Potential Sixers undrafted player profiles: Jarkel Joiner

North Carolina State guard Jarkel Joiner is another player who could go undrafted that the Philadelphia 76ers should look into.

The Philadelphia 76ers do not have a draft pick in the 2023 NBA draft on June 22. They traded their first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in the deal that brought James Harden to the City of Brotherly Love at the 2022 deadline, and they were docked second-round picks in 2023 and 2024 by the NBA for tampering.

However, that doesn’t mean the Sixers will or should be inactive around the draft process. There will be a number of talented players who go undrafted, meaning the Sixers should be able to add a young player who could become a rotation piece.

One should not brush off undrafted players. The Miami Heat, who are in the NBA Finals, are a prime example of investing in young talent and giving them time to develop. They have seven undrafted players on their roster, including four in their rotation.

Next up in the undrafted player profiles is Jarkel Joiner of North Carolina State who can handle the ball as well as put the ball in the basket.

NC State guard Jarkel Joiner: ‘I try to stand out in different ways’

Rookie Wire caught up with Joiner to discuss the pre-draft process, his collegiate career, playing with Terquavion Smith and more.

Jarkel Joiner has had quite a journey to this point of his basketball career, and the 24-year-old believes that has helped prepare him for the next chapter in his life.

Joiner, who is from Oxford, Mississippi, began his collegiate career by playing two seasons at Cal State Bakersfield. After earning second-team all-conference honors as a sophomore, Joiner returned home and spent three years at Ole Miss.

The opportunity to return to Oxford proved rather meaningful to Joiner. He was able to play in front of his friends and family and put himself on the basketball radar in the process. After graduating, Joiner transferred to NC State for his final year of eligibility.

It resulted in his best season to date.

Joiner was named to the All-ACC second team after averaging 17 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals on 35.4% shooting from 3-point range. He finished fourth in the conference in scoring and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.25).

The 6-foot-1 guard produced some of his best performances against the top teams in the conference, including a 21-point, nine-assist effort on Jan. 4 in a win over No. 16 Duke. He also tied a season high of 29 points on Feb. 19 as the Wolfpack defeated North Carolina.

Now, Joiner is looking to carry that momentum into the pre-draft process.

He competed in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament last month and was one of the top scorers, averaging 13.7 points, four assists and three rebounds on 38.9% shooting from 3-point range in three games. He was also tied for the third-highest vertical jump at 32.5 inches.

Joiner is training daily in preparation for the draft with other prospects. He has already worked out with the Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Hornets and has others scheduled in the coming weeks.

Eight ACC players selected for Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Two recent Notre Dame players could have an NBA shot.

There are several avenues for NBA hopefuls to make it to the league. One of the better-known ones is the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which is open only to recent college seniors. This is the oldest amateur tournament in the country, so it carries some weight.

The tournament doesn’t generate NBA draft picks every year, but Tyrese Martin ended a four-year drought when he became a second-round selection in 2022. [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] was drafted after taking part in the 2015 tournament. Other notable tournament alumni include Jimmy Butler, Tim Hardaway, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, John Stockton, Dave Cowens, Earl Monroe and Rick Barry.

This year, eight recent ACC seniors have the opportunity to compete in the tournament. While there aren’t any guarantees for what happens afterwards, it’s a great way to get noticed by scouts. Here are the players who represented the ACC during the past season and will get a good look by folks who know the professional game well:

Notre Dame battles NC State hard but still winless on road

Still nothing to show for a good effort.

To Notre Dame’s credit, it was about as good an effort as it’s shown on the road this season. But like every other game away from Purcell Pavilion, a victory just wasn’t meant to be. This time, it was NC State reaping the benefits, and the Irish will head home after an 85-82 loss.

During the first half, the Irish (9-12, 1-9) turned an 11-point deficit into a seven-point lead. The Wolfpack (16-5, 6-4) cut that lead to three before halftime, then went in front themselves early in the second half, which was a dogfight. While there wasn’t really any one moment that doomed the Irish, they couldn’t convert on a number of good looks or open shots to make a close game even closer or, in some cases, to tie it up. It also did not help that they were crushed in the turnover battle, 15-2.

Jarkel Joiner was the Wolfpack’s big player with 28 points and six rebounds. Terquavion Smith, the ACC’s scoring leader who fresh off a serious injury scare Saturday at North Carolina, had 17 points to go with six assists. D.J. Burns Jr. scored 14, and Casey Morsell added 11.

[autotag]Cormac Ryan[/autotag] and [autotag]JJ Starling[/autotag] paced the Irish with 19 and 18 points, respectively. [autotag]Marcus Hammond[/autotag] had a nice stats line of 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. [autotag]Dane Goodwin[/autotag] also scored 11, and [autotag]Ven Allen-Lubin[/autotag] added 10 off the bench.
