Former Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert waived by the Browns

Former Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert has bounced around the NFL since 2014. The Cleveland Browns waived him during roster cutdowns.

When Garrett Gilbert arrived in Austin, there was a lot expected of him. He was supposed to be the heir to Colt McCoy following the 2009 college football season. A highly touted passer out of Austin at Lake Travis. Gilbert was a five-star recruit and the No. 2 ranked pro style quarterback in the country. It never really became what many expected.

Gilbert showed promise after a rocky start relieving McCoy in the BCS National Championship game. However, the following season didn’t go into his favor. Gilbert eventually would transfer to SMU before heading to the NFL. Since the 2014 NFL Draft where he was drafted in the sixth round by the then St Louis Rams, Gilbert has bounced around.

He made stops in St Louis, New England, Detroit, Oakland and Carolina. His latest gig came in Cleveland. On the cut down to the 53-man roster, the Browns waived Gilbert in hopes he could join their practice squad.

The former USA TODAY High School All-American has thrown just six passes in his NFL career. Before the AAF folded, Gilbert was the passing leader and passing rating leader for the Orlando Apollos. Gilbert will likely be placed on the Browns practice squad, just in case his services will be needed in Cleveland.

Longhorns in the NFL: Is the Earl Thomas to Dallas watch on?

With the release of HaHa Clinton-Dix could the Dallas Cowboys be eyeing former Texas Longhorns safety Earl Thomas? They should be.

For the last couple of weeks many have speculated about what is next for former Texas Longhorns safety Earl Thomas. He was released from the Baltimore Ravens after an altercation with teammate Chuck Clark. This came off the heels of a domestic dispute with his wife over the offseason. Of course the team that is linked to Thomas most are the Dallas Cowboys.

One of the weakest positions for the Cowboys is in fact their secondary. Especially after losing All-Pro Byron Jones. Not to mention their inability to create turnovers has been quite evident over the last decade plus. However, there is some optimism with a new regime in place that they can turn it around.

During roster cut down to 53-man roster, the Cowboys released former Alabama safety HaHa Clinton-Dix. Many felt he would be the starter opposite of Xavier Woods, but he was losing ground to Darian Thompson as the starter. Woods is currently nursing his injuries but the team doesn’t feel it is serious. Former Longhorns Network reporter Jane Slater who currently reports for NFL Network, tweeted out the news of Clinton-Dix being cut doesn’t mean anything on the Thomas front.

While that may hold merit, Thomas is still available and has shown he is still capable of making plays. For a defense that hasn’t had a playmaker on the backend in years, it makes sense to kick the tires on the possibility. The team lacks depth and experience at the position. Discussions of moving a cornerback to safety has been the talk of camp. Including Reggie Robinson who they selected in the 2020 NFL Draft.

If the Cowboys want to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy then they need to find a playmaker who can create turnovers. Earl Thomas has been on the biggest stage and he has the experience the young secondary could use. All they have to do in the words of Thomas is “come get me.”

Former Texas star Earl Thomas’ future with Baltimore is now uncertain

Former Texas safety Earl Thomas’ troublesome offseason may cause the Ravens to release him before the season begins.

Former Texas safety Earl Thomas may be released by the Baltimore Ravens after a troublesome offseason.

In April 2020, Thomas was held at gunpoint by his wife, Nina Heisser, after an alleged cheating scandal. In the court documents, Heisser alluded to the fact that Thomas had began drinking on a consistent basis.

His erratic behavior has unfortunately continued throughout Ravens camp. According to CBS Sports NFL reporter Jason La Canfora, Thomas’ participation in position meetings has been an issue.

It’s not just the off-field problems.

On Friday, Thomas was involved in a physical altercation on the field with fellow safety Chuck Clark. Several teammates believe that Thomas was in the wrong for the scuffle.

It appears that the Ravens could make a final decision on Thomas’ future as soon as Saturday. It’s not likely to end well considering the team’s leadership council does not want to tolerate that type of behavior.

The potential for team discipline such as a suspension has seemed likely, but it’s possible that Thomas’ career as a Raven could be over completely.

It can’t be an easy decision considering Thomas is a three-time first-team All-Pro and one of the most talented and productive safeties in the NFL. On top of that, his contract has more dead money right now than the Ravens have cap space.

Oddly enough, another former Longhorn could fill in for Thomas should he continue his career elsewhere. Ravens players have voiced confidence and strong support for DeShon Elliott.

Elliott was drafted by Baltimore in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The rising safety compiled six tackles last season before being placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.
