Jack Della Maddalena reveals he was battling staph infection heading into UFC 299

Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) broke his arm in the first round of his come-from-behind finish of Gilbert Burns at UFC 299 in Miami.

But that’s not the only thing the 27-year-old Aussie had to overcome.

“I had staph just heading into, just before we left,” Della Maddalena revealed on The Grin Reapers Podcast. “It was Wednesday the week before fight week, I was on antibiotics. I think it was like, really sore the weekend before.

“It had gotten quite a lot better, so I was thinking, ‘The antibiotics are obviously working.’ It was just like a little pimple on my knee. My knee swelled up. It was just painful. I just didn’t really train. Just chilled for the first four days we were there (in Miami).”

His coach Ben Vickers chimed in, saying Della Maddalena even had a hard time getting on his flight to Miami.

“Let’s be honest: You limped on to the plane with staph,” Vickers said. “He limped on to the plane on antibiotics the Wednesday before fight week. We’ve got guys pulling out of fights two weeks out with staph. Jack was never going to pull out. But unfortunately, we lost a week of training.”

After notching his seventh octagon win over former title challenger Burns, Della Maddalena wants undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov next.

“I reckon I could spark him and then get the title shot,” Jack Della Maddalena said of Shavkat Rakhmonov.

Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) called out Rakhmonov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) after knocking out former title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 299. Rakhmonov is undefeated with a 100 percent finish rate, so Della Maddalena thinks stopping him should undeniably lead to a title shot.

“I think I finish him,” Della Maddalena told ESPN. “I think I go in there and shock the world. A lot of people count me out, but I reckon I could spark him and then get the title shot.”

Della Maddalena hopes the UFC is on board. Rakhmonov appears to be, after he sent Della Maddalena a stern warning on “X.”

“Great, he’s perfect,” Della Maddalena said of Rakhmonov’s response. “I feel like he’s like a James Bond villain, so I’m happy to be James Bond, and I thought that was the perfect response from him. I don’t know how this thing works, but I think it’s on.”

Della Maddalena broke his arm in the first round of his fight against Burns. He sees late summer as a good time for him and Rakhmonov to fight.

“I’ve seen that he wanted to fight early August,” Della Maddalena said. “He’s carrying an injury, I’m carrying an injury, I reckon I’m good to go early August, so August sometime. Mid-August, maybe down this side of the world. Who knows?”

Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 299 took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $359,000.

MIAMI – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 299 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $359,000.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC 299 took place at Kaseya Center. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $42,000 while title challengers get $32,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

UFC 299 results: Jack Della Maddalena KOs Gilbert Burns after vicious knee, calls out Shavkat Rakhmonov

Jack Della Maddalena scored a third-round KO of Gilbert Burns at UFC 299, and then called out undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov.

[autotag]Jack Della Maddalena[/autotag] proved he could overcome a top dog of the division in Gilbert Burns, but it wasn’t an easy task.

On the main card of UFC 299, Della Maddalena (17-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) was down to Burns (22-7 MMA, 15-7 UFC) on two of the judges’ scorecards going into the final round. However, Della Maddalena found a way to evade the judges by knocking out Burns at 3:43 of Round 3.

The welterweight bout was part of the main card at Kaseya Center in Miami.

Burns attacked with kicks to the legs and the body early as the crowd chanted his name. Della Maddalena stayed calm, but soon found himself on the mat with Burns on his back after a quick takedown. Nothing would come of the sequence on the ground, and Della Maddalena would land a nice knee on the exit from the clinch after the fight returned to standing.

Della Maddalena looked to land punches in the exchanges that followed, but Burns closed out the round with a solid takedown and a few punches on the canvas.

A patient striking approach continued for Della Maddalena in Round 2, until Burns completed another well-timed takedown. The fight quickly returned to the feet again, and Della Maddalena continued to press forward. Burns cracked with a clean short elbow, but did little to stop Della Maddalena from moving forward.

Della Maddalena blitzed forward with a combination, putting Burns on the defensive. However, a few moments later, Burns smashed with a big overhand right and then scored another takedown.

Between rounds, Della Maddalena’s corner called for urgency as they acknowledged Burns won Round 2. He answered the call by landing hard punches early in Round 3, prompting Burns to cover up and then shoot for a takedown. Burns eventually got Della Maddalena down and took the back.

Della Maddalena rolled out of the hold and smashed Burns with a crushing knee as he got to his feet. Follow up elbows and hammerfists led to the stoppage a few seconds later.

 

After picking up the biggest win of his career thus far, Della Maddalena called for a No. 1 contender fight against the highly-touted undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov.

“There’s some scary people in this division, and I’m the f*cking scariest,” Della Maddalena said during his post-fight interview. “Shavkat Rakhmonov, I think me and you could make a hell of a title eliminator. One of the best in the business, let’s go!”

MIAMI – Will [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] arrive in style, or will [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] spoil the party?
