Robelis Despaigne to debut on stacked UFC 299 lineup in Miami

UFC 299 has added Robelis Despaigne, the hyped, hulking heavyweight who medaled in Olympic taekwondo.

Highly touted heavyweight prospect and Cuban taekwondo Olympian [autotag]Robelis Despaigne[/autotag] has his first UFC assignment.

At UFC 299, Despaigne (4-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will make his promotional debut vs. [autotag]Josh Parisian[/autotag] (15-7 MMA, 2-4 UFC), the UFC announced Tuesday. The event takes place March 9 at Kaseya Center in Miami.

Despaigne, 35, is a decorated taekwondo practitioner. He won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympic Games in the 80kg weight class. He also is a two-time bronze medalist in the World Championships (2013 and 2015).

Since his pivot to MMA over the COVID-19 pandemic, Despaigne has won all four of his professional bouts by knockout in the first round. His past three appearances have lasted a combined 19 seconds, with the two most recent lasting three and four seconds, respectively.

Following the four-second TKO of Miles Banks at Fury FC 84 in December, UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard phoned promoter Eric Garcia immediately after the bout’s conclusion to offer Despaigne a multifight deal.

“My ambitions have been very high through everything I’ve done,” Despaigne told MMA Junkie in December when detailing his journey through combat sports. “That’s not going to change now. I want to fight three or four times next year. That’s for sure. And I want to hopefully fight for the belt in one or two years. … I’m going to fight for the belt – and win it.”

On the flip side of the equation, Parisian is an alumnus of “The Ultimate Fighter” and Dana White’s Contender Series. Currently on a two-fight skid, Parisian looks to get back in the win column for the first time since June 2022.

With the addition, the UFC 299 lineup includes:

  • Sean O’Malley vs. Marlon Vera
  • Dustin Poirier vs. Benoit Saint-Denis
  • Jailton Almeida vs. Curtis Blaydes

UFC on ESPN 51 video: Martin Buday extends streak with first-round kimura of Josh Parisian

Martin Buday made it 4-0 in the octagon with a dominant finish of Josh Parisian on the UFC on ESPN 51 prelims.

[autotag]Martin Buday[/autotag] kept on rolling in the heavyweight division when he delivered his most impressive octagon performance to date against [autotag]Josh Parisian[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 51.

Buday (13-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) needed just a matter of minutes to hurt Parisian (15-7 MMA, 2-4 UFC) on the feet and force his opponent into a takedown attempt at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. He countered, took top control and locked in a tight kimura for the verbal submission at the 4:11 mark of Round 1.

Check out the replay of the final sequence below (via Twitter):

With 12 consecutive victories overall, Buday’s assent continued. His four-fight UFC winning streak in the heavyweight division trailed only Sergei Pavlovich (six), and Buday said he’s pleased to get the job done quickly after fighting to a decision in his past two outings.

“It’s the best feeling,” Buday said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I wanted to deliver a finish, and now it happened. I’m very happy.”

UFC heavyweight Josh Parisian unexpectedly lost a fight this week, but it didn’t take long for him to get a new one.

UFC heavyweight [autotag]Josh Parisian[/autotag] unexpectedly lost a fight this week, but it didn’t take long for him to get a new one.

Parisian is set to meet [autotag]Martin Buday[/autotag] at a UFC Fight Night event Aug. 12 at the UFC Apex. Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the booking Friday but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Parisian (15-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC) had been scheduled to fight Walt Harris on Saturday at UFC on ESPN 49, but the fight was unexpectedly canceled after Harris was removed because of a flagged drug test by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Parisian, 34, entered the UFC after an appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2020. Since then, he’s alternated losses and wins, with his most recent Feb. 18 fight a unanimous decision defeat to Jamal Pogues.

Buday (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC), also a Contender Series alum, is on an 11-fight overall winning streak and hasn’t tasted defeat since 2018. He’s won three decisions since joining the UFC, including most recently a unanimous victory over Jake Collier on April 29.

With the addition, here’s the UFC Fight Night lineup on Aug. 12:

  • Vicente Luque vs. Rafael dos Anjos
  • Juliana Miller vs. Luana Santos
  • JP Buys vs. Marcus McGhee
  • AJ Dobson vs. Tafon Nchukwi

Walt Harris owns up to USADA issue after cancellation of UFC on ESPN 49 fight

Three days before UFC on ESPN 49, its only heavyweight bout was removed from the lineup.

The lone heavyweight bout scheduled for UFC on ESPN 49 is no longer happening.

On Wednesday, [autotag]Walt Harris[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Josh Parisian[/autotag] was removed from Saturday’s card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the news to MMA Junkie after an initial report by MMA Fighting. Shortly after news surfaced of his bout’s removal, Harris (13-10 MMA, 6-9 UFC) revealed on Instagram a USADA-related issue caused the cancellation.

“I believe this came from a supplement that I’ve trusted my entire career, but at the end of the day it was never USADA approved. I’m a complete idiot for not checking prior, but I’m definitely not a cheater. I sincerely want to apologize to my opponent Josh Parisian.”

See Harris’ full statement below.

The bout was expected to be the first for Harris since June 2021. He aimed to snap a three-fight skid, which included defeats to Alistair Overeem, Alexander Volkov, and Marcin Tybura.

Parisian (15-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC) has alternated losses and wins since his UFC debut in November 2020. He most recently competed in February when he lost a unanimous decision to Jamal Pogues.

With the removal, the UFC on ESPN 49 lineup now includes:
