins ‘had a feeling’ deep ball was coming his way vs. Colts

#Bills’ Isaiah Hodgins ‘had a feeling’ deep ball was coming his way vs. #Colts:

Bills receiver Isaiah Hodgins made an impact against the Colts in his team’s 27-24 preseason win.

It was a last-second kick by Tyler Bass that made the difference on the scoreboard. However, Hodgins played a big part in getting the Bills there.

Hodgins had 77 yards receiving in the outing, trailing only teammate Khalil Shakir (92). Of those yards, 27 came on a deep ball from quarterback Matt Barkley which got the Bills down to the goal line.

The over-the-shoulder grab was awfully impressive.

“I knew it was a deep route and it was press coverage,” Hodgins said following the win. “Me and Matt (Barkley) and Case (Keenum), we’ve been throwing balls like that all camp. I kind of had a feeling he was coming to me.”

From the sounds of it, Hodgins might be creeping closer to 53-man roster contention. Bills head coach Sean McDermott noted how impressed he was with Hodgins during the game, and over the long haul as well.

“Two years of injury, fighting back, that resilient nature that he has,” McDermott said via video conference. “Great to see him work himself back into position to make those plays and for him to make those plays and come through for us was outstanding.”

Instant analysis: Bills extend preseason win streak with last-second win vs. Colts

Instant analysis: #Bills extend preseason win streak with last-second win vs. #Colts (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills offense came to life in the second half, ending with a last-second victory over the Indianapolis Colts 27-24 in their first exhibition game of 2022. Buffalo extended its preseason win streak to nine games in the effort.

Buffalo kept all of their starters on the sidelines for the game, giving several reserves a chance in the spotlight. With most of the Bills roster seemingly in order, it was a game in which several depth players were battling for a depth roster spot.

The Bills second-string defense performed well on the afternoon, forcing two turnovers in the first half and putting up the first points of the season. Boogie Basham sacked Indianapolis quarterback Nick Foles, forcing a turnover. Third-round pick Terrel Bernard scooped up the fumble and rumbled 69 yards to the end zone, giving the Bills a 7-3 lead.

Jaquan Johnson also recorded an interception in the first half. Baylon Specter registered 10 tackles to lead both teams. Andre Smith, Prince Emili, and Daniel Joseph also provided sacks.

Overall, Buffalo’s second defense held Indianapolis to only a field goal. Colts starting quarterback Matt Ryan went 6-of-10 for 58 passing yards. It was a solid showing for the unit, as they enter the year seemingly in regular season form.

The rookie cornerback duo of Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford kept the Colts receivers under wraps. Both recorded two tackles and a pass defensed. In addition, both rookies limited the Colts’ receivers’ yards after catch.

Buffalo’s offense, for its part, sputtered throughout the first half. Case Keenum struggled to gain any short of rhythm, throwing two interceptions, including a very poor interception in the red zone. He also lost a fumble on a sack.

All told, Keenum ended the day 11-of-18 for 86 passing yards.

While the offense had its issues in the first half, there were multiple players who stepped up and made their presence known. On only three carries, Zack Moss gained 37 yards, including a 27-yard rush in which he bounced out wide and found space. Rookie Khalil Shakir caught five passes for 92 yards.

The Bills offense found its pulse in the second half under Matt Barkley. Barkley led the Bills on both of their offensive scoring drives and helped set up the game-winning field goal Tyler Bass. Barkley ended up 18-of-24 for 224 passing yards in one half of work.

Wide receiver Isaiah Hodges and running back Raheem Blackshear flashed in the second half, helping lead the charge back for the victory. Hodges had a game-high nine receptions for 77 receiving yards. Blackshear, meanwhile, caught four passes for 60 yards out of the backfield. He also plowed into the end zone for the game-tying score.

The end results sweetened the game after a sour first half.

The Bills defense largely was solid in the game, while the offense found its footing in the second half. Still, there are some concerns that will be addressed moving forward.

The Buffalo offense committed five turnovers, with Keenum under center for four of the turnovers. Jamison Crowder had a ball bounce off his hands and turn into a Colts interception.

The Bills committed 11 penalties during the game. The deep depth defensive linemen struggled to get pressure in the second half.

Still, there was a lot of promising play from many players, making the depth decisions much more intriguing as the preseason progresses.

Buffalo takes on the Denver Broncos on Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.

Bills sign 10 players to reserve/future contracts for 2022

#Bills sign 10 players to reserve/future contracts for 2022:

The Buffalo Bills made what is often the first transaction a team will make following the conclusion of their season that was.

The team announced that 10 players were signed to reserve/future contracts for the 2022 season.

Those are:

  • DT Brandin Bryant
  • G Jacob Capra
  • WR Tanner Gentry
  • LB Joe Giles-Harris
  • DB Tim Harris
  • WR Isaiah Hodgins
  • DE Mike Love
  • DB Nick McCloud
  • TE Quintin Morris
  • DB Josh Thomas

Of this group, Bryant and Giles-Harris saw playing time in backup and special teams roles for the Bills on two game days this season. Hodgins appeared in a handful of snaps in one outing.

McCloud was active for two games but those came with the Cincinnati Bengals. At the end of training camp, McCloud, a UDFA signing by the team, was cut by Buffalo. Cincy then claimed him on waivers but he made his way back to Orchard Park eventually.

A reserve/future contract guarantees that a player cannot be signed by another team. The deal goes into effect once the new league year begins and will count towards the next season’s salary cap and 90-man roster for the offseason and training camp.

The deals are typically signed for the league minimum without a signing bonus attached.

Bills elevate Isaiah Hodgins, Bobby Hart from practice squad ahead of Patriots meeting

#Bills elevate Isaiah Hodgins, Bobby Hart from practice squad ahead of #Patriots meeting:

The Buffalo Bills brought two players up from their practice squad on Friday ahead of their Week 16 meeting against the New England Patriots.

The team announced that wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins and offensive lineman Bobby Hart are the two taxi squad players now with the team.

In somewhat corresponding moves, the Bills (8-6) also signed two players to their practice squad. Those are wide receiver Austin Proehl and punter Jamie Gillan (They are not taking Hodgins & Hart’s spots, the Bills had openings.)

Both Hodgins and Hart being elevated have to do with the Bills (8-6) having players on their Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Over the past few days, both wide receivers Gabriel Davis and Cole Beasley ended up on the designation. Both are also unvaccinated, so they have already been ruled out vs. the Patriots (9-5).

Because of that, Hodgins will likely be active on game day as a depth player. He was a 2020 sixth-round pick by the Bills and would be making his NFL debut.

On the other hand, Hart has a chance of not suiting up.

Offensive linemen Dion Dawkins and Jon Feliciano have spent a bit of time on the Reserve/COVID-19 list already. Both are also vaccinated.

Per NFL rules, since they have gotten their shots, with one negative COVID test and no symptoms, they could return to play as late Sunday morning.

In that case, there’s a chance Hart would be inactive on game day even though he was called up.

Time will tell who can return from the COVID list.

Some Bills players celebrated Washington win Marshawn Lynch style playing DDR

Some #Bills players had some fun after beating Washington the way Beast Mode would have…

Marshawn Lynch would say some of the current Buffalo Bills players are having the time of their lives.

In Week 3, the Bills put together a second-straight blowout win over the Washington Football Team. After it, they celebrated in a Lynch-approved way.

Somewhere, the video game Dance Dance Revolution was discovered by wide receivers Isaiah McKenzie and Isaiah Hodgins. Running back Zack Moss was there too, and he posted a video of the two dueling off in a game of DDR following Buffalo’s recent win.

That video by Moss was shared by Bills Wire’s Bradley Gelber:

Who won? We’re not sure. But we just know somewhere Lynch is smiling.

Lynch is now a national treasure. Any time he is on camera, it seems to always put a smile on your face.

Some forget that actually started back in Buffalo with the Bills… both on and off the field. Formerly a first-round pick of the Bills in 2007, Lynch’s national stardom took off once he left for the Seattle Seahawks.

But not only did his pro football career start in Buffalo, so did his work on camera. Lynch’s first epic video that made the masses laugh was him loving chain restaurants in Buffalo during his rookie season with the Bills.

In that ESPN segment, Lynch to Appwent lebee’s and then Dave and Buster’s. Among the games he played there? DDR, of course.

Here is the Lynch spoof from back in the day for those who need a reminder or just want a laugh:

5 most surprising cuts made by the Buffalo Bills

5 most surprising cuts made by the #Bills:

The Buffalo Bills trimmed their roster from near 80 men to 53 on Tuesday in accordance with the NFL’s deadline.

It’s always a tough day across the league, but that’s the nature of business. The day also comes with more than a handful of surprises.

With that, here are the five  most head-turning cuts made by the Bills:

Bills injury updates from minicamp including Zack Moss, Cody Ford

Buffalo Bills injury updates from 2021 training camp.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott provided a couple of key injury updates during his team’s mandatory minicamp this week.

At this point in the offseason with no real football in the rearview mirror nor en route, things are pretty healthy. Still, we have a couple of injuries that are not going to be put to the test.

Bigger names that were hot topics for McDermott regarding injuries were running back Zack Moss and offensive lineman Cody Ford. In the playoffs, Moss saw his season come to an end via an ankle injury against the Colts. Ford had a slew of injuries when he was taken out of the lineup about halfway through the season.

In terms of both players, McDermott said they will not practice this week. The duo will take off until training camp begins in late July.

“For those two, Cody and Zack, they haven’t really been able to get back out there like they would like to at this point. We look forward to getting them back at training camp,” McDermott said.

The coach added the Moss has done “a phenomenal job rehabbing.”

Reserve safety Josh Thomas, who was practicing during voluntary OTA practices in recent weeks, is not working out during minicamp. However, McDermott indicated that he’s closer to returning than both Ford and Moss.

In the most positive of notes, two wideouts, Isaiah Hodgins and Cole Beasley, appeared to be back to full health, or at least close to it. Beasley played through the postseason in 2020 with a broken bone in his leg.

After doing so, Beasley did not workout at OTAs in recent weeks. During the first day of minicamp, he did.

Hodgins, who missed his entire rookie season due to a shoulder injury, also was participating. Hodgins even caught the attention of some onlookers with some of his plays on Tuesday.
