Frank Clark comments on Bengals-Chiefs as rivalry kicks up another notch

More comments from Chiefs players after the AFC title game.

The rivalry between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs just keeps on growing.

While the Chiefs are on to the Super Bowl to dance with the Philadelphia Eagles after last week’s AFC title game win, Bengals players and fans still have to listen to them being brought up in the aftermath.

The latest comes from Frank Clark, who addressed the rivalry when asked, as captured by ESPN’s Coley Harvey:

“It’s just one of those classic examples of talking trash after the game, you know what I mean? That’s kind of what we did. It’s slowly become one of our rivals in the season. And fortunately, you know, that’s not the team that we’re talking about no more. They got a whole other year to wait … It’s about the Chiefs and the Eagles right about now.”

While it might sting, that’s just how it goes when on the losing end in a rivalry like this. The Bengals can point to the 3-1 record against the Chiefs over the last year or so, but they’re currently going to have to watch Kansas City take this victory lap of sorts.

Clark, by the way, was the guy comparing Joe Burrow to Peyton Manning before the game, so it’s not like he’s public enemy No. 1 for addressing the question this week.

The comments come on the heels of Travis Kelce making an appeal to the city of Cincinnati and Joe Burrow giving his thoughts about the rivalry.

Eagles-Chiefs: 10 early stats to know for Super Bowl LVll

We’re looking at 10 early stats to know for the #SuperBowlLVll matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl LVll is set and it’ll have several significant storylines after the Chiefs defeated the Bengals 23-20 in the AFC Championship Game.

Legendary head coach Andy Reid will face his former team, while Jason and Travis Kelce will make the first siblings to face each other in the Super Bowl.

Travis Kelce caught seven balls for 78 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City’s three-point AFC Championship win, while Philadelphia amassed 148 rushing yards in a 31-7 NFC Championship win.

The Super Bowl will be a rematch of a 2021 regular season meeting in which Patrick Mahomes threw five touchdown passes and the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 42-30.

In that 2021 matchup, Reid returned to Philadelphia and earned his 100th career win with the Chiefs, becoming the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two teams.

Reid’s 140 victories with the Eagles are the most in franchise history.

The 2021 matchup was also a coming-out party for Jalen Hurts who threw for a career-high 387 yards and two touchdowns but Philadelphia (1-3) couldn’t keep up with Kansas City’s high-powered offense.

With preparation underway for both teams, here are 10 initial stats to know for Super Bowl LVll.

WATCH: Chiefs’ Andy Reid, Frank Clark share moment after AFC Championship Game win

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid and DE Frank Clark shared a wholesome moment on the field after the AFC Championship Game win.

Frank Clark’s offseason all started with a heart-to-heart with Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid. That honesty inspired Clark to reevaluate some things this offseason. He cut out red meat and liquor, but he also rededicated himself to the game. As a result, Clark had a much more productive season and postseason, recording 2.5 sacks over the past two games.

After the AFC Championship Game over the Cincinnati Bengals, cameras caught a moment between Clark and his head coach. The league’s behind-the-scenes show on Paramount Plus, “Inside The NFL” shared the moment between the two in a clip on Twitter.

“Love you, coach,” Clark says.

“Love you too, man,” Reid responds.

The two share an embrace and Clark says to Reid.

“Got you another one, huh? Got you another one. Love you, dawg. We’re the ones. Got our *expletive* back.”

All the while, Reid is just laughing maniacally as if this was the plan all along. Two Los Angeles natives, helping their team achieve greatness in winning the Lamar Hunt Trophy, heading to the Super Bowl again for the third time in the last four years. They’ve still got work to do in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, but it’s hard to not appreciate such a tender moment between the two.

5 way-too-early predictions (Chris Jones tyrannizing Jalen Hurts) that will totally happen in Super Bowl 57

Anything can and probably WILL happen in Super Bowl 57.

It’s easy to say now, especially in an NFL season that’s seemingly been so volatile from the jump, but we should be in store for quite the treat when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Super Bowl 57.

Because despite all of the chaos, we are ultimately getting a matchup of two top-seeds and two 14-win teams. It’s the first Super Bowl tilt of No. 1 seeds since the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 52 — half a decade ago. In the heavily adjusted paraphrased words of the immortal “Macho Man” Randy Savage: It’s unjustifiably a position we’d rather be in, the cream has risen to the top, and we are getting the cream of the crop.

Take it away, Mr. Savage:

In the coming days, there’ll be a lot of bold declarations and (superfluous) analysis of what to envision from a game that features Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, etc., etc., etc. (Takes a deep breath) So, in the interest of helping you cut through the thick brush, I’ve rounded up a few way-too-early predictions about what we’ll definitely see unfold in Arizona.

Peer into my glorious crystal ball, and you won’t be remotely shocked once you see these happenings take place in Super Bowl 57.

Chiefs DE Frank Clark can ascend sack leaderboard, hit contract incentive vs. Bengals

#Chiefs DE Frank Clark has $500K, a spot on the all-time playoff sack leaderboard and a trip to the Super Bowl on the line vs. the #Bengals. | from @TheJohnDillon

Frank Clark has been an enigmatic part of the Kansas City Chiefs defense during the regular season but always seems to find an extra gear in the playoffs. He managed to bring down Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence last week in the Chiefs’ first playoff win of the postseason and will need to find his way into the Cincinnati Bengals’ backfield with regularity to lift Kansas City to another Super Bowl berth.

With a sack of Joe Burrow in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, Clark could improve his position on the NFL’s all-time playoff sack leaderboard. He would pass both Reggie White, who he’s currently tied with, and one-time Chiefs player Terrell Suggs, who has a half-sack advantage over Clark heading into the matchup.

It is also worth noting that Clark has incentives in his contract that would pay him a hefty sum if the Chiefs manage to pull out a win on Sunday. CBS Sports salary cap wizard Joel Corry has the details:

As if the prospect of a Super Bowl berth wasn’t enough reason to play hard, the amount of pride and money on the line should provide Clark plenty of motivation to be a game-wrecker on Kansas City’s defensive line. Against a Bengals offense whose only weakness is their ailing offensive front, the veteran pass rusher seems primed to do something special.

Frank Clark on challenge of facing Joe Burrow: ‘He’s got that Peyton Manning in him’

Clark compared Joe Burrow to one of the most venerated quarterbacks in NFL history in his comments to the media on Friday. | from @TheJohnDillon

For the second-straight season, the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game for their chance to clinch another Super Bowl berth.

But it certainly won’t be an easy matchup for Kansas City, which has lost to Cincinnati in their last three meetings against the Bengals. Defensive lineman Frank Clark told reporters on Friday about the challenges posed by quarterback Joe Burrow, who has proven to be one of the only signal callers in the league who can consistently give the Chiefs’ defense fits.

“I think – just number one, I feel like (as a) pocket quarterback, I feel like he’s the best in the game,” Clark explained. “He’s got that Peyton Manning in him. No matter how many times he gets hit, no matter how many times he gets knocked down, he’s getting back up (and) he’s controlling, bringing and pulling his offense back together and making the adjustments and making the right plays.

“He knows how to read safeties and he knows how to read the defense and when you’re an immature defense or when you’re a defense that can’t really disguise the coverage or disguise things, he’s going to pick you apart every time. I feel like in the past – the last few games those are things that he’s been able to do is just expose us in those different aspects.”

Clark’s assessment of Burrow’s skillset is spot-on, and it will be his job to mitigate the threat of the Bengals’ excellent quarterback in all four quarters on Sunday. If he can, the Chiefs stand to advance to their third Super Bowl in four seasons with the chance to cement themselves as the NFL’s team to beat heading into the 2023 season.

Andy Reid describes Frank Clark as a ‘relentless’ presence in Chiefs’ D-Line

Speaking on #Chiefs DE Frank Clark’s place in the postseason sack record books, Andy Reid praised Clark’s “relentless” presence on the defensive line. | from @TheJohnDillon

Kansas City Chiefs veteran defensive end Frank Clark has taken quite a bit of flak from fans since joining the team in 2019, but head coach Andy Reid seemed content with his contributions in comments made during the team’s Wednesday media availability session.

Clark secured a sack in the AFC divisional round against the Jacksonville Jaguars, moving into a tie with Hall of Famer Reggie White for the fourth-most sacks in NFL postseason history. Asked about Clark’s spot in the top five on the NFL’s all-time postseason sacks leaderboard, Reid told reporters that he recognizes the edge that the lineman brings to the Chiefs’ defense, especially in the postseason.

“He’s always fired up but he – I guess there’s a little something extra there that he has but he’s a relentless player all the time,” Reid explained. “His numbers speak for themselves throughout his career. It’s quite a record – or opportunity for a record there with the sacks in the playoffs. You’ve got to get there first to get them, right? And, so he’s had a lot of opportunities to do that when he was in Seattle and now here.”

Clark will need to put together a masterful performance this weekend to help Kansas City get an elusive win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game, which would give the Chiefs their third Super Bowl berth in four years. He was sick during the Week 13 matchup with the Bengals and was unable to muster a single sack.

If Clark can hassle Joe Burrow in the pocket or create openings for other linemen and linebackers to get into Cincinnati’s backfield, his contributions could prove to be game-breaking advantages for the Chiefs with their season on the line.

4 takeaways from Chiefs’ AFC divisional round win vs. Jaguars

The #Chiefs’ spectacular win against the #Jaguars on Saturday puts them one step closer to a Super Bowl berth. | from @TheJohnDillon

The story of this game starts and ends with the ankle injury sustained by Patrick Mahomes in the first half, which could have huge implications on the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff hopes moving forward.

Though they were outmatched by Kansas City from the start, the Jacksonville Jaguars fought hard in this game, and certainly gave the Chiefs a run for their money. With just more one game standing between Kansas City and a shot at another Super Bowl ring, Mahomes will need to lick his wounds in the coming days to win a crucial game next week.

Here are four key takeaways from the Chiefs’ Divisional Round win over the Jaguars:
