Panthers Week 7 injury report: Brady Christensen may start at LT

If Cameron Erving can’t go, the Panthers are prepared to give rookie Brady Christensen a much-anticipated start at LT.

Another week, another change on the offensive line for the Carolina Panthers? Possibly.

The broader contingent of the team faithful may be getting their wish again, as head coach Matt Rhule said on Friday that rookie Brady Christensen could be in line to start at left tackle for Week 7. Usual starter Cameron Erving, who was listed with a neck injury on Thursday, was absent today with an illness and is questionable for the matchup against the New York Giants.

Here’s the full report heading into the weekend:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
CB C.J. Henderson Shoulder Full Full Full
LB Frankie Luvu Biceps Limited Limited Full
WR Alex Erickson Concussion DNP Limited Limited Questionable
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Concussion DNP DNP DNP Out
LB Shaq Thompson Foot DNP DNP DNP Out
FB Giovanni Ricci Concussion DNP DNP DNP Out
OT Cameron Erving Neck, Illness Limited DNP Questionable
C Matt Paradis Knee Full Full

As expected, linebacker Shaq Thompson will miss his third straight game with the plantar fascia issue. Rookie wideout Terrace Marshall Jr. and fullback Giovanni Ricci have also been ruled out.

Conversely, cornerback C.J. Henderson, center Matt Paradis and linebacker Frankie Luvu are all cleared without any game designations.

Panthers injury updates: LB Shaq Thompson ‘very doubtful’ for Week 7

The Panthers likely won’t be getting back LB Shaq Thompson or LG Pat Elflein for Week 7.

The recovery of Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson was always going to be a process. That process will like continue here through Week 7.

On Wednesday, head coach Matt Rhule all but shot down the possibility of getting one of his defensive leaders back against the New York Giants, stating Thompson is “very doubtful” for this Sunday. He has missed the past two games with a strained plantar fascia.

Tuesday’s six-player workout in Carolina included a pair of linebackers, Anthony Hines and Erroll Thompson. That could, perhaps, indicate the team is looking for some much needed depth in Thompson’s absence for the time being.

Left guard Pat Elflein also likely won’t be ready, as alluded to by Rhule. Rhule told reporters that Elflein suffered a setback “in the weight room” while on the comeback from his hamstring injury. That would, in turn, give Michael Jordan his first start for the Panthers this week.

Here’s how the official injury report returned on the day:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
CB C.J. Henderson Shoulder Full
LB Frankie Luvu Biceps Limited
WR Alex Erickson Concussion DNP
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Concussion DNP
LB Shaq Thompson Foot DNP
FB Giovanni Ricci Concussion DNP

Additionally, a fresh stint on the injured reserve for Brandon Zylstra, coupled with the concussions sustained by Terrace Marshall Jr. and Alex Erickson, could leave the offense quite short at the receiver position. That left the Panthers with just three wideouts on the practice field for Wednesday—DJ Moore, Robby Anderson and Shi Smith.

Carolina Panthers vs. Minnesota Vikings game recap: Everything we know

Here’s everything you need to know about the Panthers’ ugly, odd and sad Week 6 loss to the Vikings.

What went up has now come down for the Carolina Panthers in the first six games of the 2021 season. A 3-0 start has, in cringeworthy fashion, been leveled out by an ugly trio of outings.

Here’s how the latest defeat, this time to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6, went down.

Panthers get first blocked punt for a touchdown since 1998

For the first time in 356 games, the Panthers returned a touchdown off a blocked punt.

A blocked punt ultimately ended up dooming the Carolina Panthers in their 21-18 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday. So they must’ve took some notes.

Down 12-10 to the Minnesota Vikings with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Panthers special teams unit stepped up to finally make a big play of their own. Linebacker Frankie Luvu came through, unblocked, to ignite a sudden spark in an otherwise dead afternoon.

The fourth-year backer blocked the attempted punt from Minnesota’s Jordan Berry on a snap that fired off from their own 24-yard line. Safety Kenny Robinson would then scoop up the loose ball at the 4-yard line and take it into the end zone for six.

Robinson’s cleanup helped give the Panthers a 17-12 lead at the 6:49 mark of the third quarter. The score was also the franchise’s first touchdown return off a blocked punt since 1998, which equates to a 356-game span.

Panthers PFF grades: Best and worst from Week 1 vs. Jets

Which Panthers earned themselves the best and worst PFF grades in Sunday’s Week 1 victory over the Jets?

That’s not only the sweet scent of a Carolina Panthers victory you’re currently picking up. It’s also the smell of a fresh batch of Pro Football Focus grades.

Here are, according to PFF, the best and worst performers on both sides of the ball for Carolina in their 19-14 win over the New York Jets.

Projecting the Carolina Panthers’ Week 1 depth chart

How will the Panthers’ depth chart look for Week 1? Well probably like this . . .

The Carolina Panthers are not a finished product as we scoot through this Labor Day weekend. But they’ll need to turn something in ahead of Week 1, despite the work that’s left to be done to the roster.

We take a crack at that here, as we give you our projections for the team’s first regular-season depth chart as they prepare to host the New York Jets in the 2021 opener.

Panthers Preseason: Winners and losers in Saturday’s defeat to Ravens

WR Terrace Marshall Jr. was a standout once again. What other Panthers joined him in the “winner’s circle” on Saturday?

Good luck finding any winners in a 20-3 loss, am I right? Well, let’s try to do it anyway.

Here are some losers and winners from the Carolina Panthers’ preseason defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night:

Winner: LB Frankie Luvu

The man his Panthers teammates now know as “Uce,” Luvu was the biggest standout for Carolina in this one. He wound up with three tackles, a forced fumble, a quarterback hit and a pass breakup in the start alongside Shaq Thompson and Jermaine Carter Jr.

Each play he made felt like a big deal, and to him, it should have. We’ll look back at these last few days with the Ravens and remember it as the week Luvu clinched his spot on the roster.

Loser: The Panthers secondary

Carolina lost cornerback Troy Pride Jr. last week in Indianapolis. He’ll miss the remainder of the season after undergoing ACL surgery.

They took two more hits, perhaps not as serious, with safety Kenny Robinson and corner Keith Taylor. Hopefully, they won’t lose either of these defensive backs for too long, as both were setting themselves up to serve as some solid depth in the secondary.

Winner: QB Will Grier

Those three points came with Grier under center, who was good enough to close a little of the gap in the No. 2 quarterback competition. The offense wasn’t exactly moving under him, but the 2019 third-rounder completed 11 of his 14 throws for 144 yards in a largely controlled performance.

Loser: QB P.J. Walker

That gap closed back the other way also, in part, to Walker’s poor outing. Nothing came easy, or at all for that matter, as he connected on just one of his eight throws after shining in Indianapolis a week ago.

Winner: WR Terrace Marshall Jr.

All this kid seems to do is win this summer. After an 88-yard output in his debut against the Colts, Marshall Jr. once again led the team with 50 receiving yards on three grabs. 34 of them came on this . . .

Loser: K Joey Slye

It’s not great when the head coach says you haven’t “produced at the level” the team needs you to. But, Slye deserved that callout and he has to agree after missing a 37-yarder tonight. He’s now 5-for-8 on kicks this preseason, including a missed extra point.

4 takeaways from the Panthers’ 20-3 preseason loss to Ravens

The very little we saw from the Panthers’ starting defense on Saturday was very big.

It was “Saturday Night Dead,” not “Saturday Night Live” for much of the Carolina Panthers in their second preseason game of the summer. But with some (or mostly) bad, did come some good.

So let’s take a look at four takeaways, each relatively positive in nature because we’re cheery here at Panthers Wire, from the 20-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Panthers highlights: LB Frankie Luvu breaks out the ‘Peanut Punch’

Panthers LB Frankie Luvu channeled his inner Charles Tillman on the forced fumble.

It’s been six years (wow, six?!?!) since we’ve seen cornerback Charles Tillman play for the Carolina Panthers. That, however, doesn’t mean his impact can’t still be felt by the franchise.

Linebacker Frankie Luvu was feeling that big Tillman energy at the end of the first quarter against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. After a 9-yard catch by receiver Josh Oliver, Luvu broke out the ol’ “Peanut Punch” to force a fumble in the red zone.

The loose ball was recovered by safety Sean Chandler at the Carolina 12-yard line, halting an 11-play, 59-yard drive.

Luvu has shined all week through joint practices with Baltimore and carried that energy (his own and the big Tillman energy) onto the field tonight.

Panthers announce 3 more roster moves before first training camp practice

Rookie defensive tackle Phil Hoskins is also being placed on the active/PUP list due to a foot injury.

The Carolina Panthers will be starting their first training camp practice of 2021 in about half an hour. Before they begin, there’s a couple more housekeeping notes.

Yesterday, the team placed outside linebacker Frankie Luvu on the reserve/COVID-19 list and safety Lano Hill on active/PUP. Today, two more players are going on the COVID list: Hill as well as tight end Stephen Sullivan.

Rookie defensive tackle Phil Hoskins is also being placed on the active/PUP list due to a foot injury.
