Nuggets’ Hunter Tyson drops second 30-point game in G League

Nuggets rookie Hunter Tyson dropped a career high on assignment in the G League with the Gold in a loss to the Squadron.

Denver Nuggets rookie Hunter Tyson on Tuesday dropped a career high on assignment in the G League with the Grand Rapids Gold in a loss to the Birmingham Squadron.

Tyson produced 34 points, eight rebounds and one steal in 28 minutes of work in the 147-113 loss at home. He finished 11-of-18 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, as the Gold dropped to 2-1 in the regular season.

The 37th pick registered his second 30-point game with the performance. He is the seventh player in the G League this season to record at least 30 points in fewer than 30 minutes.

Tyson, who signed a four-year contract after five years at Clemson, has spent the majority of the season with the Gold. He has logged only eight appearances with the Nuggets, totaling two points, five rebounds and one assist in 20 minutes.

The 23-year-old is averaging 23.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one steal on 39.8% shooting from 3-point range in 14 games with the Gold. He leads the Gold in scoring this season and has scored 20 points or more 10 times.

With playing time at a premium in Denver, Tyson will likely continue to see extended minutes in the G League. That playing time should enable him to continue the transition to the next level and improve his game.

Hunter Tyson has career night

Former Clemson forward Hunter Tyson scored a career-high on Saturday night.

Former Clemson forward Hunter Tyson had a career night in the G League on Saturday night.

Playing for the Denver Nuggets’ G League team, Tyson scored a career-high 33 points on 10 for 17 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Grand Rapids Gold’s 121-83 win over the Wisconsin Herd.

In his final season at Clemson, Tyson led the team in scoring with a career-high 15.3 points per game on 47.9% shooting from the field and 40.5% from beyond the arc. His ascension as a fifth-year senior prompted the Nuggets to draft him at pick No. 37 in the 2023 NBA draft in June.

Although he has only played 20 total minutes in the NBA, Tyson’s performance in the G League is a good sign that he could stay in the league for years, possibly helping Denver win back-to-back championships this season.

Dabo Swinney on if Clemson plans to dip into the transfer portal to add a QB

Dabo Swinney is comfortable with where his team is at quarterback right now.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held a press conference Tuesday and was asked about the Tigers’ current quarterback situation and if they plan on looking to add a quarterback from the transfer portal.

With the departure of backup quarterback Hunter Helms, the Tigers could be seen as thin at the position. Regardless, Swinney is comfortable with where this team is at the position and doesn’t plan on addressing it in the portal.

“No, we talk about that at every position, but we like the guys we have, and we like who’s coming,” Swinney said. “So, we feel pretty good about the direction that we have there.”

“If Paul wasn’t here and we didn’t feel like we feel about Trent Pearman, then we would probably have to go find somebody else,” Swinney said.

The Tigers will return Paul Tyson in a student coach role, but he will also remain their fourth-string quarterback. Tyson gives them comfort at the position with four guys. Swinney will prepare him if No.3 quarterback Trent Pearman can’t go.

“We really, really like Trent Pearman. He’s got some moxie and savvy,” Swinney said. “And those of you that have watched him play, this kid was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of South Carolina. This ain’t no slouch, now. This kid can play. He needed to get a little bigger, he needed to get a little stronger, but he’s got savvy, he’s got instincts, he’s got moxie. I mean, he is a really, really, really, really good third-team quarterback.

“So, that’s what we got, and then we got Paul, who’s a sixth-year guy who’s got a wealth of experience who could go win the game for us in the Gator Bowl if we need him to. We got him. So, that’s where we are.”

The name people are most likely excited about is Christopher Vizzina, who will take over as the Tigers’ No.2 QB. Vizzina redshirted this season as he prepares for a bigger role down the line.

“We’re excited about CV,” Swinney said of Vizzina, the former blue-chip recruit from Alabama. “We’re kind of executing the plan that we put in place. This was a highly recruited guy that could have gone to a lot of places, and he chose to come (to Clemson). He was only 17, so that was kind of what we recruited him, to redshirt.”

Clemson is in a fine position at quarterback right now, and they have their guy in starting quarterback Cade Klubnik.

A Clemson quarterback was spotted in a boot at practice on Thursday.

Hunter Helms was wearing a boot on his right foot, according to multiple media members in attendance on Thursday. Helms was limited but was still wearing pads, according to The State’s Chapel Fowler.

Helms has been second on the depth chart behind Cade Klubnik this fall camp.

Originally a walk-on, Helms has played in five games over three seasons with the Tigers. Over those five games, he has completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He did not appear in any games in 2022.

Taking second-team snaps instead of Helms on Thursday was Paul Tyson, who transferred to Clemson from Arizona State this offseason. True freshman Christopher Vizzina took third-team reps.

Top-45 prospect puts Tigers in his top 8

A highly-ranked shooting guard in the class of 2024 has put Clemson in his top 8 schools.

Clemson is in the mix for a highly-touted basketball prospect.

Four-star shooting guard Austin Swartz took to social media to announce he is down to eight schools. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard will choose between Clemson, Miami, UConn, Florida State, Notre Dame, Georiga, Virginia Tech and Indiana.

Swartz is the No. 8 shooting guard prospect and the No. 43 overall recruit, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

The Tigers offered him in January after he took an official visit.

Swartz has scheduled six official visits in the coming months, but Clemson is not one of them, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.

“The chemistry between the teammates stood out for me,” Swartz said of Clemson. “That was great to be around, and that is something that I want to be around. That was really the biggest thing, but also being around Coach (Brad) Brownell. This was my first time really being around him and hanging out with him a little bit. They’re all cool people who enjoy being around each other. It’s like one big happy family there.”

Clemson has one verbal commitment to its 2024 class in four-star power forward Dallas Thomas.

ACC players taken in the 2023 NBA draft

Have long-term hopes for any of these players?

It’s no secret that the ACC is in a rough spot right now. Over the past couple of years, the conference’s quality of play has suffered, and the NCAA Tournament selection committee has taken notice, giving the power conference only four at-large bids in each of the past two years.

Now, we’re seeing the lull carry over to the NBA draft. A conference that typically sees one of its own go off the board within the first four picks had to wait until the 12th pick in 2023. In fact, that was the only lottery pick for the conference.

So it stands to reason that there isn’t a lot of hope for this ACC class of incoming NBA players, but stranger things have happened. As we just saw with the champion Denver Nuggets, even a diamond in the rough on draft night can turn into a franchise-altering player. It could happen again with one of these players:

Memphis’ Kendric Davis promoted to draft combine from G League Elite Camp

Former Memphis guard Kendric Davis is among the prospects from the G League Elite Camp invited to the draft combine.

Former Memphis guard Kendric Davis is among the prospects from the G League Elite Camp invited to compete in the draft combine this week, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

Davis will reportedly be joined by Johni Broome (Auburn), Tosan Evbuomwan (Princeton), Jazian Gortman (Overtime Elite), PJ Hall (Clemson), Dillon Jones (Weber State), Sir’Jabari Rice (Texas) and Hunter Tyson (Clemson).

The eight players emerged as the top performers from the various on-court drills, scrimmages and measurement testing over the two-day event in Chicago, Illinois. They will join the 78 other prospects announced last week as participants in the combine.

The eight players selected from the G League Elite Camp to compete in the draft combine were each voted on by teams. They will have the opportunity to perform in front of teams against the top draft prospects this year.

The G League Elite Camp has helped several players advance to the combine and eventually make it to the NBA, including Jose Alvarado, Kenneth Lofton Jr. and Terance Mann.

The NBA draft will take place on June 22.

Eight ACC players selected for Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Two recent Notre Dame players could have an NBA shot.

There are several avenues for NBA hopefuls to make it to the league. One of the better-known ones is the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which is open only to recent college seniors. This is the oldest amateur tournament in the country, so it carries some weight.

The tournament doesn’t generate NBA draft picks every year, but Tyrese Martin ended a four-year drought when he became a second-round selection in 2022. [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] was drafted after taking part in the 2015 tournament. Other notable tournament alumni include Jimmy Butler, Tim Hardaway, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, John Stockton, Dave Cowens, Earl Monroe and Rick Barry.

This year, eight recent ACC seniors have the opportunity to compete in the tournament. While there aren’t any guarantees for what happens afterwards, it’s a great way to get noticed by scouts. Here are the players who represented the ACC during the past season and will get a good look by folks who know the professional game well:

UNC wing Leaky Black finishes second in ACC Defensive Player of the Year voting

UNC basketball wing Leaky Black finished second in ACC Defensive Player of the Year voting for the 2022-23 season.

The ACC announced its league awards on Monday afternoon. While UNC basketball players received honors, they were vastly different than the expectations coming into the season.

Armando Bacot headlined the group. He was a first-team All-ACC selection, coming in second in ACC Player of the Year voting.

No other Tar Heel made it on the All-ACC teams.

UNC wing [autotag]Leaky Black[/autotag] came in second in ACC Defensive Player of the Year voting. Despite being a guy opposing coaches consistently raved about on the defensive side of the ball, Black fell 11 votes short of the top spot, which was given to Virginia’s Reece Beekman.

Black consistently guarded opposing team’s best players. Some of his notable performances were holding ACC Player of the Year Isaiah Wong of Miami to just 10 points on 3-of-8 from the field and three turnovers, first-team All-ACC wing Hunter Tyson of Clemson to two shot attempts in 32 minutes and Terquavion Smith of NC State to a combined 10-of-31 in two matchups.

On the season, Black averaged 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He was ranked second in the league in defensive box score plus/minus and fourth in defensive win shares.

He was also part of the All-ACC Defensive Team.

Here is the final voting:

Reece Beekman, Virginia, 29 votes
Leaky Black, North Carolina, 18
Jesse Edwards, Syracuse, 13
Dereck Lively II, Duke, 6
Federiko Federiko, Pitt, 3
Ja’von Franklin, Georgia Tech, 3
Justyn Mutts, Virginia Tech, 2
Norchad Omier, Miami, 1
