Panthers waive 11 players on Saturday

The first wave of this weekend’s cutdown tsunami has crashed for the Panthers.

On Saturday, the Carolina Panthers began the trek towards their initial 53-man roster—waiving a total of 11 players.

Those players are as follows:

  • QB Jake Luton
  • RB Camerun Peoples
  • WR Gary Jennings
  • WR C.J. Saunders
  • OT Larnel Coleman
  • DT Antwuan Jackson
  • LB Bumper Pool
  • S Collin Duncan
  • S Josh Thomas
  • CB Rejzohn Wright
  • K Matthew Wright

The most notable name of the bunch is, perhaps, Luton. A former sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Luton completed eight of his 19 throws for 115 yards, a touchdown and an interception over two preseason outings.

But given the current state of Carolina’s quarterbacks room—with rookie Bryce Young as the starter, veteran Andy Dalton as the backup and Matt Corral barely holding on as the No. 3 option—the cut of Luton was not a surprise in the least.

He and the 10 other players who were waived by Carolina will now hit the waiver wire and can be claimed by another team on Wednesday. If they are not, they will become free agents and could return to the Panthers as part of their practice squad.

PFF hit Bryce Young with one of the Panthers’ lowest offensive grades from Friday night’s preseason loss to the Giants.

The Carolina Panthers may have dropped their second straight preseason contest to a New York squad on Friday night, but at least they kept the scorekeepers busy this time around. So, can we say the same about the graders over at Pro Football Focus?

Here are this week’s best and worst PFF marks for the Panthers:

The Carolina Panthers smelled what the XFL was cookin.’

As officially announced on Tuesday morning, the team has signed three players from the minor league football organization—all of whom were invited to rookie minicamp this past weekend. The trio includes defensive lineman Antwuan Jackson, wide receiver Gary Jennings and outside linebacker/tight end Jordan Thomas.

Jackson, who tweeted out his signing on Monday, attended Ohio State University from 2018 to 2021. He totaled 48 tackles and 3.5 sacks prior to his jump to the XFL.

Jennings has previous ties to general manager Scott Fitterer—who was in the front office for the Seattle Seahawks when they selected the West Virginia University product in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. The 6-foot-1, 219-pound pass catcher has played in one NFL game, which came later in that 2019 season with the Miami Dolphins.

Thomas, before his move to defense, was a part of five NFL franchises between 2018 and 2022. The 6-foot-5, 277-pounder reeled in 22 catches for 226 yards and five touchdowns over 27 games.

Carolina also announced the additions of three non-XFL players—offensive tackle BJ Wilson, wide receiver Marquez Stevenson and safety Vernon Scott.

Panthers invite another XFL WR to minicamp

St. Louis Battlehawks WR Gary Jennings is now the sixth XFL player to be invited to Panthers minicamp.

Boy, Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer wasn’t kidding when he said he’d look to the XFL in filling out his team’s minicamp roster, huh?

As announced on Wednesday night, the Panthers have extended an invite to St. Louis Battlehawks wide receiver Gary Jennings. He is the sixth player from the XFL who has garnered interest from Carolina—joining fellow wideout Austin Proehl, tight end Jordan Thomas, offensive tackle Derrick Kelly, center Dohnovan West and linebacker Ayinde Eley.

Jennings, not so coincidentally, has ties to Fitterer—who was in the front office for the Seattle Seahawks when they selected the West Virginia University product in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. The 6-foot-1, 219-pound pass catcher has appeared in just one NFL game, which came later in that 2019 campaign with the Miami Dolphins.

Following stops with five more teams—the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs—Jennings moved on to the XFL, where he was selected in the eighth round of their 2022 draft. He reeled in 11 receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns over eight games for the Battlehawks.

XFL: Former Seahawk Gary Jennings scores TD on fake punt in STL win

The Battlehawks win, thanks to a former Seahawks 2019 draft pick

Much to the dismay of the Seattle Sea Dragons, their division rivals the St. Louis Battlehawks prevailed once more… thanks, in part, to a former Seattle Seahawk draft pick.

In one of the more exciting comebacks of the XFL season, the Battlehawks outlasted the Las Vegas Vipers – who put up stiff resistance – by a score of 21-17 in two rounds of overtime. In the XFL, overtime is alternating 2-point conversion attempts. Each team gets at least three attempts, and St. Louis capitalized on their first two while Vegas did not.

However, it was a long process to even force overtime. Things did not look good for the Battlehawks, who trailed 17-8 with a little over five minutes left in the game. Facing a 4th-and-6, St. Louis dug deep in the playbook dialed up the right call.

The receiver who caught the pass was none other than former Seattle Seahawks draft pick Gary Jennings. Originally selected by the Seahawks in the 4th round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Jennings did not play for Seattle in a regular season game. He then bounced around the league from practice squad to practice squad, unable to find a permanent home.

Now, he is helping his XFL team win games. Unfortunately, at the expense of Seattle, who truly needs to win against the DC Defenders on Sunday evening.

Colts sign TE Graham Adomitis

Colts made a roster move before Sunday’s practice.

The Indianapolis Colts signed tight end Graham Adomitis and waived-injured wide receiver Gary Jennings, the team announced Sunday.

Injuries have hit the tight end room hard with Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson and Noah Togiai all missing multiple practices due to injuries. Adomitis was with the Colts during the team’s rookie minicamp in 2021 but didn’t sign.

In 37 career games at Princeton from 2015-2019, Adomitis recorded 37 receptions for 288 yards and six touchdowns.

Jennings signed a futures contract with the Colts back in January and was a fourth-round pick with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019.

Colts sign two more to futures contracts

Colts add two more futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Gary Jennings and running back Benny LeMay to reserve/futures contracts, the team announced Wednesday.

The Colts got their futures signings underway earlier this week with the addition of two other players. The futures contracts won’t count against the active roster until the day after the Super Bowl so the Colts can sign as many players to futures contracts as they like.

Once the offseason officially begins after the Super Bowl, though, the rosters will expand to the 90-man limit.

Jennings was a fourth-round pick with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. He has also spent time with the Miami Dolphins (2019), Baltimore Ravens (2020) and Buffalo Bills (2020).

LeMay signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie in 2020 and mostly spent time on the practice squad during his rookie season.

Bills have WR Gary Jennings in for free agent visit

Gary Jennings had free-agent visit with Buffalo Bills.

The Buffalo Bills had free agent wide receiver Gary Jennings in for a free agent visit on Tuesday, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Jennings was a fourth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks, only just in 2019. He didn’t make it to the end of his rookie season and he was cut in Nov. 2019 and claimed by the Miami Dolphins.

After quickly landing on injured reserve after being claimed by the Dolphins last year, he was cut at the end of training camp in 2020. The Seahawks have had a trend of missing on mid-round wide receiver draft picks until DK Metcalf bucked that trend.

In his career, Jennings has only appeared in one game, which occurred with the Dolphins. He never suited up with the Seahawks.

The Bills recently lost Jake Kumerow on their practice squad via the wavier system. The New Orleans Saints claimed him last week. Like Kumerow, Jennings, a West Virginia product, would probably have to contribute on special teams to find a way to the Bills’ roster, potentially in 2021.
