What’s happening in Chiefs Kingdom?

Kansas City lost a heartbreaker in its season opener to the Detroit Lions. It was an ugly performance offensively, especially for the wide receiver corps. The Chiefs will have some extra time to regroup and fix some things as they turn the page to Week 2 when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here are the top stories on this edition of Chiefs Check-in for the morning of Friday, September 7:

Ranking Chiefs’ potential opponents for NFL season opener

Our @Nicolas_Roesch ranks the best potential opponents for the #Chiefs’ season opener.

The 2023 NFL schedule will be released on Thursday, May 11.

As the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Thursday night season opener on September 7. With nine possible opponents to choose from, the league is tasked with picking the most intriguing matchup.

Let’s rank the best potential matchups for that opening game:

Chiefs’ Travis Kelce laughs off botched first pitch at Guardians’ home opener

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce pointed to his touchdown celebrations as the reason for his short first pitch at the Cleveland Guardians’ home opener on Friday. | from @TheJohnDillon

Travis Kelce is the NFL’s preeminent tight end and a former high-school quarterback, but the Kansas City Chiefs star proved to possess less-than-phenomenal baseball skills when throwing out the first pitch at the Cleveland Guardians’ home opener on Friday.

Appearing with his mother Donna Kelce for the occasion,  Travis got a little too flashy with his windup, and ultimately bungled the first pitch, spiking the ball into the ground. After Twitter was set abuzz by the video, he made a point to defend himself on the platform, pointing to his tendency to spike footballs after touchdowns as his only explanation for the embarrassing affair.

Check it out:

It is never easy to make such an error on camera, but botching a first pitch on opening day in front of tens of thousands of fans from his hometown was sure to be humiliating for the future Hall of Famer.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had his own take on the matter, asking Kansas City’s beloved Royals to give Kelce a second chance at Kauffman Stadium later in the season.

To his credit, Kelce did manage to cover the runner at home plate. One thing is certain after this catastrophe; the All-Pro tight end made the right call by pursuing a career in football instead of trying to make it in the MLB.

Tyler Lockett plans to welcome Russell Wilson with open arms

Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett plans to greet his old friend Russell Wilson with a hug when Seattle hosts the Broncos Monday night.

The Seattle Seahawks have a new offensive captain this year, electing wide receiver Tyler Lockett to replace Russell Wilson, who held the position for the last nine seasons. Lockett will face off against his former teammate on Monday when the Seahawks host the Broncos.

The new captain was asked how he planned to approach his old friend on gameday.

“I know that when I see him, I’m going to give him a hug, talk to him, all that different type of stuff, wish him good luck,” Lockett said on Tuesday. “Not only in this game, but for the rest of the season and for the rest of his career, as we continue to talk outside of football and stuff like that. But I mean, Russ has done so much for this community.”

Naturally, the fans might react to the Seahawks’ former franchise quarterback with a little less love when he takes the field at Lumen on Monday night. Lockett does have some advice for the 12s, however.

“I think that Seattle should cheer him on for everything that he’s done, helped bring a Super Bowl to this community, all that different type of stuff,” Lockett said. “He’s an amazing guy.

Packers open home schedule in 2022 with primetime tilt against rival Bears

The Packers will host the rival Bears in Week 2 for the 2022 home opener.

After traveling to Minnesota to play the Vikings in Week 1, the Green Bay Packers will return to Lambeau Field for the home opener in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears.

The game is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 18. The primetime tilt means the Packers and Bears will face off in primetime for the 17th consecutive season.

This year will mark the fourth straight season that the Packers opened on the road and then returned for the home opener in Week 2.

The last time the Packers opened with back-to-back games against the NFC North was 2020 when Green Bay faced Minnesota on the road in Week 1 and Detroit in the home opener in Week 2.

The Packers haven’t lost to the Bears at Lambeau Field since 2015.

The Packers are a perfect 6-0 against the Bears (3-0 at home) since hiring Matt LaFleur. The average margin of victory at Lambeau Field has been 13 points, including last season’s 15-point win (45-30).

Chiefs to host Chargers in home opener on Thursday Night Football

The #Chiefs are set to host the #Chargers on Thursday Night Football for their home opener.

Amazon is getting its wish.

As was rumored by NBC Sports’ Peter King, the Kansas City Chiefs are one-half of the opening Thursday Night Football game on Amazon Prime Video. They’ll face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2 on Thursday, September 15 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Amazon wanted to get a big quarterback matchup as the new hosts of Thursday Night Football, and they’re getting one of the most exciting matchups with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert in a very tough AFC West division. Thankfully, the game is going to be played at home for Kansas City, where they’ll get a nice home-field advantage.

“It’s an incredible honor and opportunity to be selected for the inaugural game of Prime Video’s first season as the exclusive streaming partner of Thursday Night Football,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said, via team press release. “We’re proud that Amazon took this opportunity to showcase our fans and the Arrowhead Experience when we host the Chargers for our home opener at GEHA Field this season and look forward to seeing the rest of our 2022 schedule next month.”

The Chiefs lead the all-time series over the Chargers 65-58-1. Los Angeles has won two of the last three games against Kansas City, but they lost a key game to the Chiefs in December that had a big impact on the outcome of the AFC West division.

Joel Embiid asked 76ers fans to support Ben Simmons even though he wants out: ‘He’s still our brother’

This was…nice?

It has been a rough few months in Philadelphia for the 76ers. Ben Simmons’ trade demand has thrown a wrench in just about everything.

Simmons and the team seemed to peace things up on Friday when the two sides finally spoke to one another. I can tell you right now, though, that doesn’t mean a thing to 76ers fans.

They are not feeling Simmons right now. At all. There’s absolutely no love for Ben there right now. Just look at what they were doing to Simmons’ jerseys ahead of the game. They were even wearing t-shirts that were clowning the Sixers’ point guard.

That didn’t stop Joel Embiid from voicing his support for his teammate, though. At the 76ers home opener, Embiid told 76ers fans they’ve still got to support him and the team.

“A lot has happened these last few months and I urge you guys to continue to support us and our teammate, Ben, because he still our brother. Let’s go.”

That was nice. A bit awkward, for sure. But still a very nice gesture. And it might go a long way in convincing Simmons to actually get back on the court and play.

I guess we’ll see how Sixers’ fans respond to this. It probably ain’t enough to stop the boos from flying for Simmons when he returns, but hey. At least Embiid tried.

Nate Oats will head into his second season as head coach of Alabama men’s basketball team with a top-25 recruiting class that has a lot of Crimson Tide fans excited.

Today, it was announced on Instragram live via Alabama super-fan, Luke Ratliff (@Fluffopotamus), that the Crimson Tide will be facing off against Jacksonville State on Tuesday, Nov. 10 for the 2020 home opener in Coleman Coliseum.

The 2019-2020 college basketball season was cut short for Alabama during the SEC Tournament in Nashville due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, their regular season record ended up being just one game above .500 (16-15).

Oats will look to lead this team into a postseason that fans can look forward to. With the cancellation of basketball’s tournaments in 2020, and Alabama’s first-round exit in the 2019 NIT vs. Norfolk St., the last time Crimson Tide fans looked forward to the postseason was with Colin Sexton in 2018.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on all things Alabama basketball as the season gets closer and the offseason progresses!
