Former opponent Felicia Spencer thinks Amanda Nunes beats Julianna Pena 8 of 10 times

When Julianna Pena submitted Amanda Nunes in December, it was considered arguably the biggest title upset in UFC history.

When [autotag]Julianna Pena[/autotag] submitted [autotag]Amanda Nunes[/autotag] in December, it was considered arguably the biggest title upset in UFC history.

Given Nunes’ (21-5 MMA, 14-2 UFC) status as who many considered the greatest women’s fighter in history, and the fact she held two belts when she lost the 135-pound title to Pena, a rematch is a strong likelihood with new champ Pena (11-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC).

In fact, UFC president Dana White said he thinks a rematch “will probably be the biggest women’s fight of all time.”

[autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag], who recently announced her MMA retirement, knows a few things about Nunes. She went five rounds with her in a title fight at UFC 250, and though she didn’t win any rounds against her, she learned enough to know upsets always are possible.

“I always know there’s a chance for the underdogs to win,” Spencer told MMA Junkie. “I’ve been in that position so many times, and I was 100 percent confident that I could pull it off. It just takes a few mistakes in a fight, or one mistake, for that to happen.

“Did I expect it to happen, personally? I wasn’t betting on it, no. But I feel like Julianna had the moment where she could capitalize on a mistake of Amanda’s. Amanda reacts certain ways when she gets hit, and it’s a trend there. We’ve seen her get rocked in certain ways and then make more bad decisions. So Julianna did a good job making that happen in the fight.”

If – or perhaps when – that rematch gets booked, Spencer said she’d put her money on Nunes. And she said she’d do so an overwhelming amount of the time.

“I would lean Amanda because I feel like for so many fights, she was able to avoid making a mistake like that,” Spencer said. “I feel like she’d be able to be in a mindset to do it again – to have a sort of flawless performance, if you want to call it that. But again, anything can happen in that cage.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if she lost (again), but if I had to lean one way, I’d lean on Amanda eight out of 10 times.”

Former UFC title challenger Felicia Spencer announces retirement from MMA

Despite a dominant win in November, Felicia Spencer has “no intention” to continue her fighting career, citing her mental health.

Former UFC women’s featherweight title challenger [autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag] has announced her retirement.

On Thursday, Spencer (9-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) revealed the news in an interview with Fight Bananas in which she cited her mental health as the main reason for stepping away from the sport.

“I have decided to stop pursuing this opportunity and have no intention to continue fighting,” Spencer said. “I felt as good as I’ve ever been in my last fight and know I could have more great performances. But after 18 fights, including a few wars, I know in my heart for my future mental health that I shouldn’t be in more of those wars. In the fight game, that isn’t guaranteed, and I’ve shown myself that I won’t give up in the cage, so I need to protect myself by just not stepping in there. I’m thinking about myself and family 25 years from now. Mental health is an important consideration in my family.”

A veteran of 12 professional MMA bouts, Spencer’s pro career began under the Invicta FC banner in 2015. Six wins later, she claimed the promotion’s featherweight title when she submitted Pam Sorenson by fourth-round rear-naked choke.

In March 2019, Spencer signed with the UFC. She submitted Megan Anderson by first-round submission, which set up a fight against Cris Cyborg. At UFC 240 four months later, Spencer vs. Cyborg served as the pay-per-view co-main event. Cyborg defeated Spencer via unanimous decision.

Following a TKO victory over Zarah Fairn in her next fight, Spencer was booked against women’s featherweight champion Amanda Nunes. While Spencer lost a unanimous decision, she became only the third woman to go 25 minutes with Nunes.

Spencer, 31, was one of the only members of the UFC women’s featherweight division prior to her announced retirement. She competed as recently as Nov. 13, bouncing back from a May loss to Norma Dumont and dominating Leah Letson en route to a third-round TKO stoppage.

UFC Fight Night 197 video: Felicia Spencer TKOs Leah Letson with brutal ground and pound

Felicia Spencer dominated on the canvas at UFC Fight Night 197 on Saturday.

Former UFC featherweight title challenger [autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag] made a statement on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 197.

Facing Leah Letson on the main card, Spencer (9-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) sought to snap a recent losing skid, and was more than successful in doing so. Throughout the contest, Spencer proved too strong in the clinch and dominated the bout whenever it hit the mat.

In the third round, Spencer was able to put the finishing touches on Letson (5-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) as she rained down hard elbows from top position, forcing referee Mark Smith to call a stop to the action.

Check out the video of the finish below (via Twitter):

Spencer returned to the win column in dominant fashion, snapping a two-fight skid. In 2020, she earned a crack at the champ Amanda Nunes but came up short on the judges’ scorecards. Earlier this year, she dropped a close split decision to Norma Dumont, but rebounded nicely to pick up her third finish under the UFC banner.

Up-to-the-minute results of UFC Fight Night 197 include:

  • Felicia Spencer def. Leah Letson via TKO (punches) – Round 3, 4:25
  • Khaos Williams def. Miguel Baeza via TKO (punches) – Round 3, 1:02
  • Song Yadong def. Julio Arce via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 1:35
  • Joel Alvarez def. Thiago Moises via TKO (elbows, punches) – Round 1, 3:01
  • Andrea Lee def. Cynthia Calvillo via TKO (corner stoppage) – Round 2, 5:00
  • Sean Woodson def. Collin Anglin via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 4:30
  • Cortney Casey def. Liana Jojua via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Rafael Alves def. Marc Diakiese via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 1, 1:48
  • Da Un Jung def. Kennedy Nzechukwu via knockout (elbows) – Round 1, 3:04

UFC Fight Night 197: Felicia Spencer vs. Leah Letson odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 197 odds and lines between Felicia Spencer vs. Leah Letson, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a women’s featherweight bout on the main card, Felicia Spencer meets Leah Letson Saturday at UFC Fight Night 197 – also known as UFC Vegas 42. Below, we analyze the UFC Fight Night 197 Spencer vs. Letson odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims at 1 p.m. ET and the main card at 4 p.m. ET.

Spencer, a.k.a. “FeeNom”, dropped each of her last two fights, including a tight bout at UFC 250 against Amanda Nunes in June 2020. She also was dropped via split-decision against Norma Dumont her last time out in May. Three of her last four fights have resulted in losses at the hands of the judges and she is just 2-3 since arriving at the UFC level.

Letson will be making her UFC debut. She posted a split-decision win over Julija Stoliarenko at The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale Nov. 30, 2018. She has had a long layoff due to serious health issues, including digestive and thyroid issues, but has been cleared to resume her career.

UFC Fight Night 197 Spencer vs. Letson: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Spencer (8-3-0) | Letson (5-2-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Spencer (-340) will cost you over three times your potential return, and that’s still too risky despite the fact Letson hasn’t taken the walk to the octagon in nearly three full calendar years.

I am feeling SPENCER BY SUBMISSION (+255) as the play in this one. She has won four times by way of submission in 11 professional fights, and Letson hasn’t fought in three years. If she goes down to the canvas, how good will her defenses be after such a long hiatus?

Over/Under (O/U)

NO (+150): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE is a solid value at plus money. Letson will be hard-pressed to last the whole time in the octagon in her first fight since late 2018. As mentioned above, I like Spencer to tap her out so UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (+165) is also worth a look.

The UFC is back home in Las Vegas this week with a former champion at the top of the lineup.

UFC Fight Night 197 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former featherweight champion [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Yair Rodriguez[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC), who is fighting for the first time in more than two years. Holloway is a huge -800 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Rodriguez is +470. Given those odds, it’s not surprising that not a single one of our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers is picking against Holloway.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] (18-7-1 MMA, 7-5 UFC) meets [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] (39-13 MMA, 9-7 UFC) at heavyweight. And though Rothwell only is a -165 favorite, he’s got the support of 11 of our 13 staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Leah Letson[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on former Invicta champion and former UFC women’s featherweight title challenger [autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag] (8-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC). Spencer is a big -320 favorite, and she’s our other unanimous pick.

[autotag]Miguel Baeza[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) may be just a -150 favorite at welterweight against [autotag]Khaos Williams[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), but he’s got a near-unanimous picks lead at 12-1.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] (17-5-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) is a slim -140 favorite at featherweight against [autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC). Yadong has most of our backing – he’s an 11-2 pick.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Holloway (88 percent), Rothwell (72 percent), Spencer (86 percent), Baeza (51 percent) and Yadong (81 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Felicia Spencer ‘in the right place’ to stop skid at UFC Fight Night 197

Felicia Spencer had made the correct mental adjustments going into her UFC Fight Night 197 matchup with Leah Letson.

[autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag] has made the correct mental adjustments after back-to-back losses and intends to right the ship going into UFC Fight Night 197 on Saturday.

Spencer (8-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) has everything she could’ve wanted in the sport two fights ago when she challenged Amanda Nunes for the women’s featherweight title in June 2020. She put on an admirable showing in a unanimous decision loss, but instead of that outcome serving as a lifter, she would go on to lose a split decision to Norma Dumont in May.

The second consecutive defeat pushed Spencer into uncharted waters in her career, but she said she made the correct fixes in the gym and in her mind and is now prepared to turn things around against Leah Letson (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

“I feel like this fight I mentally kind of got in the right place,” Spencer told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 197 media day. “I’m training and fighting more for myself in this camp and excited for myself to have a great performance. It didn’t feel this way last time. I wasn’t going through the emotions, but kind of excited for it to be over. But this time I’m genuinely excited for Saturday day.”

The matchup between Spencer, 30, and Letson, 29, takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+. Spencer said she hopes to stop the fight inside the distance.

“I’m fully confident I’m going to win first or second round,” Spencer said.

With Danyelle Wolf out, Felicia Spencer meets Norma Dumont at UFC Fight Night 188

Former women’s featherweight title challenger Felicia Spencer has a new opponent later this month.

[autotag]Danyelle Wolf[/autotag] (1-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was set to make her UFC debut against Spencer (8-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 188. But with Wolf out, Spencer instead will take on [autotag]Norma Dumont[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC). UFC officials announced the change Thursday.

Spencer, a former Invicta FC featherweight champion, fell short in her pursuit of UFC gold when she lost a unanimous decision to two-division champion Amanda Nunes in June 2020. The Canadian has split her four octagon appearances, including finishes of Megan Anderson and Zarah Fairn Dos Santos.
