Eight ACC players selected for Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Two recent Notre Dame players could have an NBA shot.

There are several avenues for NBA hopefuls to make it to the league. One of the better-known ones is the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which is open only to recent college seniors. This is the oldest amateur tournament in the country, so it carries some weight.

The tournament doesn’t generate NBA draft picks every year, but Tyrese Martin ended a four-year drought when he became a second-round selection in 2022. [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] was drafted after taking part in the 2015 tournament. Other notable tournament alumni include Jimmy Butler, Tim Hardaway, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, John Stockton, Dave Cowens, Earl Monroe and Rick Barry.

This year, eight recent ACC seniors have the opportunity to compete in the tournament. While there aren’t any guarantees for what happens afterwards, it’s a great way to get noticed by scouts. Here are the players who represented the ACC during the past season and will get a good look by folks who know the professional game well:

Hawks’ Tyrese Martin put up 4th straight double-double in G League

Martin put up another double-double effort on assignment to help lead the College Park Skyhawks to a win in the G League.

Atlanta Hawks rookie Tyrese Martin on Thursday put up another double-double effort to help lead the College Park Skyhawks to a win on assignment in the G League.

Martin recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and one assist in the 120-117 victory over the Greensboro Swarm at home. He finished 7-of-15 from the field, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range, in 38 minutes of work.

The 51st pick registered his fourth straight double-double with the performance and 10th of the season. He is averaging 22.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals on 53.6% shooting from the field over that stretch.

Martin has appeared in 13 games with the Hawks but has spent much of the season in the G League. He is averaging 18.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 22 games, and is tied for 23rd in double-doubles and 28th in rebounding.

The team liked the addition of Martin through the draft and believes he has a bright future. He will likely spend some more time in College Park through the end of the G League season this month and then return to Atlanta.

Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best performances from the rookie class this year in the Las Vegas Summer League.

The Las Vegas Summer League came to a conclusion on Sunday as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the New York Knicks to claim the championship trophy.

Of course, No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero dazzled in a limit showing before getting shut down after two games. Further down the draft board, other players stepped up and showed little trouble adjusting to their first NBA action.

With the event now wrapped up, Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best performances from the rookie class this year in games played in Las Vegas.

Note: Players arranged in alphabetical order.

No. 51 pick Tyrese Martin signs two-year contract with Hawks

The Hawks announced that they signed Martin to a multiyear contract after a strong showing in summer league.

Martin joins first-round pick AJ Griffin as additions to the roster in the draft this year. The team has high hopes for both players and believes they can contribute next season and beyond.

Hawks’ AJ Griffin, Tyrese Martin explain summer league goals

Hawks draftees AJ Griffin and Tyrese Martin expressed their excitement to hit the court and meet some of their new teammates.

Atlanta Hawks draftees AJ Griffin and Tyrese Martin were introduced by the team this week and each expressed their excitement to hit the court and meet some of their new teammates.

The Hawks selected Griffin from Duke with the 16th pick in the NBA draft last week. They then acquired the draft rights to Martin from the Golden State Warriors as the 51st pick. They will play in the Las Vegas Summer League as the Hawks’ schedule tips off on July 9.

Griffin explained his objective during the Hawks’ run out west.

Just be able to give your best effort and be competitive. I think it’ll be great to go against everyone else in summer league. We’re looking forward to it and putting our best foot forward.

Said Martin: “I go out there and play the game the right way. I feel like I don’t go out there and try to hunt offense and things like that. I go out there and bring a level of toughness to the game where I rebound on both sides of the backboard. I try to guard the best players and shut them down.”

Griffin, who was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team, averaged 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and one assist on 44.7% shooting from 3-point range last season. He ranked fifth in program history in 3-point percentage and second among freshmen.

Martin averaged 13.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 29 games with the Huskies. He was named to the Big East Championship All-Tournament team after posting 18 points, 7.5 rebounds, two assists and two steals in two games.

The two players have each heard from some of their new teammates, including Trae Young. He spoke with them over the weekend on the phone as Griffin and Martin dined out in Atlanta.

The gesture by Young made an impression on the two.

“He welcomed us again and things like that,” Martin said. “It was definitely great. I can’t wait to meet him in person and get on the court and compete with those guys.”

“That’s the love you get here in Atlanta and I love that,” Griffin said.

Lakers to host Keon Ellis, others for pre-draft workout

Ellis will be among the prospects to participate in a pre-draft workout with the Lakers on Saturday.

Alabama senior Keon Ellis will be among the prospects to participate in a pre-draft workout with the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, the team announced.

Ellis, who was named to the SEC All-Defensive team, averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.8 assists on 43.9% shooting from the field in 33 games. He led the Crimson Tide in rebounding, steals, free-throw percentage (88.1) and 3-point percentage (36.6) last season.

The 6-foot-6 guard is widely projected to be an early-to-mid second-round pick this year after a strong campaign with the Crimson Tide. He has also worked out with Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder among other teams.

In addition to Ellis, the Lakers will also host Villanova guard Collin Gillespie, UConn guard Tyrese Martin, USC guard Drew Peterson, Texas A&M forward Quenton Jackson and Syracuse forward Cole Swider on Saturday.

The Lakers enter the pre-draft process with no picks in either round. The team dealt its first-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans in the trade involving Anthony Davis and their second-round selection was sent to the Washington Wizards in a cap-clearing move.

Despite having no draft picks, the Lakers will still do their due diligence on those fringe prospects that could go undrafted. The team could eventually acquire picks to take a prospect or sign them outright in free agency after the draft.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.
