‘Gutted’ Tresean Gore out of UFC 298 due to shoulder injury

The UFC’s February pay-per-view in Anaheim is down a man as Tresean Gore is out vs. AJ Dobson.

UFC 298 has an unexpected opening.

“TUF 29” middleweight runner up [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] is out due to a shoulder injury, he revealed in a series of Instagram stories Wednesday.

One of the stories featured Dr. John Tokish, of the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, who explained Gore’s injuries, which include a labral tear, paralabral cyst, and likely Grade 2 AC joint separation.

“I don’t think he’s going to be ready in 12 days to be able to protect himself,” Tokish said.

Gore (4-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) was expected to fight [autotag]AJ Dobson[/autotag] (7-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on the Feb. 17 preliminary card at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

“Gutted posting this, but the UFC didn’t clear me to fight. I initially was gonna fight anyway, but my Coach made me (get) a MRI because he didn’t want me fighting with one Arm!” Gore wrote. “Man I don’t understand why some things happen, but it’s all on God’s time not mine! I will be back and when the time is Right, I will be P4P. I can’t allow injury’s to kill my dream!”

It’s unclear if Dobson will remain on the card, although he teased fight news Wednesday on Instagram.

With the change, the UFC 298 fight card includes:

  • Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Merab Dvalishvili

Bo Nickal in need of new UFC 290 opponent after Tresean Gore injury withdrawal

Bo Nickal’s status for UFC 290 suddenly is in jeopardy through no fault of his own.

(Editor’s note: Three hours after this story published, Bo Nickal secured a new opponent for UFC 290. You can read all about it here.)

[autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag]’s status for UFC 290 suddenly is in jeopardy through no fault of his own.

With only five days until Saturday’s pay-per-view event, Nickal’s opponent, [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag], has withdrawn from their scheduled main-card fight because of a wrist injury. Gore (4-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) made the announcement Tuesday morning on his Instagram stories. According to Ariel Helwani, the UFC is working on finding a last-minute replacement for Nickal and hopes to finalize a new bout before today is over.

Nickal (4-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), 27, made his promotional debut in March at UFC 285, where he defeated Jamie Pickett in the first round with a triangle choke. The win didn’t come without controversy as Pickett and his team initially sought to appeal the result due to a potential low blow that occurred before the finishing sequence. However, the result of the fight was upheld after the appeal fell through.

Nickal, a three-time NCAA Division I national champion wrestler out of Penn State, has won all four of his professional MMA bouts in the first round. That includes two buzzworthy Dana White’s Contender Series appearances last year, which took place just seven weeks apart.

Gore, who participated in “The Ultimate Fighter 29,” had been set to compete for the first time in 2023. Gore said his wrist injury could require surgery that would keep him out of action for six months to a year.

In his last appearance, Gore picked up his first UFC win by submitting Josh Fremd in the second round with a guillotine choke.

Dan Hardy: Tresean Gore matchup designed for ‘Bo Nickal to pick up another win’

Dan Hardy sees Tresean Gore as a tailor-made matchup for Bo Nickal.

[autotag]Dan Hardy[/autotag] sees [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] as a tailor-made matchup for [autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag].

Nickal (4-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets Gore (4-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC 290 pay-per-view main card opener at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC/ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

Standout wrestler Nickal is one of the most highly touted prospects in the sport, but Hardy thinks the UFC has been giving him favorable matchups.

“I kind of feel like this one’s been matched for Bo Nickal to pick up another win,” Hardy said on his YouTube channel. “I mean, 4-0 against 4-2. I’m very excited for Bo Nickal, but it’s like, sometimes I feel like fighters join the UFC a little bit too soon, and then you can kind of tell that they’re curating their career too much, if that makes sense.”

Nickal has finished all four of his professional fights in less than a round, and Hardy expects another quick finish for the three-time NCAA Division-I national wrestling champion.

“I’m kind of expecting Bo Nickal to make the most of the pressure that Tresean Gore’s going to probably put him under,” Hardy said. “It makes no sense for Tresean Gore to back up and give him any space because then he’s going to get pushed around and Bo Nickal is going to set up his level change.

“Ultimately, I just think this fight’s going to be on the floor within a minute, and Bo Nickal is probably going to be able to beat him up from top position to soften him up and then attack some kind of neck attack, anaconda, arm triangle, rear-naked choke, et cetera, et cetera.”

Bo Nickal expects to have his way with Tresean Gore at UFC 290

Bo Nickal is uber-confident about how his second UFC fight will play out in his favor.

[autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag] has no doubt that he will take [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] to his world at UFC 290.

Nickal (4-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets Gore (4-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on the pay-per-view main card opener July 8 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Nickal has lived up to his potential so far with two quick submissions on Dana White’s Contender Series, followed by a successful UFC debut against Jamie Pickett. The three-time Division I national wrestling champion expects to have no issues getting Gore to the mat, too.

“He probably obviously hopes to keep it standing, hopes to be able to stay on his feet and kind of play to his strengths,” Nickal said in an interview with Karyn Bryant. “But the way I see it, I don’t really feel like there’s any way he could stop me from taking him down. Even if he defends one, I’m still just gonna keep coming at him. I’m ready to go for 15 minutes. But realistically I think that I’ll get him on the ground, whether I knock him down or whether I take him down.

“Once I get him on the ground once, he’s not getting back up. That’s for certain. I not only can hold these MMA guys down, I can hold the best wrestlers in the world down – guys that have been wrestling their whole life, 20-plus years. That’s what I did in college. That’s what I still can do to this day. So, I don’t know how a guy that’s gonna train wrestling for eight weeks or kind of part-time train wrestling in the MMA sense, I don’t know what he’s going to be able to do to stop me.”

[lawrence-related id=2622775,2622627,2622530]

All four of Nickal’s professional wins have come in the first round, and he sees things going in similar fashion against Gore. A participant on “The Ultimate Fighter 29,” Gore picked up his first octagon win when he submitted Josh Fremd with a guillotine choke last October.

“I don’t like to guess exact predictions for the fight because I’m ready to adjust and change plan and fight however I need to win and get the finish,” Nickal said. “But if I have to do a prediction, I think that I’ll probably get him on the ground first round and either TKO him or sub him.”

Bo Nickal gets next assignment, will face Tresean Gore at UFC 290 in Las Vegas

Bo Nickal’s second appearance of 2023 will take place at UFC 290 in Las Vegas.

Highly-touted prospect [autotag]Bo Nickal[/autotag] is set to step into the cage for the second time in 2023.

On July 8, Nickal (4-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will meet [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] at UFC 290. The pay-per-view event takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and features a featherweight title unification bout between champ Alexander Volkanovski and interim champ Yair Rodriguez.

Nickal made his promotional debut at UFC 285, where he defeated Jamie Pickett in the first round with a triangle choke. With the addition, the UFC 290 lineup includes:
