Former Browns players who could win rings in Super Bowl LVII

What former Browns players have a chance to win a ring tonight?

Today is the finale of the 2022 NFL season as the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs take the field in Glendale, Arizona in Super Bowl LVII. A feat the Cleveland Browns have still yet to accomplish since the inception of the Super Bowl, they are now focused on free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft. There are, however, quite a few former players who once wore the orange helmet who have a chance to win a Super Bowl ring tonight.

From a former first round pick to undrafted free agents who got cut in training camp, some of the names may come as a surprise. Which former Browns have a chance at a new piece of jewelry tonight?

Chiefs TE Jordan Franks placed on practice squad IR, TE Kendall Blanton signed

Former #Rams TE Kendall Blanton is back on the #Chiefs’ practice squad after TE Jordan Franks broke his hand in practice.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made some moves on the practice ahead of Week 12 involving the tight end position, bringing back a familiar face.

According to Andy Reid, the team has re-signed former Rams TE Kendall Blanton to the practice squad. This move comes after TE Jordan Franks was placed on the practice squad injured list.

“We brought (Kendall) Blanton back to the practice squad,” Reid said. “We put Jordan Franks on the practice squad injured list. He’s got a broken hand. It happened in practice.”

Blanton, a Kansas City native whose father played for the Chiefs, is a player that Brett Veach had an eye on at a few different junctures this season. When the Rams first waived him ahead of the season, the Chiefs attempted to claim him on waivers. He ended up with the Washington Commanders, but he was released during roster cuts. The Chiefs then added him to the practice squad, but a suspension to Rams TE Brycen Hopkins saw Los Angeles poach him from the Chiefs’ practice squad in late September.

This was some convenient timing for Kansas City with Franks’ hand injury as Blanton was waived from the L.A. practice squad on Tuesday. He’ll fall into that backup tight end role both on offense and special teams for the three players at the position on the Chiefs’ active roster.

Browns release TE Jordan Franks, add cornerback to practice squad

Franks was elevated and played Sunday but released today. Does adding a corner to the practice squad mean anything about Newsome’s injury?

The Cleveland Browns made a move on Tuesday to continue their shakeup at the bottom of their roster. General manager Andrew Berry and company have continued to make changes to bot their 53-man roster as well as their practice squad through the first few weeks of the season.

We do not expect that to change.

Tuesday’s move comes as a bit of a surprise. Sunday, the team elevated tight end Jordan Franks to their active roster for their game against the Chicago Bears. Franks played in nine snaps on offense and 11 on special teams in the Browns Week 3 victory.

The team released Franks from the practice squad on Tuesday.

In his place, the Browns added cornerback Herb Miller. Miller was on the Tampa Bay practice squad and active roster in 2020. He finished the season with five tackles, an interception and a pass breakup.

Miller was released from the Bucs practice squad a week ago.

An undrafted free agent, the Browns new cornerback is 6’2″ with good length. His athletic scores were not great coming out of Florida Atlantic but he does have some short-area quickness to go along with his size.

With the status of starter Greg Newsome II still unknown after a calf injury Sunday, Cleveland expects Greedy Williams to step into the starter role if needed. Miller joins Tim Harris, another 6’2″ corner, on the practice squad and is able to be called up, as Franks was, if the Browns need reinforcements for a game.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.

Browns add TE Jordan Franks, OT Timon Parris to practice squad

Both new players have ties to Browns coaches

The Browns filled a couple of vacant positions on the team’s practice squad on Tuesday. Cleveland announced it has signed tight end Jordan Franks and offensive tackle Timon Parris to the 16-man practice squad.

They had an unexpected opening when the Cowboys signed QB Garrett Gilbert away before the team could slap the protected label on the veteran once again.

Franks and Parris are both familiar players for a Browns coach.

Franks played in Cincinnati under Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt in 2018-2019. Most of that time was spent on the Bengals’ practice squad, but the Central Florida product did haul in two receptions for 37 yards in six total games in his rookie campaign.

Parris was on the Washington Football Team in 2018-2019, where he was coached by now-Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan. The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder also spent time with the Atlanta Falcons. He entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie from Stony Brook in 2018.

Eagles to sign TE Jordan Franks to their practice squad

Jordan Franks to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to sign tight end Jordan Franks to their 16 man practice squad according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle.

Franks signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2018, failing to make the Bengals’ 53-man roster out of training camp and was subsequently signed to the team’s practice squad.

During his rookie season, Franks played in six games with two receptions for 37 yards and one tackle on special teams.

Franks was waived during the Bengals final roster cut.

Franks’ younger brother, Feleipe, is a former starting quarterback for the University of Florida and currently a quarterback for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.
