Fantasy Football Market Report: Week 5

The most important risers and fallers in fantasy football.

One of the aspects of fantasy football that never fails to amaze me is when fantasy owners don’t take into account bye weeks. Week 5 will be the last time in a long time that every player on most rosters will be available.

Injuries do their part to gut fantasy rosters, so players who had no draft-day intention of being in the starting lineup are there more weeks than not. Bye weeks are a meaningless gutting – those guys are healthy, just not playing.

There will be eight weeks in which at least two and as many as six teams will be on bye. If you’re a seasoned fantasy player, you probably paid attention to the bye weeks as you were assembling a draft/auction roster, but a lot has happened since then.

A week from now it will dawn on some casual players that the bye weeks have started. You can be ahead of that curve and prepare for it now. If you see a week that will be rough, make a trade to diversify your roster. There will be someone in your league who effectively forfeits a week because too many key players are on their bye. Don’t let that be you.

These are some of the players Jason will be locking in his lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel for this weekend’s slate.

Quarterbacks

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

$6,900 DRAFTKINGS
$8,100 FANDUEL

Dak has yet to have to repeat that ceiling game in Week 1 to start the season. It’s pretty crazy to think that the Cowboys have won 3 games in a row while Dak has thrown for 188, 238, and 237 yards in those games. Dallas is looking great as a team and I think this is a spot in the division versus the Giants that has that big 25+ point game written all over it. The matchup versus the Giants is juicy and Vegas has the over set at 52, so we should see a bunch of points here from Dallas. With this being an in division game, I think the Giants fight tough through four quarters and this game stays competitive. Ownership will be down on Dak after the past couple performances being underwhelming where you will get a quarterback with a 30+ ceiling at under 10% ownership which makes him a great play for cash and tournaments.

Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings

$6,500 DRAFTKINGS
$7,500 FANDUEL

Not many people respect Kirk Cousins and even fewer people have the courage to play him in DFS. Kirk had 3 back to back to back 25+ DraftKings games before his tough matchup versus Cleveland last week. With that matchup in our rear view mirror we are blessed with a nice matchup versus Detroit where the over is set to 49 points. The Lions are allowing 28.3 points per game and it should lead to a 30+ point performance from the Vikings offense. Unlike some other quarterbacks, the decision on who to pair them with is easy with Cousins. Lock up Kirk with Jefferson in both tournaments and cash games in Week 5.

Running Backs

Saquon Barkley, New York Giants

$7,300 DRAFTKINGS
$7,800 FANDUEL

Saquon Barkley is the Giants offense. Everything is funneling through him and if the Giants want to have any shot to win they need to continue to increase his workload through more touches and targets. He went from 16 combined touches and targets, to 23, to 19 these past 3 weeks. If you give Saquon that form of volume or more the production will surely follow. Two back to back performances of 20+ fantasy points has me believing the man is back. With the game script in Barkley’s favor the Giants should be playing from behind which should lean to more targets. I prefer Barkley in games where the Giants will be trailing because I think he’s most dangerous and effective from a fantasy perspective when he’s catching passes. Barkley has the skill set to take anything to the house and I like him as a core play for Week 5.

James Robinson, Jacksonville Jaguars

$6,000 DRAFTKINGS
$7,400 FANDUEL

If you get beat by the New York Jets you have a problem. If you allow the Jets to score 27 you will be targeted by every opposing offense from a DFS perspective moving forward. This Titan defense is getting gashed by their opponents and Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars are set up for some fantasy goodness, and maybe even their first victory. Robinson is a 3 down back for the Jaguars, their goal line back, and a back which should see increased volume in the passing game as well. Coming off two 20+ point performances in consecutive weeks has me thinking a 3rd is right around the corner. The matchup is juicy, the volume will be there, and the price tag especially on DraftKings is appetizing. Load up on Robinson in Week 5 and get different in other spots.

Wide receivers

Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings

$7,700 DRAFTKINGS
$8,000 FANDUEL

If people want to fade Cousins go right ahead, but they will have an even tougher time fading Jefferson. Jefferson is another player coming off two 20+ point performances in consecutive weeks and he is the alpha receiver in this offense. With touchdowns in three consecutive weeks and a Detroit defense who is getting torched, our projection model at WinDailySports.com projects Jefferson as the second highest scoring receiver on the slate. Lock up Jefferson in both cash games and tournaments.

DJ Moore, Carolina Panthers

$7,500 DRAFTKINGS
$7,900 FANDUEL

People want to deny the production each week and continue to fade Moore. Don’t keep telling yourself that he is due for a bad game, maybe start questioning if Moore is the 2021 version of Adams. I know it sounds crazy to compare the connection of Darnold and Moore to Rodgers and Adams but numbers don’t lie. The targets are increasing along with yardage and touchdowns, and I don’t see it stopping in Week 5 versus the Eagles. The earlier you identify the trends the better your returns. We have two trends which align to make this a smash play in Week 5. Number 1 is the fact that Moore is the focal point of this offense and number 2 is how bad this Eagles defense continues to be. Lock up another 20+ point performance from Moore in Week 5.

Tight ends

TJ Hockenson, Detroit Lions

$5,500 DRAFTKINGS
$6,400 FANDUEL

This should be a bounce back spot for Hockenson after two consecutive down weeks. He took a day off at practice and appeared on the injury report so be mindful of that as more news comes out prior to game time. If Hockenson is a full go and all reports lean to him being healthy we can see an outburst from him versus the Vikings. Vegas has this game scoring 49 points and with the Lions having zero elite receivers, a good portion of their game plan will be funneled through Hockenson. The Vikings are allowing 250+ passing yards per game and that should be enough for Hockenson to eclipse the 15 fantasy point mark and if he can find a way into the end zone it should lead to even a bigger week.

Dalton Schultz, Dallas Cowboys

$4,400 DRAFTKINGS
$6,200 FANDUEL

I wrote up Schultz last week in my tight end article on Win Daily and I will be doubling down this week as well. Schultz is no slouch, and his workload has increased every week since Gallup went down with an injury. A 26 point performance versus Philadelphia followed by a 17 point game versus Carolina has me thinking we found a diamond in the rough with Schultz. It’s hard to predict if Cooper or Lamb will be the guy from week to week but targeting Schultz instead has led to a positive outcome. I like the play more on DraftKings but he’s a fine play on both sites in Week 5.

Good luck in Week 5, and if you ever have any questions, please hit me up on Twitter!

Targets, Touches and TDs: Week 5

Six fantasy football stats that should surprise even the most experienced gamers.

NFL Week 4 is now in the books, which means we are roughly a quarter way through the 2021 fantasy season.

So with a decent sample size also in the ledger, here’s a six-pack of the more surprising fantasy-oriented statistics we’ve come across so far.

Here goes, starting with …

83.4 — total fantasy points (point-per-reception scoring) for Atlanta Falcons RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson

Not only does that total easily lead all Falcons skill-position players — a contingent that includes top-five-round fantasy draft picks Calvin Ridley, Kyle Pitts and Mike Davis — but it trails only the Tennessee Titans’ Derrick Henry (101.5) and the Los Angeles Chargers’ Austin Ekeler (84.4) among all running backs and ranks behind just the Los Angeles Rams’ Cooper Kupp (102.6), the Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill (102.3), the San Francisco 49ers’ Deebo Samuel (95.9), and the Carolina Panthers’ D.J. Moore (89.7) among wide receivers as he’s eligible at both positions on several fantasy league host sites.

More improbably, Patterson’s 83.4 fantasy points have come on just 49 total opportunities, 45 touches and 97 offensive snaps (a 34.4 percent share of Atlanta’s total offensive snaps).

And with his 354 total yards from scrimmage and five total TDs, it already ranks as the sixth-best fantasy season in nine years for the 30-year-old journeyman who’s playing on his fifth team.

Sure, scoring a TD on every ninth touch, as Patterson has this season, isn’t exactly sustainable, but this impressive start very likely will just lead to more snaps, opportunities and touches going forward for the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Patterson — especially with the lead back Davis struggling with low-efficiency averages of 3.1 yards per rush and 3.6 yards per touch.

It’s also been a slow start for Ridley so far with the wideout averaging career lows in yards per reception (9.4) and yards per target (6.1) while scoring one TD. The promising Pitts, meanwhile, is still awaiting his first trip to the end zone while going through the typical rookie tight end struggles with a 57.7 catch percentage on 26 targets.

5 — Rushing TDs for Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold, which not only paces all quarterbacks but is tied for the overall league lead.

Perhaps you’ve caught some of the clever “Cam” Darnold mentions, referencing a certain run-heavy former Carolina Panthers quarterback.

Now, sure, Darnold has as many ground scores as he does passing TDs so far, but his overall rushing figures aren’t exactly Newtonian numbers with Darnold only ranking 20th among quarterbacks with 52 rushing yards to date and averaging just 2.6 yards per carry. The five rushing TDs also have matched his career total entering the season after three campaigns with the New York Jets.

Let’s not short Darnold’s aerial start, though, as he’s passed for the sixth most yards (1,189) in the league so far while averaging a career-high 8.1 yards per attempt. His current passer rating (95.4) and QBR (62.7) are easily on track to hit career high-water marks.

Still, no QB has compiled more rushing fantasy points so far than Darnold’s 35.2 as he ranks fifth overall at the position with 114.7 total fantasy points. And while he doesn’t figure to continue scoring on 25 percent of his rushing attempts going forward, his 3.4 TD pass percentage is due some positive regression with the weapons at his disposal in Carolina as it ranks below his 3.7 percentage during his Jets’ tenure.

At the least, Darnold has put himself in the low-end QB1 conversation and looks to be quite the find as a last-ditch late pick in two-quarterback leagues.

0 — Running backs, tight ends or wide receivers currently ranked among the top 12 at their respective fantasy positions for the league’s highest-scoring (and only undefeated) team, the 4-0 Arizona Cardinals.

Notice we didn’t mention quarterback as Kyler Murray trails only the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (132.1) with 128.6 fantasy points (Huddle PPR scoring). Murray has had a hand in 12 of the Cards’ 16 offensive TDs with nine passing and three rushing scores to rank second among QBs with 12 total touchdowns.

But that’s where the fantasy predictability ends with the Cards.

Newly signed running back James Conner has accounted for the other four non-Murray offensive TDs — all on rushes of four yards or fewer — but those TDs account for more than half of his fantasy-point production as he ranks 25th at the position with 46.8 PPR points on 56 touches.

Holdover Chase Edmonds, meanwhile, ranks 13th among league running backs with a team-leading 395 total yards, including 140 on a team-high 20 receptions, but he has yet to find his way across the goal line on 63 touches.

At tight end, seventh-year vet Maxx Williams has been a nice surprise, reeling in 15 of his 16 targets for 179 yards and a TD to rank 13th at the position with 38.9 fantasy points.

The most surprising and intriguing numbers, though, belong to the Cards’ wide receivers.

It’s no shocker that DeAndre Hopkins is pacing the contingent in targets and fantasy points, but 6.25 targets and 14.4 fantasy points per outing isn’t what anyone envisioned when they spent a second-round fantasy pick on the veteran wideout, who currently ranks 24th at the position with 57.5 total points.

WRs Christian Kirk (52.4 fantasy points) and A.J. Green (51.8) also are top-30 fantasy receivers, ranking 29th and 30th, respectively, while rookie Rondale Moore (44.3) ranks 46th, thanks largely to a 24.4-point Week 2 outburst.

It’s been a tightly packed wideout quartet, though, with all four falling between 18-25 targets, 15-17 receptions, and 223-248 scrimmage yards.

Good news for Green, Kirk and Moore fantasy owners, but not so swell for the D-Hop GMs.

25 — targets for Los Angeles Rams WR Robert Woods, which is 21 fewer than teammate Cooper Kupp’s league-leading total of 46

Woods has led the Rams in targets in each of his first three seasons in L.A., averaging a robust 8.4 per game.

Kupp, meanwhile, has been essentially a co-WR1 with Woods, attracting only 10 fewer targets than his teammate the last two seasons following his injury-marred, eight-game 2018 campaign. In that time, Kupp averaged 8.0 targets per contest.

But with ballyhooed arrival of new QB Matthew Stafford this season, Kupp’s usage has soared to 11.5 targets per game, fueling his ascension to the top of the fantasy wideout heap with 102.6 total points.

Woods, meanwhile, has seen his per-game looks dip to 6.25 targets per contest, and he came out of Week 4 tied for 40th among wideouts with 46.0 total fantasy points. It’s been a frustrating start for Woods and his fantasy owners alike, and after he caught a 14-yard scoring pass in garbage time of Sunday’s 37-20 home loss to the Cardinals, he purposely flung the ball aside for emphasis.

Woods’ decline in targets also has led to an apparent conversation with head coach Sean McVay, who was quoted in a post-Week 4 interview saying “Robert is a leader, he’s a captain, and he’s been doing a great job up to this point. We just need to get him some more opportunities, and that starts with me.”

Don’t expect Kupp’s WR 1a status to change as he and Stafford simply have established too strong of a connection. But Woods is too talented to be taking this distant of a backseat, so look for his looks to jump up much closer to his 8.4-target average of recent seasons as opposing defenses invariably start shading more coverage Kupp’s way.

20 — receptions for Dallas Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz, which ranks fourth among league tight ends

Schultz also ranks fourth overall at the position of fantasy scarcity with 58.1 PPR points — an average of 14.5 per outing.

This isn’t a total shocker given that Schultz did finish 2020 ranked 10th among fantasy tight ends with 148.5 total points — an average of 9.3 per game. But with injured fellow tight end Blake Jarwin and QB Dak Prescott back from injuries that scuttled the majority of their 2020 seasons, and WR CeeDee Lamb’s anticipated second-year leap, Schultz’s fantasy production figured to go down — not up.

However, with opposing defenses far more concerned about the Cowboys’ other weapons, Schultz has taken advantage with a highly productive efficiency, reeling in 20 of 23 targets for 201 yards and a team-lead-matching three TD receptions.

Among league tight ends, only highly drafted studs Travis Kelce (24), Darren Waller (24) and T.J. Hockenson (22) have more receptions than Schultz so far.

Looking forward, WR Michael Gallup is due back soon from an early-season injury calf injury — just another reason why Schultz likely won’t wind up with enough target volume to maintain his elite TE1 ranking on a run-heavy team.

But, as 2020 and the first quarter of this season have shown, Schultz has earned a place as a starter in the majority of 10-team fantasy leagues.

86 and 55 — passing attempts and completions for New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston, the fewest in both categories among quarterbacks who have started four games

Only one team is attempting fewer than 25 passes per game or passing on fewer than 47 percent of their total plays. And it’s not the perennially run-heavy Baltimore Ravens or Cleveland Browns, who lead the league with an average of 177 ground yards per game.

Somewhat stunningly, it’s head coach Sean Payton’s New Orleans Saints, who are attempting only 22.5 passes per contest and throwing on 42.2 percent of their total plays — a full 5.0 percentage points behind the next lowest team, the Browns.

It’s most certainly a 180-degree turn from five seasons ago when the Drew Brees-led Saints ranked second in the league with an average of 42.1 passes per game — throwing on 63.4 percent of their total plays.

The lack of air attempts has certainly had an effect on fantasy fortunes in the Big Easy.

Jameis Winston has thrown for only 613 yards — a full 260 fewer than any other QB who’s started all four weeks. And even though Winston opened the season with five passing TDs and 31.1 fantasy points — on just 20 attempts and 14 completions — he’s totaled three aerial scores and 43.5 fantasy points in his three games since to rank 23rd among fantasy QBs on the season.

Only two New Orleans pass-catchers have double-digit receptions so far, with WR Deonte Harris leading the way with 11 for a team-high 164 yards.

Preseason WR sleeper Marquez Callaway has only drawn 13 targets in four games, catching nine of them for 137 yards and a TD. That’s 28.7 PPR points — 72nd among wideouts.

Stud RB Alvin Kamara is averaging a career-high 15.6 rushing attempts per game — way up from pre-2021 average of 11.2 — but his PPR value has taken a noticeable ding with only 10 receptions on his team-leading 14 targets for 62 yards so far to rank 15th among RBs with 57.9 total fantasy points.

Even with the expanded 17-game schedule, Kamara is on pace for 43 receptions and 264 receiving yards. He’s never had fewer than 81 catches and 533 receiving yards in any of his first four seasons.

Perhaps the pending midseason return of injured No. 1 wideout Michael Thomas will inspire more passing attempts in the Big Easy. But then again, Thomas could simply take his place on the list of fantasy victims of the new aerial-averse Saints.

Fantasy Football Rest of Season Rankings: Week 5

How do players rate going ahead after one month of play?

These fantasy football rankings track a player’s value for the remainder of the season and are intended to be used as a tool, not necessarily a definitive guide to player valuation.

The scoring system is performance PPR. There is no exact science behind season-long rankings, considering all of the variables and situational uncertainties at work.

Fantasy Football Market Report: Week 5

Fantasy football risers and fallers entering Week 5.

There is a fantasy football trend becoming more popular all the time – complementing every-week stars in your lineups with players going against teams fielding high-powered offenses and shaky defenses that look worse when they’re in “prevent” mode to close out a win.

Opposing quarterbacks facing the Kansas City Chiefs have thrown for more yards than Patrick Mahomes. Opposing quarterbacks of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have thrown for more yards and thrown more touchdowns than Tom Brady. Opposing quarterbacks facing the Dallas Cowboys have thrown for almost 300 more yards than Dak Prescott. Opposing quarterbacks facing the Baltimore Ravens are averaging 293 yards a game. Opposing quarterbacks facing the Green Bay Packers have thrown more touchdown passes (10) than Aaron Rodgers has (8). The Rams are allowing more yards a game (397) than they’re producing (391).

The only exception to this has been the Buffalo Bills. After losing in Week 1 at home to Pittsburgh, they’ve outscored their opponents 118-21. They still beat up people the old-fashioned way, but for a lot of the teams getting the tout as being Super Bowl contenders thanks to their offenses, their own prowess is coming back to roost on their defenses.

The longstanding tradition of stacking your lineup against the dregs of the league will likely never go away. But with the aggressive offenses that are reaching the top, more people should be looking at when are the Chiefs, Bucs or Cowboys coming to town.

Here is the Week 5 Fantasy Market Report.

Fantasy Football Risers

RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Atlanta Falcons

Patterson has never lived up to being a regular in fantasy lineups (at least those who aspire to win), because he’s never deserved to be. He’s bounced around the league and may have finally found his spot. Known more as the most dangerous kick returner in the game, he’s become the main scoring threat in Atlanta. He’s second on the team in receptions (18). But, Matt Ryan has thrown eight touchdown passes and four have been to Patterson. He also is second on the team in rushing (27-119) and has their only rushing touchdown. And he can still return kicks 109 yards to get you needle-in-the-haystack points. When one offense has nine touchdowns and one guy has five of them, you should want that guy.

TE Dawson Knox, Buffalo Bills

Is Knox the Robert Tonyan of 2021? When evaluating the talent of the Buffalo pass game, Knox doesn’t come to mind, because he has just 15 catches for 144 yards. But, in his last three games, he has scored four touchdowns. When Josh Allen gets to the red zone, Knox is clearly his first choice, because he has scored one more touchdown than Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley and Emmanuel Sanders combined.

WR D.J. Moore, Carolina Panthers

He doesn’t get mentioned a lot among the discussion of the league’s elite wide receivers, but few have been the sole focus of their QB. Sam Darnold is cocked and locked on Moore. He has double the targets of any other Panthers receiver, has caught 30 passes, including eight each in the last three games. His low-water mark for receptions and yards is six and 79, respectively. He’s been a fantasy scoring machine and still seems to be slightly flying under the radar for what he has accomplished.

[lawrence-related id=460882]

TE Dalton Schultz, Dallas Cowboys

The thing about tight ends in TE-mandatory leagues is that you have your handful of guys who are deemed to be elite, and then you have guys that get taken because they’re viewed as “red zone guys.” The Tonyan experience. Every few years, a pedestrian tight end catches lightning in a bottle with his quarterback and breaks out. Andrew Luck was really good at finding those guys. Schultz emerged last season when the ordained heir to the Jason Witten throne (Blake Jarwin) went down with injury. Jarwin is back but still an afterthought. He has been targeted just 12 times, catching nine of them. Schultz has been targeted 23 times and has caught 20 of them for 201 yards and three touchdowns. He’s gaining steam as the season goes on. In his last two games, he has caught 12 passes for 138 yards and three TDs – numbers that would surpass many of the big-name tight ends. He has Dak Prescott’s confidence. That’s worth something in fantasy football.

WR Diontae Johnson, Pittsburgh Steelers

I think everyone is in agreement that it may be time for Ben Roethlisberger to throw in the Terrible Towel and limp off into the sunset. But, aside from being a difficult “Wheel of Fortune” answer because of having every vowel in his first name, Johnson is tearing it up. He’s played only three games but has nine receptions of two them — 92- and 105-yard outings — and a touchdown in the other one. He has consistently brought fantasy owners to the pay window while JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool lag well behind. It’s time to be jump off the Steelers bandwagon, but Johnson may be the exception to the rule.

Fantasy Football Fallers

TE George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

Kittle has never been known as a huge touchdown scorer. His fantasy value has always been tied to receptions and yardage. He has neither this season. He hasn’t scored a touchdown – not a huge surprise given his career penchant for droughts – but he has four receptions in three of his four games and 40 yards or less in two of those. Those who have Kittle on their roster came into with the knowledge he won’t score 10 TDs, but there was a legitimate expectation for 100 receptions. You don’t get there when you’re collecting them four at a time.

QB Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints

In Week 1, Winston seemed to pound a stake into the heart of Drew Brees with a five-touchdown beatdown of the Packers. Since then? Not much. Through four games, he has thrown for 613 yards and provided little in the run game. It’s time to jump off any hope the Winston train will roll again.

RB Miles Sanders, Philadelphia Eagles

Sanders was brought onto rosters to be an every-week starter. He has yet to score a touchdown, and his rushing numbers gave gone down quickly and steadily (74-55-27-13). He has fewer rushing yards than his quarterback and fewer receptions than his backup. These are hard times for Sanders, and it doesn’t look to be getting any better, barring a significant change of course offensively.

WR Courtland Sutton, Denver Broncos

The fantasy football world has been waiting to see what Denver could have in the receiver tandem of Sutton and Jerry Jeudy. Last year, they were denied because Sutton was injured. This year, they’ve been denied because Jeudy is hurt. Sutton has yet to score a touchdown and, with the exception of roasting Jacksonville (who doesn’t?) in his other three games, he has nine catches for 98 yards and no touchdowns. That gets old in a hurry.

TE Robert Tonyan, Green Bay Packers

He was the golden boy last year and has just eight catches for 74 yards and a touchdown through four games – a standard daily stat line for guys like Kelce. He is one-trick pony. Last year, it was a great trick. This year? Not so much. If you aren’t supplying the bread, there’s no need for butter.
