NBA weekly awards: Jarrett Allen, Gary Payton II and more

It’s time for the second edition of our NBA weekly awards series, where we pick a winner for every top accolade, from weekly MVP to Coach of the Week.

This week has a very Cleveland Cavaliers flavor to it, as two young Cavs frontcourt players made their way onto our ranking.

Without further ado, let’s jump right in.

Warriors Report Card: Player grades from the Warriors’ win over the Houston Rockets

Here are some player grades from the Golden State Warrior’s 120-107 win over the Houston Rockets.

The Golden State Warriors look like legitimate title contenders this season. They have the best record in the NBA following a 120-107 win over the Houston Rockets. They have scored the second-most points per game (113.9) and allowed the second-fewest (100.2). Head coach Steve Kerr’s squad has been feasting on the back of dizzying ball movement and throttling defense.

The Warriors left the Chase Center with another win Sunday despite running into some foul trouble in the first half. It was an offensive back-and-forth for much of the first half, but a 20-2 Warriors run in the third quarter sealed the victory. Guards Jordan Poole and Steph Curry led the way in scoring, with 45 combined points. Forward Otto Porter Jr. flashed his smooth shooting once again to chip in off the bench as well.

The Rockets were the first team to shoot better than 30% from three-point range in a game since Oct. 26 when the Oklahoma City Thunder hit 35% of their looks from deep. The Warriors have played five games since then, winning all but one – an overtime loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Warriors put up a solid shooting night, hitting 51.8% from the floor and 32.6% from deep. It was the ball movement that stole the show, though, as they assisted 31 baskets as a team Sunday.

Here are some player grades from the win.

Warriors Report Card: Player grades for Golden State Warriors’ win over Charlotte Hornets

Player grades from the Golden State Warriors 114-92 win over the Charlotte Hornets Wednesday night.

The Golden State Warriors flexed their defensive muscles in the second half against the Charlotte Hornets en route to a 114-92 win at the Chase Center. Despite an underwhelming performance from the usually-dominant Steph Curry, the Warriors got production from other parts of their roster to stave off a 32-point night from Miles Bridges.

The Warriors are now 6-1 on the season thanks to inspired performances from guards Jordan Poole and Gary Payton II. Each guard essentially took over a quarter during the game, propelling the Warriors to victory. Payton led the Golden State defense in the second half, stifling LaMelo Ball for multiple possessions. Golden State held the Hornets without a field goal for nine minutes at one point in the third quarter, according to the ESPN broadcast.

Not only did they defend, but the Warriors also hit their shots for the most part. They were 48.8% from the floor and 40% from three-point range Wednesday. They held the Hornets to just 27.8% from deep and allowed just nine bench points on the night.

They also moved the ball well, surpassing that 30 assist benchmark once again. They did struggle with turnovers early in the game but cleaned it up as the game moved on.

The 22-point win is their largest of the young season so far, narrowly edging out Saturday’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Here are some player grades from the win.

Warriors sign guard Gary Payton II to fill final roster spot

After initially waiving him at the end of the preseason, the Warriors have agreed to a contract with Gary Payton II to fill their final roster spot.

At the end of the preseason, the Golden State Warriors waived a group of players, including Gary Payton II. During training camp, Payton II was in competition with players like Avery Bradley for Golden State’s final roster spot.

Prior to the start of the regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Warriors made a move to bring back the 28-year-old guard. On Tuesday, the Warriors signed Payton to a contract, filling the 15th and final spot on the roster.

Payton II played in just one preseason game due to a hernia injury, scoring 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field with a rebound and a steal in only 13 minutes of action.

The Oregon State product joined Golden State for the final stretch of the regular season in 2020-21, playing in 10 games. During his late-season run, Payton II averaged 2.5 points on 76.9% shooting from the field in four minutes per contest.

Payton II will provide a consistent defensive-minded wing to Golden State’s thin backcourt to start the regular season.

Warriors waive Avery Bradley, Gary Payton II, Mychal Mulder and Jordan Bell, keep final roster spot open

After the preseason finale, the Warriors waived four players, keeping their final roster spot open.

After wrapping up the preseason with another win over the Portland Trail Blazers, the Golden State Warriors had to make some adjustments to their roster before the start of the regular season.

Following their 119-97 win over Portland, the Warriors waived four players. Golden State waived all four players in competition for their 15th roster spot, including veteran Avery Bradley and former Warriors Gary Payton II, Mychal Mulder and Jordan Bell.

Bradley was looked at as a favorite to land the final roster spot. However, the Warriors will now enter the regular season with some flexibility at the end of their roster.

In four preseason games, Bradley averaged 4.2 points on 38.9% shooting from the floor in 12.7 minutes per game. The 11-year-veteran will now become a free agent.

Payton II’s time in the preseason was limited to only one game due to a hernia injury. On Friday, the Oregon State product played 11 minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Payton II was ruled out against the Blazers on Tuesday with the same hernia injury.

After spending the 2020-21 season with the Warriors, Mulder could be a candidate to return to the Bay Area on a two-way deal. Chris Chiozza is currently the only player on Golden State’s roster on a two-way contract with the Santa Cruz Warriors. The Warriors currently have one open two-way slot for the 2020-21 season.

Jordan Bell played in four preseason games with the Warriors, averaging three points and 1.5 rebounds in 8.2 minutes.

Predicting every Warrior player’s rating in NBA 2K22

With “NBA 2K22” set to release in early September, Warriors Wire drops a rating prediction for every member of the Golden State Warriors.

The latest installment of the “NBA 2K” franchise is set to arrive Sept. 10, and Warriors fans can look forward to playing with a squad that looks remarkably similar to the glory years.

We already know that Stephen Curry, coming off a top-3 finish in MVP voting, is tied for the highest player rating in the game at 96. Draymond Green is still around, Klay Thompson will soon be back in action after two years of injury, and Andre Iguodala is a Warrior again.

But 2K’s all-important player ratings are bound to change for “NBA 2K22.” How will they judge Thompson after two years away? How can they quantify the value of a player like Green? Where do younger Dubs like James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody and Jordan Poole stand?

Here are rating predictions for every player on the roster (besides Curry) heading into the season.

LeBron James reacts to Gary Payton II’s ‘NASTY’ dunk in Summer League

After throwing down a “NASTY” dunk in a summer league contest against the Raptors, Warriors guard Gary Payton II caught the eye of LeBron James.

After dropping the opener in Sin City, the Golden State Warriors finally punched a victory in the Las Vegas Summer League with a win over the Toronto Raptors.

Although Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody impressed again on the way to combining for 32 points during Golden State’s 90-84 win over Toronto, it was Gary Payton II who stole the headlines during Wednesday’s contest.

While recording 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field with five assists, five rebounds and two steals, Payton II notched a highlight-reel dunk in the fourth quarter against the Raptors.

With time ticking away in the final period, the Oregon State product flew through the lane for an eye-popping one-handed tomahawk dunk. Along with most of the Thomas and Mack Center, Golden State’s bench erupted in celebration.

Payton II’s dunk even caught the eye of the Los Angels Lakers All-Star forward. Following Payton II’s dunk in the summer league, LeBron James chimed in on Twitter, calling the dunk “NASTY.”

Payton II and the Warriors will be back on the floor in Las Vegas on Friday at 4 p.m. against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
