George Pickens goes full Marshawn Lynch with media on Friday

George Pickens says he’s only talking to the media so he doesn’t get fined.

The fact there is now even more drama surrounding a Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver should come as no surprise. The Steelers have had their share of malcontents at the position over the years from guys like Antonio Brown and Chase Claypool and now you can add George Pickens to the list.

Pickens has had his share of on and off-field issues during his tenure in Pittsburgh and his latest go-round has him going full Marshawn Lynch when he spoke to the media on Friday. Pickens was asked about the comments from Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome calling Pickens a fake tough guy after their scrum on Thursday night after practice on Friday night and he went full Marshawn Lynch with his reply.

I know fans will find this funny because many consider Lynch such a likable guy but there’s nothing good about this for a team battling for a conference crown.

NFL investigation could cost George Pickens

The league will look into the final play of the Steelers loss to the Browns to see if there should be any punishment on George Pickens.

According to Cleveland Browns writer Mary Kay Cabot, the NFL is going to be investigating a fight at the end of the Pittsburgh 24-19 loss to the Browns on Thursday night. The fight happened between Steelers wide receiver George Pickens and Browns cornerback Greg Newsome at the end of the game.

“The NFL will review George Pickens instigating a fight with Browns cornerback Greg Newsome after the Hail Mary at the end of the Browns’ 24-19 upset of the Steelers, and a fine could be coming,” Cabot said.

After watching the play more times than I care to admit, I’m not at all convinced Pickens was the instigator of the scrum. It looks like Newsome is basically riding Pickens down the field the last 10 yards as the two are locked up and Pickens takes the offensive once the two are at the back of the end zone.

This in no way condones Pickens’ behavior on the play but we cannot rule out Newsome’s involvement. The problem is Pickens has become a problem and is on the NFL’s radar. The league could review his attempt to trip Cleveland safety Grant Delpit after a play and fine him for that move as well.

Saints get the player we wanted all along in 2021 re-draft

The Saints got the player we wanted all along in this 2021 re-draft, but would Greg Newsome II have been a better pick than Paulson Adebo?

It’s no secret that the New Orleans Saints botched the start of their 2021 NFL draft. They opened the event by drafting defensive end Payton Turner, a surprise pick who many experts didn’t see going off the board so early. And Turner’s career to this point has mostly been frustrating.

The 33rd Team’s Marcus Mosher has the Saints moving differently. Going into  the draft, cornerback was an obvious priority for the Saints. But when top targets like Caleb Farley and Greg Newsome II were taken ahead of them, the Saints chose to go in a different direction, selecting defensive end Payton Turner ahead of Georgia corners Eric Stokes and Tyson Campbell, who were both taken in the next five picks.

Using the benefit of hindsight, Mosher redid 2021’s first round, and in his do-over he has Newsome falling to New Orleans. He was the cornerback we wanted all along, having traded up to get him in our final Saints mock draft. Here’s Mosher’s take on why Newsome would be a great fit:

Marshon Lattimore has struggled to stay on the field during the last few years, and the New Orleans Saints have a weakness at cornerback.

Greg Newsome would help fix that need, giving them a cornerback who can play in the slot and on the outside. He falls here due to some injury concerns, as he’s missed at least two games each season. Still, this is a massive value for the Saints at No. 28.

Injuries have limited Newsome to appearing in 42 of the Browns’ 52 games since he was drafted (starting 39 of them, including the playoffs), and he’s intercepted just two passes in his NFL career without forcing or recovering a fumble. So it’s a little wild to see him still being drafted in the first round when Paulson Adebo, who the Saints picked in Round 3, has started 44 of 45 games while intercepting seven passes with two forced fumbles and as many recoveries. Adebo has broken up 33 passes compared to Newsome’s 30.

We should acknowledge that takeaways aren’t everything, and Adebo has drawn three times as many penalties for defensive passing interference or holding (21) as Newsome (7). NFL teams liked Newsome enough to draft him 50 spots higher than Adebo back in 2021, so they clearly saw something special. Either way, the Saints picking him here would have addressed their most important need at the time.

As for Turner? He wasn’t picked at all in this draft do-over, but the pick was a reach when the Saints called it in even at the time. The Saints rightly saw a run coming at the position but they picked the wrong player. All three of the pass rushers drafted after him have bagged at least 13 sacks while playing in at least 45 games. Turner has only suited up for 15 games while recording just 3 sacks through three years, and one of those came against Derek Carr when he still played for the Raiders. It’s a shame they can’t get a real-life do-over, but hopefully Turner finds his way from here while the players the Saints drafted after him find more success.

Potential Lions trade target: Browns CB Greg Newsome II

The Cleveland Browns have an abundance of outside CBs, and one might be available in a trade. Could the Lions make a move?

The Cleveland Browns have a strange surplus of starting cornerbacks. Their abundance could be a potential solution for the Detroit Lions and their stark lack of overall talent and depth at outside corner.

The Browns could be looking to move one of their trio of starting-caliber cornerbacks. Writing for The Washington Post, Jason La Canfora noted:

“Multiple GMs said the Cleveland Browns made it clear they are open to dealing one of their top cornerbacks as they try to balance salaries after years of heavy spending.”

The Browns have three premium CBs: Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson and Greg Newsome II. All three are outside cornerbacks by nature. The one to focus on for potential Lions trade purposes is Newsome, who is entering his fourth season and due a new contract after the year if the Browns choose not to exercise his fifth-year option.

This was a popular discussion point at the NFL Scouting Combine, with Newsome the most likely candidate to bring back anything worthwhile in return for Cleveland. The 2021 first-rounder from Northwestern has been forced to play inside in the slot and has struggled compared to how well he performed earlier in his career while aligning outside. He’s not exactly endeared himself to the Browns fan base either.

If the Lions are interested, it goes beyond simply trading a draft pick or two to the Browns to acquire the 23-year-old Newsome. Detroit would also need to sign him to a new contract. Those salary negotiations would figure to begin at the fifth-year option value of $13.37 million as a base price per year.

Hypothetical deal

The Lions send No. 73 overall in the 2024 NFL draft and a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Browns for Newsome.

Detroit signs Newsome to a three-year, $41.5 million contract with $22.5 million guaranteed. That figure is above what Over The Cap currently projects as Newsome’s value but is commensurate with the rate for a starting outside cornerback in free agency.

Browns Injury Report: Breaking down the final injury report before Bengals game

Let’s dive into the final injury report of this Week 18 matchup that has absolutely zero implications.

With one day until the Cleveland Browns take on the Cincinnati Bengals, they will do so without many key players. Those players include Defensive Player of the Year favorite Myles Garrett, wide receiver Amari Cooper, and kicker Dustin Hopkins.

Quarterback Joe Flacco is also not going to play in this game as head coach Kevin Stefanski has also opted to rest other starters. Jeff Driskel, signed off of the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad last week, will start against this former team.

Sitting at 11-5 on the season, the Browns will become the first team to start five different quarterbacks in the same season in 35 years. Can they find a way to scratch and claw to a 12th win on the season for the first time since 1948?

With just one day until gameday, here is every Browns player who was either limited or did not practice on Friday. Included is every player with a gameday injury designation as well.

Browns miss PAT after getting pick-six to close within 1 point of Ravens

The Browns had a pick-six and then missed a PAT

Talk about a nightmare.

The Cleveland Browns were chasing the Baltimore Ravens all day Sunday in an AFC South clash.

And they got a pick-six in the fourth quarter from Greg Newsome to close within 31-30.

The PAT would knot the game, right?

Wrong.

Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point and the Browns still trailed.

Browns Injury Report: Dawand Jones questionable, Greg Newsome out vs. Cardinals

And the last injury report of the week…

The Cleveland Browns started the week with a laundry list of injuries, but now enter their Week 9 game against the Arizona Cardinals in rather good health. The big news is quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was not given an injury designation and has been named the starting quarterback as the Browns return home to take on the 1-7 Cardinals. However, in some not-so-good news, cornerback Greg Newsome was ruled out and offensive tackle Dawand Jones has been listed as questionable.

Newsome will not be the only player to miss, but the only starter that will not suit up. This has become a theme throughout his collegiate and NFL career. His Northwestern colleague Cameron Mitchell will get the reps in the nickel in his absence.

Here is the full injury report of every player who was limited in practice or missed practice on Friday as the Browns get set to take on the Cardinals.

PFF’s 10 highest-graded Browns’ defensive players vs. Ravens

It wasn’t the best day for the defense

It wasn’t the best day for the defense of the Cleveland Browns, who made plenty of plays but overall got worn down and struggled to make tackles. The team missed 11 tackles in total according to PFF after tackling had been a strong point in the first three games of the year. Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst provided the only takeaway in this one.

The Ravens were by far the best offense Cleveland has seen and it showed as they were able to run the ball at will against the team. There are some areas to clean up during the bye knowing that Kyle Shannahan and the 49ers offense is awaiting in two weeks.

The team was still able to generate a solid pass rush as the defensive line remained a strength of the team. It was an up-and-down game for the secondary as the Ravens’ offensive scheme was perfect to attack the Browns. Here are the top 10 highest-graded defenders for the Browns against the Ravens according to PFF.
