Texas Football: Top games to rewatch during quarantine

We’ve compiled a list of the best Texas football games to relive during the quarantine.

Do you miss watching Texas sports?

While there are no live sporting events present on our televisions due to the Coronoavirus (COVID-10) outbreak, we’ve compiled a list of the best Texas Longhorns football games to relive during the quarantine.

Other than the 2006 Rose Bowl where quarterback Vince Young scrambled for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to defeat the University of Southern California, it’s tough to rank the most exciting outcomes when there are many to choose from.

Here are just a few of our favorites.

Former Texas QB weighs in on the Dak Prescott contract situation

Former Texas quarterback Chris Simms spoke with Pro Football Talk on Thursday regarding Dak Prescott’s contract negotiations.

One of the primary debates surrounding the National Football League this offseason has been the contract negotiations regarding Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

What makes this decision difficult is the weight of what Prescott is worth versus what the Cowboys are willing to pay him. It’s clear that both sides would like to come to a mutual agreement, but what will it take?

Unfortunately, standstill contract negotiations happen quite often in professional sports. This may be why several former players seem to chime in on what they would do if they were in Prescott’s shoes.

Former Texas quarterback Chris Simms recently spoke with Pro Football Talk on Thursday regarding Prescott’s situation. Similar to what running back Emmitt Smith told the media earlier this week, Simms also believes that Prescott should consider a team-friendly deal.

Some players firmly believe that you should reach for the highest-paid contract while you have the chance, while others prefer to put the team above themselves and take what they’re offered.

Simms agrees with the latter, stating that he feels it would garner respect from inside the organization.

“If I were Dak Prescott, and in his situation, I would consider taking less. I would. I wouldn’t necessarily be looking to just break the bank and be the highest-paid quarterback in the history of football – and because it’s the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a great way to earn great respect in your locker room. If you just took a little less it really could go a long way. That’s all i’m saying.”

Simms accounted for 7,097 yards and 58 touchdowns throughout his collegiate career at Texas from 1999 to 2002. After being selected in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft, Simms spent his professional career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos.

Texas’ Brandon Jones among best safeties available in the NFL Draft

Former Texas safety Brandon Jones is listed as a top 10 player at his position ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft.

There’s no shortage of talent available in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Texas’ highest-rated prospects are safety Brandon Jones and wide receivers Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay. The trio were invited to the Senior Bowl, but Jones was unfortunately unable to attend due to injury.

Although missing the Senior Bowl didn’t appear to hinder Jones’ draft stock, it would have been a great opportunity to improve it. Jones will now only have the chance to impress NFL scouts and executives at the NFL Combine and Pro Day.

Widely projected to be a top 100 selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jones is considered a top 10 player at his position according to Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling.

Our colleagues at the Draft Wire recently ranked the top safeties available ahead of April’s draft, Jones landed at the No. 6 spot. The fourth-year defensive back appeared in 42 career games for Texas, making 31 starts.

He’s just as impressive off the field as he is on it, being one of six Longhorns elected by teammates as a team captain for the 2019 season and a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

As a senior, Jones started eight games for the Longhorns, where he led the team with 55 tackles. The 6-0, 205-pound do-it-all safety finished his Texas career with 202 total tackles.

Jones’ best trait is the physical style of play that he showcases each time he steps onto the field, he oftentimes punishes receivers with powerful hits. He is a relentless player with exceptional tackling abilities who can potentially start at strong safety at the next level.

Trio of former Longhorns among finalists for 2020 Olympic roster

USA Basketball recently announced the 44 finalists for the 2020 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball roster which includes three former Longhorns.

Three former Longhorns were announced as finalists for the 2020 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team roster today.

This particular list of 44 athletes is the first step to compiling the overall 12-man roster that will represent the United States in the Olympics. Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, center Myles Turner, and small forward/power forward Kevin Durant all have a chance to compete in Tokyo. As the NBA season progresses, these former Texas stars will be monitored closely by USA Basketball to ultimately determine whether or not they will be among the final roster.

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games will be held July 24-Aug. 9 in Tokyo, Japan.

Aldridge is averaging 18.7 points per game with the San Antonio Spurs this season. His 7.5 rebounds per game is ranked 30th-best in the NBA.

With the Indiana Pacers, Turner’s best game thus far came against the Chicago Bulls on Jan. 10, scoring 27 points and securing 14 rebounds.

After suffering a torn achilles tendon roughly eight months ago, Durant is finally beginning to show progress. Although the New York Nets have essentially ruled out Durant for the entire season, his rehab seems to be going well.

WATCH: Texas ex Justin Tucker nails 70-yard field goal at Pro Bowl

Former Texas kicker Justin Tucker is casually enjoying his time at the NFL Pro Bowl by drilling 70-yard field goals.

To no surprise, former Texas kicker Justin Tucker was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl at the completion of the 2019 season. The all-star game will take place on Sunday, January 26, in Orlando, Florida.

What may come as a surprise, however, is Tucker casually nailing a 70-yard field goal during Pro Bowl practice this week as if it were a normal occurrence.

Tucker made 28 of 29 field goals and 57 of 59 extra points for the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. This marked his second-highest season percentage of ninety-six percent.

One of the most impressive accolades for the former Longhorn is being selected to five All Pro teams throughout his tenure in the NFL, four of those being First-Team selections.

Former Longhorn Kenny Vaccaro Called His Shot

Former Texas Longhorns safety Kenny Vaccaro claims he called his shot when picking off Lamar Jackson.

Former Texas Longhorns’ and New Orleans Saints’ safety called his shot against the likely NFL Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson in their win over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Playoff game. According to the Tennessee Titans twitter account, Vaccaro called his pick against the Ravens that helped seal the deal to head to the AFC Title game in Kansas City.

This the first season that Vaccaro has been able to participate in the NFL postseason and he is taking every advantage of the opportunity in hopes of getting his first Super Bowl Championship.

“Kenny played safety the way I envision safety being played. He threw his body around and got in there”-Mike Vrabel on Vacarro to Turron Davenport of ESPN.

On Sunday, the Titans head to Kansas City in hopes of playing spoiler as the underdogs on the road for the third straight week. The 2019 Tennessee Titans look to become just the third sixth seed to win the Super Bowl. In 2010, the Green Bay Packers won it after winning three straight road playoff games to make the Super Bowl. In 2005, the Pittsburgh Steelers became the first since 1990 to pull off the championship run.

On Sunday, two former Longhorns are looking to get to the Super Bowl. Alex Okafor won’t be playing in the game and Vaccaro will be looking to make his mark against the Chiefs.

WATCH: Former Texas safety picks off Lamar Jackson in playoffs

Former Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro picks off Lamar Jackson in the Titans impressive AFC playoff win on Saturday night.

For the second week in a row, the Tennessee Titans pulled off a NFL playoffs upset. After squeaking into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed, the Titans defeated the New England Patriots in the wildcard round.

Was it a one-time thing? Had the Patriots lost their dominance? It doesn’t appear that just luck was on their side, as the Titans went into Baltimore on Saturday night and upset the No. 1 seed.

They’re now legitimate contenders.

The Titans defense forced three turnovers against the Ravens, former Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro was right in the middle of them. Near the end of the third quarter, Vaccaro intercepts quarterback Lamar Jackson’s pass intended for receiver Miles Boykin.

This impressive interception on third down was key in preventing the Ravens from a realistic chance at a comeback. There are quite a few former Longhorns remaining in the playoffs, but Vaccaro has arguably made the most impact.

WATCH: Quandre Diggs gets his second interception of the game

After an interception that went for a touchdown earlier in the game, former Texas cornerback Quandre Diggs picked off Rams quarterback Jared Goff for the second time in as many drives.

This one was different than the first one, as it was downfield. Goff threw it deep to wide receiver Brandon Cooks on 3rd and 5 but overthrew him by a few yards. Diggs was five yards behind the receiver, being in the perfect position to intercept the pass.

You can watch the interception here:

This is Diggs’ third interception of the year, all being with the Seahawks. He continues to make big plays for Seattle, keeping them in games.
