Commanders sign 9 players to reserve/future contracts

Troy Apke was among those signed to a reserve/future contract.

As is customary when the NFL season ends, teams sign players to reserve/future contracts before heading into the offseason.

The Washington Commanders signed nine players Monday to reserve/future contracts, including cornerback Troy Apke, quarterback Jake Fromm and wide receiver Alex Erickson.

Here is the complete list:

  • CB Troy Apke
  • DE William Bradley-King
  • WR Alex Erickson
  • CB DaMarcus Fields
  • QB Jake Fromm
  • G Nolan Laufenberg
  • WR Kyric McGowan
  • T Aaron Monteiro
  • G Keaton Sutherland

Apke may have set the team record for the most transactions in one season in 2022. However, the former fourth-round pick in 2018 will get another offseason with Washington to try and earn a roster spot.

Apke isn’t the only former Washington draft pick signed to a reserve/future contract. Defensive end William Bradley-King, a seventh-round pick in 2021, was also added.

Many of the others spent time on Washington’s practice squad this season, including the veteran Erickson, who was called up to return punts in Week 13.

What exactly is a reserve/future contract?

A reserve/future contract secures the player to an NFL roster for the offseason. When the new league year begins in March, the player will then be added to the 90-man offseason roster, and the player cannot negotiate with other teams while on a reserve/future contract.

Washington signs former first-round pick to reserve/future contract

Washington signed veteran corner D.J. Hayden to a reserve/future contract Wednesday.

The Washington Football Team continues to add to the offseason roster. On Wednesday, Washington announced it had signed veteran cornerback D.J. Hayden to a reserve/future contract. Hayden is now a member of Washington’s offseason roster and will look to earn a spot on the 53-man roster in training camp.

Washington initially signed Hayden in December while the team was battling a COVID-19 outbreak. Starting cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and William Jackson III each missed time with COVID-19, and Jackson missed the season’s final three games due to injury.

Hayden was activated for two games late in the season as a COVID replacement, and he played four snaps on defense in a Week 16 loss at Dallas.

A first-round pick of the then-Oakland Raiders in 2013, the 31-year-old Hayden has spent time with the Raiders, Lions and Jaguars. Teams don’t often sign experienced veterans like Hayden to reserve/future contracts. Still, depending on what Washington does at cornerback in the offseason, he has an opportunity to make the opening-day roster. Washington opened the 2021 season with six cornerbacks, although Troy Apke was exclusively used on special teams.

Washington’s top three corners — Fuller, Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste — are all under contract for 2022.

Raiders sign 12 to reserve/future contracts

Raiders first order of business: Sign 12 to reserve/future contracts

It’s the Monday after the Raiders offseason began and therefore it’s time to take care of some business. One of the first orders of business is reserve/future deals. The Raiders announced the addition of 12 players on reserve/future deals today.

S Jordan Brown
G Lester Cotton Sr
DB Kavon Frazier
OL Hroniss Grasu
DE Gerri Green
C Brett Heggie
DL PJ Johnson
LB Justin March-Lillard
OL Jeremia Poutasi
RB Trey Ragas
WR Dillon Stoner
WR DJ Turner

Most of these deals are guys from the practice squad the Raiders want to bring back onto the offseason roster. Some are street free agents as well.

Original Raiders include Lester Cotton Sr, Trey Ragas, Dillon Stoner, and DJ Turner. All are former undrafted free agents.

Jordan Brown, Gerri Green, and Jeremiah Poutasi all spent last offseason with the Raiders as well.

The veterans of the group are Justin March-Lillard, Hroniss Grasu, and Kayvon Frazier who each have at least six years NFL experience.

Washington signs 8 players to reserve/future contacts

Washington signs eight players to reserve/future contracts Monday.

The offseason is finally here. One day after the Washington Football Team completed the 2021 NFL season, they began looking ahead to 2022.

Washington signed eight players to reserve/future contracts Tuesday, including a pair of former draft picks who’ve spent considerable time on the main roster. Here is the complete list:

  • G Zack Bailey
  • C/G Beau Benzschawel
  • G Deion Calhoun
  •  DT Tyler Clark
  • WR Antonio Gandy-Golden
  • WR Kelvin Harmon
  • G Nolan Laufenberg
  • WR Marken Michel

The most notable names from the list are Harmon and Gandy-Golden. Harmon was a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He spent the 2019 season on Washington’s roster, catching 30 passes for 365 yards. He missed all of 2020 with a knee injury. Harmon was released over the summer before re-signing with Washington’s practice squad.

Gandy-Golden was a fourth-round pick in 2020 and appeared in six games. In 2021, Gandy-Golden spent the entire season between Washington’s practice squad and active roster.

Benzschawel spent all of 2021 on Washington’s practice squad.

We’ll keep you posted on any future signings.

Browns sign 8 players to future/reserves contracts

The Cleveland Browns sign 8 practice squad players to future/reserves contracts

One of the first orders of business for NFL teams in the offseason is to handle the players who ended the season on the practice squad. Those players are not technically under contract to the team any longer.

For the practice squad players or street free agents the Cleveland Browns and other teams wish to keep around to at least start the 2022 offseason, they can sign reserve/future contracts. They are effectively commitments by the team to bring the players back with a chance to compete for spots in the coming season.

Cleveland signed eight of those to reserve/future contracts on Monday:

TE Miller Forristall

OG Hjalte Froholdt

TE Nick Guggemos

CB Nate Meadors

OG David Moore

FB Johnny Stanton

OT Alex Taylor

DE Curtis Weaver

All will be welcomed back to Cleveland once the offseason activities kick off later this winter.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.
