The Emmys’ in memoriam segment featured a beautiful performance of the Friends theme song for Matthew Perry

This was such a moving Emmys tribute to Matthew Perry and many other television greats who have recently died.

The Emmys always honor the television greats that have passed on during the annual ceremony, but Monday night’s in memoriam hit especially hard.

The ceremony welcomed singer Charlie Puth and country duo The War and Treaty to perform the theme song for Friends, which pays homage to recently deceased show star Matthew Perry.

The performance of The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There for You” took on added significance as it bid farewell to many notable names that have died since the last Emmys ceremony.

The video ended on a still of Perry, whose passing is just still such a sad reality after the Friends actor died last October at the age of 54.

The performance here was very moving, and you have to feel the love in the room for Perry and so many of these wonderful television figures who have passed on with how this song weaved into the in memoriam tribute.

Matthew Perry’s costars have released statements about the late actor on Instagram.

It’s been nearly a month since Matthew Perry died at the age of 54, with tributes pouring in from all over the internet for the late actor who gave us so many amazing moments on screen, including countless ones as Chandler Bing on Friends.

Since then, his Friends castmates released a joint statement about their beloved costar, they attended his funeral, and now, each of them has released a statement of his or her own on Instagram (UPDATE: Lisa Kudrow did after we published, so we added it to this list).

The late Matthew Perry had a terrific career as an actor with so many standout parts from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip to West Wing, but it’s the role of Chandler Bing on Friends that will what he’s most remembered for.

The actor who died Saturday, per multiple reports, was a wise-cracker as Chandler, but it was the heart and vulnerability that he portrayed Chandler with that made him a fan favorite.

There are so many Chandler moments from that 10-year run on Friends to focus on, but here are a few that we’ll remember him for as the world mourns Perry’s death at age 54.

Friends star Matthew Perry has reportedly died at the age of 54.

Veteran actor Matthew Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the NBC hit sitcom Friends, has reportedly died at the age of 54.

The Los Angeles Times cited law enforcement to confirm news of Perry’s death, as he was reportedly found in unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home Saturday. There is no sign of foul play, per the report.

Perry appeared on various television shows to start his acting career, ranging from sitcoms like Charles in Charge and Boys Will be Boys to dramas like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Highway to Heaven.

His big break came by playing Bing on Friends, which debuted in 1994 and became one of the defining television series of the 1990s. It was part of the famed NBC Thursday night “Must See TV” lineup alongside classics like Seinfeld, Frasier, Will & Grace and Scrubs.

Perry received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Bing in 2002, and he won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of Friends‘ ensemble in 1996.

Outside of Friends, Perry’s career also featured a starring role on Aaron Sorkin’s short-lived Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, a starring role on CBS’ revamp of The Odd Couple and feature film roles in The Whole Nine Yards, Fools Rush In, Almost Heroes, Serving Sara, The Ron Clark Story and 17 Again.

He reappeared with his old Friends co-stars on a Max reunion special in 2021 and published a book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, in 2022, which detailed in part his struggles with addiction.

With Perry’s portrayal of Bing being one of the most beloved sitcom performances of all time, many fans of the show responded to news of Perry’s death with sadness and fond remembrances of his acting.

Tyler Lockett plans to welcome Russell Wilson with open arms

Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett plans to greet his old friend Russell Wilson with a hug when Seattle hosts the Broncos Monday night.

The Seattle Seahawks have a new offensive captain this year, electing wide receiver Tyler Lockett to replace Russell Wilson, who held the position for the last nine seasons. Lockett will face off against his former teammate on Monday when the Seahawks host the Broncos.

The new captain was asked how he planned to approach his old friend on gameday.

“I know that when I see him, I’m going to give him a hug, talk to him, all that different type of stuff, wish him good luck,” Lockett said on Tuesday. “Not only in this game, but for the rest of the season and for the rest of his career, as we continue to talk outside of football and stuff like that. But I mean, Russ has done so much for this community.”

Naturally, the fans might react to the Seahawks’ former franchise quarterback with a little less love when he takes the field at Lumen on Monday night. Lockett does have some advice for the 12s, however.

“I think that Seattle should cheer him on for everything that he’s done, helped bring a Super Bowl to this community, all that different type of stuff,” Lockett said. “He’s an amazing guy.”

The heart-tugging story behind Jim Nantz’s signature phrase ‘Hello, friends’

As golf catchphrases go, Jim Nantz’s “Hello, friends,” is, to borrow from another go-to expression, “Better than most.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. — As catchphrases go, Jim Nantz’s “Hello, friends,” is, well, to borrow from another go-to expression, “Better than most.”

He’s delivered it for countless voicemail messages as well as in an episode of the former hit CBS show “How I Met Your Mother.” So, how did Nantz coin his signature phrase? There’s a good story behind it that dates to almost 20 years ago.

Nantz was as close as father and son could be, and so it came as no surprise that he embraced helping his father, Jim II, endure Alzheimer’s with both strength and grace. It was important to Nantz that his voice be in his father’s room, so he made sure his father’s assisted-living center in Houston always had his TV schedule. On his way to the 2002 PGA Championship, Nantz visited his dad and told him he was going to deliver a special coded message in the broadcast for him.

With an ever-present smile, a booming voice and a gift for gab, Nantz’s father, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1995 and died in 2008, always owned a room. During the opening to the Saturday show, Nantz started the telecast by saying “Hello, friends,” an homage to his Pops, who had a knack for making fast friends.

The salutation struck a chord with Eli Spielman, Nantz’s friend and co-author of his book, “Always By My Side: The Healing Gift of a Father’s Love.” He phoned Nantz and advised him to use the expression again at the top of the next broadcast.

“If he didn’t make that call, it probably would’ve been a one-and-done,” Nantz says of what has become his catchphrase. “I’ve used it almost every broadcast ever since. It’s not some made-up corn-ball saying; it has meaning to me and it has meaning every time I say it on the air. When I say it looking into that dark hole, that big lens, I feel my dad’s presence. It calms me.”

The long goodbye – 13 years in this case – of watching a loved one disappear before his eyes, and not being able to do a thing about it, inspired Nantz to channel his passion into trying to find a cure. In 2011, the Nantz National Alzheimer’s Center at Houston Methodist Hospital opened and has become a leader in the fight against the debilitating disease.

When Nantz opens the broadcast of the 86th Masters on CBS this weekend with those famous two words, it will have greater meaning to him than one could ever have imagined.

7 things we learned from the ‘Friends’ reunion

The special is live on HBO Max.

The Friends reunion dropped on Thursday — of course it had to be the day on which the show made its home on NBC and was a humongous hit —  on HBO Max, and there was so much to take in.

In the hour and 45 minutes, we got to see the six actors back together, touring the old sets, reminiscing, talking about the love they had for each other and telling some stories we hadn’t heard before.

There were also so many returning guest stars, blooper reels, James Corden hosting, readings of the old scripts and some famous people talking about why they love the series.

The trailer for the Friends reunion special on HBO Max dropped on Wednesday afternoon, and yeah, it looks awesome. From everything we know about the special, we know it’s going to be quite an event, with plenty of guest stars and such.

But what did we learn from the trailer? Let’s run through a few things we saw that are notable ahead of the special dropping on May 27th, from the test (!) to the visit to some of those iconic sets. (And while you’re at it, we did a whole Friends week with content devoted to everything from ranking the friends to the greatest sports moments from the show).
