UFC on ABC 3 results: Bill Algeo survives insane triangle choke before Herbert Burns fades in bizarre finish

Bill Algeo outlasted Herbert Burns after surviving a crazy submission attack.

[autotag]Bill Algeo[/autotag]’s performance Saturday was as resilient as they come.

The UFC featherweight endured a whole lot of danger in his UFC on ABC 3 matchup with [autotag]Herbert Burns[/autotag] before Burns was forced to quit in their preliminary card matchup.

Algeo (16-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) officially scored a TKO over Burns (11-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC), putting him away at the 1:50 mark of Round 2, but there was more to it.

Early in the first round, Burns had Algeo in a tight triangle choke. While looking to end the fight with a submission, Burns was also landing heavy elbows from the position. Algeo managed to stay composed and eventually set himself free after a couple of minutes.

From that point on, it was all Algeo, as he poured the pressure on a fading Burns. The fight ended in Bizarre fashion, with Burns not answering the referee’s call to continue on.

It’s unclear what led to Burns being unable to continue, but he was carried out of the octagon by his brother and fellow UFC fighter, Gilbert Burns.

A person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie after Quarantillo (15-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) announced he had signed to fight Burns (11-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a recent Instagram post.

The UFC is back on pay-per-view this week with a heavyweight title trilogy rematch atop the bill.

UFC 252 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-related id=543758,543764]

In the main event, heavyweight champion [autotag]Stipe Miocic[/autotag] (19-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) meets former heavyweight and light heavyweight champ [autotag]Daniel Cormier[/autotag] (22-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) for the third time. Their series is tied at 1-1, and Cormier has said he will retire after this fight. The fight is a pick’em with the oddsmakers and our readers like Miocic. But nine of our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts are picking Cormier to go out on top.

In the co-main event, unbeaten bantamweight prospect [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) takes on veteran fighter [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (17-6-1 MMA, 9-5 UFC). O’Malley is a heavy favorite around 3-1, but he’s only got a 9-5 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, former heavyweight champ [autotag]Junior Dos Santos[/autotag] (21-7 MMA, 15-6 UFC) returns against [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC). And though Rozenstruik is a slight favorite and is our readers’ pick, our staff members are taking Dos Santos heavily at a 10-4 clip.

[autotag]Herbert Burns[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is a heavy favorite in his featherweight bout against [autotag]Daniel Pineda[/autotag] (26-13 MMA, 3-4 UFC), which was moved up from the prelims. Only one of our pickers is taking Pineda in an upset.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) is a sizable favorite at bantamweight against [autotag]John Dodson[/autotag] (21-11 MMA, 10-6 UFC), and he’s got a big 10-4 picks lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Miocic (52 percent), O’Malley (72 percent), Rozenstruik (54 percent), Dvalishvili (60 percent) and Burns (84 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Herbert Burns: UFC 252 foe Daniel Pineda ‘more dangerous’ than champ Alexander Volkanovski

Herbert Burns has a high opinion of UFC 252 opponent Daniel Pineda.

[autotag]Herbert Burns[/autotag] has a high opinion of UFC 252 opponent [autotag]Daniel Pineda[/autotag]. In fact, he’s willing to go so far as to put him in the same sentence as UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski.

Burns (11-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has said leading up to Saturday’s event, which takes place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+, that he thinks Pineda (26-13, 3-4 UFC) is a “more dangerous” opponent than Volkanovski (22-1 MMA, 9-0 UFC). Many would scoff at that notion, but the Brazilian competitor doubled down on his opinion during Thursday’s virtual media day.

“Daniel Pineda doesn’t go to decision,” Burns told reporters, including MMA Junkie. “He’s not a decision man. He goes there and finishes the job and doesn’t let the judges dictate the results of the fight. He always goes to for the finish. That’s why I think he’s more dangerous than Volkanovski. He’s dangerous and goes for the knockout or submission. That’s why he’s more dangerous than the champion.”

[lawrence-related id=543758,543764]

After introducing himself to the UFC through Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2019, Burns has made his mark quickly. He’s picked up first-round finishes at UFC on ESPN+ 24 in January and UFC 250 in June, and now he’s primed for his third contest.

Burns said he’s feeling increasingly comfortable in the octagon, and is chasing a statement win over Pineda.

“It will be my third fight here at the (UFC) Apex and so far two submission victories here in the first round,” Burns said. “Hopefully I can keep the same thing going. … They will close the cage and it will just be me and Daniel Pineda there and it will be a war and I will be victorious.”

If Burns can push his UFC start to 3-0, he said he anticipates making a big jump in the featherweight pecking order. He said he carries the same approach for his career as his brother, Gilbert Burns, and clearly it’s been a productive mentality.

“Whoever wants to be the champion, you can’t choose your opponents,” Burns said. “That’s why I’m not going to choose opponents I’m just going to fight to the top. … I think with this victory over Pineda, a very tough opponent, I should be inside the rankings.”
