63 days until Browns season opener: 5 players to wear 63 in Cleveland

The countdown is now at 63 days

With just 63 days remaining in the countdown to Cleveland Browns football, we are also less than two weeks from the start of training camp. Next month the team will watch as former offensive linemen Joe Thomas is inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. In total 15 different players have worn the number 63 during the regular season for the Browns, most notably guard Joe Andruzzi.

However, the number has not been worn in the regular season for the team since 2020. Undrafted free agent pass rusher Lonnie Phelps will wear the number in training camp. Let’s take a look at five of the players that have worn the number for the Browns.

Broncos now have 6 players on COVID-19 reserve

Broncos DL Mike Purcell, OLB Andre Mintze, DL Jonathan Harris, C Lloyd Cushenberry, ILB Barrington Wade and OT Drew Himmelman are in COVID-19 protocol.

The Denver Broncos added three more players to their COVID-19 reserve list on Monday, the team announced.

The Broncos placed defensive lineman Mike Purcell and outside linebacker Andre Mintze on the Reserve/COVID-19 list for active roster players and Denver also placed defensive end Jonathan Harris on the Practice Squad/COVID-19 list.

Purcell and Mintze joined center Lloyd Cushenberry on the active roster reserve list and Harris joined linebacker Barrington Wade and offensive tackle Drew Himmelman on the practice squad reserve list.

If the players are vaccinated, NFL rules would allow them to return in time for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers if they test negative.

The Broncos also released center Javon Patterson from the practice squad on Monday. Patterson was signed on Saturday to provide emergency depth at center after Cushenberry was placed in COVID-19 protocol.

The NFL has been hit hard by positive COVID cases in recent weeks. Denver specifically has had 19 players test positive since October.

Broncos made 6 roster moves Tuesday

Broncos GM George Paton was busy on Tuesday, making six transactions.

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton has been busy. After completing two trades in recent days, Paton made six more transactions on Tuesday.

Broncos sign two offensive linemen to practice squad

With Dalton Risner and Graham Glasgow both injured, the Broncos brought in Harry Crider and Javon Patterson to provide more depth.

The Denver Broncos have signed offensive linemen Harry Crider and Javon Patterson to their practice squad, the team announced Wednesday. Both players can play either as a guard or as a center.

Crider (6-4, 311 pounds) is an undrafted rookie out of Indiana with spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. Patterson (6-3, 305 pounds) is a former seventh-round pick out of Ole Miss who has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns since 2019.

This might be a sign that injured guards Graham Glasgow and Dalton Risner are unlikely to be available for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

If Glasgow and Risner can’t play this weekend, Netane Muti and Quinn Meinerz would start in their place. Crider and Patterson are candidates to provide more depth at guard.

The Broncos had room for Crider and Patterson on the practice squad after cutting outside linebacker Pita Taumoepenu last week and promoting quarterback Brett Rypien to the active roster this week.

The 16-player practice squad is now full.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.

Browns practice for 1st time all week but have another positive COVID-19 test

Jovante Moffatt is the latest Browns player to test positive

Friday brought good news and bad news to the Cleveland Browns.

The good news: the Browns were able to practice for the first time in more than a week. Cleveland’s training facility was allowed to open and the team convened together for the first time since Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh at FirstEnergy Stadium. It’s the only practice the Browns get before facing the Steelers in Heinz Field this Sunday night in the wild-card round.

The bad news: the Browns had yet another player test positive for COVID-19 during Friday’s testing. Safety Jovante Moffatt tested positive and has been placed on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list. Moffatt, an undrafted rookie, has played almost exclusively on special teams.

The Browns did activate center Javon Patterson from the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list. Patterson goes back onto the practice squad and can be elevated for Sunday’s game, if needed.

Browns place B.J. Goodson on the reserve/ COVID-19 list, activate Jedrick Wills

Goodson is the team’s leading tackler

The Cleveland Browns will get a big boost on their offensive line tomorrow while also losing a key starter on defense.

The Browns have placed starting linebacker B.J. Goodson on the reserve/COVID-19 list, according to a report from NFL Network. Earlier today, the team announced the facility was closed and the team’s flight to New York was delayed for contact tracing following the positive test.

Although the defense will lose Goodson, the Browns get back starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday morning.

Goodson has started all 14 games for the Browns this season and accounted for a career-high 91 tackles. The defensive signal-caller has also accounted for a pair of interceptions and two tackles for loss.

Wills has started every game at left tackle during his rookie season campaign.

In an additional move, the Browns elevated center Javon Patterson from the practice squad as a COVID-19 replacement. Patterson is a second-year player out of Ole Miss and was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 10.

The Browns are set to kick-off tomorrow against the Jets at MetLife Stadium at 1 p.m.

Giants sign Rysen John, Montre Hartage to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed TE Rysen John and DB Montre Hartage to their practice squad.

The New York Giants have decided to bring back project tight end Rysen John after waiving him earlier this year with an injury settlement.

The 6-foot-7, 237-pound John sports a unique blend of size and speed, posting a 4.60 40-yard dash prior to the 2020 NFL Draft.

John, a Canadian import, was also selected in Round 3 of the 2020 CFL Draft, but decided to give it a go with the Giants instead. And the Giants were certainly intrigued by the potential of the wide receiver convert, but a hamstring injury slowed that progress,

In addition to John, the Giants are also re-signing defensive back Montre Hartage to their practice squad.

Like John, Hartage was waived with an injury settlement back in September, but is now cleared to re-join the team.

Hartage originally signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted rookie out of Northwestern in 2019 and was added to their practice squad after failing to make the 53-man rosters. He was promoted to the active roster on December 1 and appeared in four games, recording eight tackles and one pass defensed.

Now in his return, the 6-foot, 190-pound Hartage will once again reunite with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

To clear room on the practice squad, the Giants terminated the contract of center Javon Patterson.

Giants place Sterling Shepard on IR, officially sign Devonta Freeman

The New York Giants have officially signed RB Devonta Freeman and placed WR Sterling Shepard (toe) on injured reserve.

The New York Giants officially announced the signing of running back Devonta Freeman on Wednesday, which comes on the heels of Saquon Barkley being lost for the season due to an ACL tear.

Prior to the Giants’ announcement, Freeman confirmed his arrival in East Rutherford on Twitter.

In addition to signing Freeman, the Giants also announced that wide receiver Sterling Shepard was placed on injured reserve with turf toe. That means he will miss a minimum of three games before he can be re-activated to the 53-man roster.

Shepard had hauled in eight receptions (on 10 targets) for 76 yards and four first downs before suffering his injury in Week 2.

Finally, the Giants also announced that center Javon Patterson, who was a seventh-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2019, has been signed to their practice squad.

5 under-the-radar Colts to watch at training camp

These Colts are flying under the radar entering camp.

The Indianapolis Colts officially begin their strength and condition portion of training camp as the ramp-up period gets underway. While the next month will be unique in terms of recent years, there are still players to keep an eye on.

Throughout the offseason, there have been players who are mentioned more than others. Maybe they are bouncing back from injury or they are a new piece joining the team at an important position. But then there are those who are flying under the radar.

They might not get as much coverage as other players, but they should still be monitored as training camp commences.

Here are five under-the-radar Colts to watch at training camp:

WR Ashton Dulin

With T.Y. Hilton returning, Michael Pittman Jr. joining as a second-round pick and Parris Campbell hoping to bounce back from an injury-riddled rookie campaign, there hasn’t been a whole lot of talk about the rest of the room. And while the competition for the final spot on the wide receiver depth chart features a few names, Dulin is flying under the radar.

The second-year wideout will be competing for one of the final spots in the room and while other names like Marcus Johnson and Daurice Fountain get all of the attention, Dulin shouldn’t be cast aside immediately.

Dulin has an impressive athletic profile to warrant consideration for the final spot in the room but he also has an advantage given that he can work on special teams. He played 172 special teams snaps (42%) in 2019, and that could give him a leg up in the competition.

The favorites might be Johnson and Fountain, but don’t sleep on Dulin when the competition begins.
