Chicago Bears 2023 training camp preview: Safety

Up next in our Bears position previews is safety, led by the formidable duo of Jaquan Brisker and Eddie Jackson.

Chicago Bears training camp is just around the corner, so it’s time to start looking ahead at the roster the team is bringing to Lake Forest.

We’re unveiling our Bears 2023 training camp position previews, breaking down every player by position and examining the group’s biggest question.

Rounding out the defense is the safety position, which looked vastly improved in 2022 thanks to rookie Jaquan Brisker and a return to form for veteran Eddie Jackson.

Brisker and Jackson once again are leading the way, but a couple of young players such as Elijah Hicks and Kendall Williamson could show something in camp as reserves.

Here’s a closer look at the Bears’ safeties heading into training camp:

Bears signing veteran safety Adrian Colbert

With Eddie Jackson sidelined with a Lisfranc injury, the Bears are signing safety Adrian Colbert to the roster.

The Bears lost a key defensive player in safety Eddie Jackson, who suffered a foot injury in last Sunday’s loss to the Jets. Jackson suffered an apparent Lisfranc injury, according to NFL Network.

With Jackson likely done for the season (with just five games left), Chicago signed veteran safest Adrian Colbert, according to his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.

Colbert, a former seventh round pick by the 49ers in 2017, has spent time with five different teams before joining the Bears. He spent his first two seasons in San Francisco, where he totaled 58 tackles, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 21 games with  12 starts. He also had stops with the  Dolphins (2019), Giants (2020), Browns (2021) and Jets (2021).

Colbert will serve as a reserve behind rookie Jaquan Brisker and DeAndre Houston-Carson, who should get the starting nod in place of Jackson.

Jackson had a bounce back season with the Bears this season, where he led the team with four interceptions. He added 80 tackles, one tackle for loss, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles in 2022.

Titans agree to terms with 2 DBs among 4 roster moves

The Titans swapped out defensive backs in four roster moves on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans announced four roster moves on Tuesday, all of which involved defensive backs.

The team announced it has signed safeties Adrian Colbert and Elijah Benton, while also waiving defensive backs Michael Griffin II and Kenneth George. Griffin was waived with an injury designation.

After being drafted in the seventh round in 2017, Colbert has appeared in 39 games (22 starts) over five seasons, playing snaps with the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns.

Benton went undrafted out of Liberty and has played in just one NFL game in his career, which came in 2020 with the Browns. He has also spent time on the practice squads of the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Jets.

Griffin was signed by Tennessee shortly after the 2022 NFL draft, while George, a former Volunteer, was inked in May.

We may get our first look at Benton and Colbert when Tennessee travels to Baltimore to take on the Ravens in their preseason opener on Thursday.

Tennessee Titans signing safety Adrian Colbert

The Titans are adding safety Adrian Colbert to their offseason roster.

The Tennessee Titans are set to add a safety to their offseason roster ahead of the first preseason game on Thursday night.

According to his agents (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter), the Titans are signing former Cleveland Browns safety Adrian Colbert to a one-year deal. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A former seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, Colbert has played in 39 games (22 starts) over five seasons in the NFL with the Niners, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets and  the Browns.

He’s also had cups of coffee with the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks.

Colbert played in six games in 2021, including four with the Jets (three starts) and two with the Browns.

It isn’t clear if Colbert’s signing means the Titans have an injury to one of their backup candidates or if they simply aren’t happy with the options they have. Regardless, the 28-year-old will be vying for a reserve role.

The New York Giants hosted veteran defensive back Adrian Colbert, who was with the team in 2020, for a visit on Friday.

The New York Giants are depleted due to injury and illness (both COVID-19 and the flu), especially in their secondary. They are currently without a number of players and scrambling to find reinforcements.

As part of that scramble, the Giants hosted free agent defensive back Adrian Colbert for a visit on Friday.

A seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL draft, Colbert has become quite the journeyman. In fact, he’s even a familiar face to the Giants, having spent the 2020 season in East Rutherford.

In addition to his time with the 49ers (2017-2018) and Giants (2020), Colbert has also had stints with the Seattle Seahawks (2019), Miami Dolphins (2019), Kansas City Chiefs (2020), New England Patriots (2021) and New York Jets (2021).

Colbert was most recently with the Jets, who released him in late October.

In 37 career games (22 starts), the 28-year-old Colbert has recorded 109 tackles (84 solo, one for a loss), two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and eight passes defensed.

Per the NFL’s transaction wire, Colbert was not immediately signed.

Broncos make several changes to practice squad

The Broncos added RB Kerrith Whyte and OT Adrian Ealy to the practice squad and released LB Curtis Robinson.

The Denver Broncos added two practice squad players and parted ways with another on Tuesday, the team announced.

Denver signed running back Kerrith Whyte and offensive tackle Adrian Ealy to the 16-player practice squad and released inside linebacker Curtis Robinson.

Cutting Robinson was a somewhat surprising move given that he was called on to play in three games this season, totaling five tackles and one quarterback hit. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the rookie out of Stanford land on another team’s practice squad.

Whyte (5-10, 204 pounds) is a second-year running back who has spent time with five NFL teams, appearing in six regular season games. He has played primarily as a returner.

Ealy (6-6, 321 pounds) is an undrafted rookie out of Oklahoma who signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May and started the season on their practice squad.

In addition to making the above transactions, the Broncos also protected offensive tackle Quinn Bailey, running back Damarea Crockett and wide receiver Seth Williams on the practice squad this week.

Denver also worked out free agent defensive back Adrian Colbert on Tuesday. Ealy worked out for the Broncos last week before joining the practice squad this week, so Colbert might be a player to keep an eye on.

Colts worked out S Adrian Colbert

Colts held a workout for S Adrian Colbert.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for veteran safety Adrain Colbert on Tuesday, per the league’s transaction wire.

With Khari Willis remaining on the injured reserve list with a calf injury and Julian Blackmon out for the season with a torn Achilles, general manager Chris Ballard will continue to keep his eyes on the safety market.

Colbert, 28, was seventh-round pick with the San Francisco 49ers during the 2017 NFL draft. He played roughly a season and a half before an ankle injury ended his campaign in 2018. He was cut before the start of the 2019 season.

Colbert spent time with the Seattle Seahawks (2019), Miami Dolphins (2019), Kansas City Chiefs (2020),  New York Giants (2020), New England Patriots (2021), New York Jets (2021) in some capacity either on the practice squad or short stints on the active roster.

In 37 career games (22 starts), Colbert has 109 tackles (84 solo), eight passes defended, two forced fumbles and one tackle for loss.

Jets waiving S Sheldrick Redwine

The Jets are waiving safety Sheldrick Redwine, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Sheldrick Redwine signing did not age well in New York.

The Jets are waiving the safety, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The decision comes a day after New York signed fellow safety Adrian Colbert off their practice squad and onto the active roster.

The Jets signed Redwine shortly after the Browns made him one of their final cuts at the end of August. Redwine had an opportunity to earn playing time after starting safety Lamarcus Joyner was lost for the season in New York’s opener against the Panthers, but he struggled in coverage and was involved in Robby Anderson’s 57-yard touchdown.

Redwine was limited to special teams this past Sunday against the Patriots. Colbert started.

A fourth-round pick in 2019, Redwine played in 27 games for Cleveland before becoming a Jet. He tallied 69 tackles, one interception, a half-sack and three defended passes with the Browns.

Jets signing S Adrian Colbert to their active roster

The Jets are signing Adrian Colbert off their practice squad and onto their active roster.

The Jets are signing Adrian Colbert off their practice squad and onto their active roster, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With the Jets short at safety, Colbert has appeared in New York’s first two games of the season. Gang Green is missing Lamarcus Joyner, Ashtyn Davis and Sharrod Neasman at the position due to injuries.

Colbert, who played under Robert Saleh in San Francisco, has eight tackles so far this season. He has played in 90 defensive snaps and contributed on special teams.

OL Isaiah Williams was released to make space for Colbert.

Jets elevate LB Del’Shawn Phillips and S Adrian Colbert from practice squad for Week 2

Adrian Colbert and Del’Shawn Phillips could see sizable roles against the Patriots after a bevy of Jets injuries.

Two Jets practice squad members are back on the active roster for Week 2.

New York promoted linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips and safety Adrian Colbert for Gang Green’s Week 2 matchup with the Patriots. Both played in the Jets’ Week 1 loss to the Panthers after injuries forced them into action.

Phillips played 57 snaps at outside linebacker against Carolina after Jamien Sherwood and Blake Cashman left with injuries. Neither will play this week, which gives Phillips the inside track to start if the Jets aren’t comfortable with recently signed B.J. Goodson just yet. Phillips ended up leading the Jets with 11 tackles.

Colbert stepped in after Lamarcus Joyner left with an injury in the first quarter and Sheldrick Redwine gave up a long touchdown to Robby Anderson in the second. He finished with three tackles in 34 snaps.
