2024 5-star DL Dominick McKinley reveals his Top 6 program list

2024 5-star DL Dominick McKinley has released his Top 6 program list and Texas A&M has made the cut.

Texas A&M’s 2024 recruiting efforts begin the weekend, as head coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff will host seven high-profile prospects, including several players predicted to land with the Maroon and White.

Outside of the prospects who have already scheduled future official visits to College Station, the “cream of the crop” members of the 2024 cycle, including five-star defensive tackle Dominick McKinley are setting the stage for their plans, as McKinley recently revealed this Top 6 program list on Wednesday, which includes Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, and of course, Texas A&M.

According to 247Sports, McKinley is positioned as the 31st-ranked player in the 2024 class, the 7th-ranked defensive line prospect, and the No.1-ranked player in Louisiana. After offering him back in late December, Texas A&M’s recent success in landing top-tier DL talent under head coach Jimbo Fisher and defensive line coach/recruiting ace Elijah Robinson has most likely played a significant role in the Aggies making the final cut.

Standing at 6-5 and 290 pounds, the incoming senior at Acadiana High School in Lafayette, Louisiana, recorded 86 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, ten sacks, and two interceptions during his 2022 junior campaign.

McKinley’s June visit schedule is packed to the rafters, though he is still set to take an official visit to Texas A&M on the weekend of June 9, joining several other key defensive prospects in the cycle.

Louisiana 5-star 2024 defense end has Ohio State in top group ahead of visit

The Buckeyes will host the 5-star on his official tomorrow #GoBucks

After last year’s disappointing finish with defense end recruiting, it’s hard to get excited for prospects that are considering [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag].

The trend needs to change and the tide could be turning in the 2024 cycle. Multiple top edge rushers are highly considering the Buckeyes and another one, Louisiana’s [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag] has included Ohio State in his top six.

The 6-foot, 7-inch and 270 pound defender is rated as the 5th best lineman and 29th overall player in the country by the 247Sports composite. He will also start his official visit schedule tomorrow, with his first stop in Columbus. Expect the scarlet carpet to be laid out for McKinley.

The official visit will go a long way with how McKinley feels about Ohio State and they have an opportunity to set the bar high.

LSU trending for top in-state prospects in 2024 recruiting class

Brian Kelly could be on his way to locking down the state of Louisiana in 2024.

Fresh off a great class in 2023, LSU continues to build momentum in 2024.

Part of that is due to all the success LSU is having within its home state. The difference between LSU’s classes being good versus great often comes down to how many of Louisiana’s top prospects end up in Baton Rouge. Right now, everything is trending in the right direction on that front.

According to On3, LSU’s class is currently 11th in the country, but several of LSU’s top targets are yet to commit.

The most notable in-state target could be defensive lineman [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag]. He sits 20th overall in On3’s industry rankings. The site gives LSU an 82% chance of landing the star defensive tackle.

247Sports also has McKinley as a five-star and the top player in the state.

Other in-state names to know include LB [autotag]Tylen Singleton[/autotag] and CB [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag]. Both defenders are at positions of need for LSU and would be significant additions to the class.

No reason to worry about Oklahoma Sooners 2024 recruiting

Despite missing out on a four-star defensive lineman, the Oklahoma Sooners are still on track to have a fantastic recruiting class in 2024.

This time a year ago, think pieces were written wondering if the Oklahoma Sooners had a problem on the recruiting trail.

Fast forward to February of this year, and [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his staff had the last laugh, pulling in the No. 4 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite.

One would think the way the 2023 recruiting cycle turned out, there would be a little more faith and a little more patience. But after Xadavien Sims committed to the Oregon Ducks, the same questions about the Sooners on the recruiting trail emerged.

On June 1, 2022, the Oklahoma Sooners had four players committed to the 2023 recruiting class. One of those players was a holdover from the Lincoln Riley era, [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag]. Another was Brent Venables’ first commitment, [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], who pledged to the Sooners in January of 2022. Of the four players committed to the Sooners, only Arnold was a four- or five-star prospect. At the time, Arnold was still a four-star prospect in the cycle.

As of May 23, 2023, the Oklahoma Sooners have six players committed to the 2024 recruiting cycle. Of those six players, four are blue-chip prospects:[autotag] Zion Kearney[/autotag], [autotag]Jeremiah Newcombe[/autotag], [autotag]Jaydan Hardy[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag].

Relative to the 2023 recruiting cycle, Oklahoma Sooners are ahead of schedule.

Take it a year further, and the Sooners 2025 class is way ahead of schedule with commitments from four-star prospects Kevin Sperry and Gracen Harris.

Venables, his coaching staff, the scouts and the on-campus recruiting team have proven in the year and a half in Norman that they can flat-out recruit. With two top-10 classes in two years and a top-five class in 2023, of that there is no doubt.

It’s certainly a bummer to miss on a four-star defensive line prospect such as  Xadavien Sims. The kid is talented, which is why a pair of national championship-winning defensive coordinators (Venables and Dan Lanning) were pushing hard for his commitment. In particular, for Oklahoma, missing on one of the top prospects in the state stings a bit.

But that doesn’t mean this staff can’t recruit. They’re still in a great place for  2024 five-star defensive linemen [autotag]David Stone[/autotag] and [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag], in addition to talented four-star prospects [autotag]Nigel Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Joseph Jonah-Ajonye[/autotag]. They’ve also thrown their hat in the ring for five-star defensive lineman [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag].

The Sooners have laid the groundwork to put together another top-five class in the 2024 cycle. As we saw last summer, the Sooners are about to remind the college football world just how good they are at recruiting.

The summer months of June, July and August brought in 15 commitments to the Oklahoma Sooners. With the Champ U BBQ right around the corner and Oklahoma targets taking their official visits elsewhere, look for the Sooners to begin reeling in commitments as they did a year ago.

Gear up. It’s going to be another busy summer.

Recruiting Profile: 2024 5-star defensive line target Dominick McKinley

Recruiting profile of five-star defensive line prospect Dominick McKinley who holds offers from Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, and others.

Every year within a given recruiting class, different subplots help tell the story about that class. Last year for Oklahoma, it was the pursuit of multiple five-star defenders to improve the overall defensive talent. The Sooners added a big group of blue-chip defensive backs in the 2023 signing class.

This year, defense reigns supreme again, but, more specifically, the pursuit of the best defensive line class Oklahoma has had in years. The Sooners are in good position for five-star defensive line prospects David Stone and Williams Nwaneri. They’re also well-positioned in the recruitment of four-star prospects Nigel Smith, Joseph Jonah-Ajonye and Xadavien Sims.

They’re looking to build a deep defensive line that will carry the weight up front as they move into the SEC.

That starts with winning battles involving five-star defensive linemen such as [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag]. McKinley is a versatile, dominant player from Louisiana who received his offer from the Oklahoma Sooners in January. The Sooners are also pursuing Dominick’s younger brother, Darryus.

Dominick McKinley checks in at 6-foot-5 and hovers around 290 pounds. He also participates in track and field. In his junior season, he posted 86 tackles, 10 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and two interceptions. He returned one of those interceptions for a touchdown.

Per 247Sports, he is the No. 30 overall prospect, the No. 5 defensive tackle, and the No. 1 prospect in Louisiana. He has official visits scheduled with Oklahoma, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Texas.

Like the recruiting battles for the other five-star defensive linemen the Sooners are pursuing, Oklahoma will have its work cut out for it. However, with Brent Venables and Todd Bates’ track record, you can’t count the Sooners out of any defensive line recruitment until signing day.

Oklahoma trying to land a pair of brothers, offering Dominick and Darryus McKinley this spring

Dominick and Darryus McKinely both have offers from the Oklahoma Sooners. The eldest, Dominic, plans to take an official to Norman in June.

Oklahoma has the chance to have as many as four pairs of brothers on its roster in the coming years. It’s beginning to add a new meaning to the term “brotherhood” that head coach Brent Venables is working to create in Norman.

A true freshman and former five-star safety, Peyton Bowen, was one of the more high-profile signings for this roster in recent years. Peyton’s little brother plays cornerback at Denton Guyer High School. Eli Bowen holds an Oklahoma offer and could be a Sooner when his recruitment ends.

Current Sooner Dasan McCullough was a big get in the transfer portal for Brent Venables. He’ll likely start at cheetah for Oklahoma. They also added his little brother Daeh McCullough, a four-star safety in the 2023 cycle, providing a pair of athletic defenders that were essentially a package deal. They’ll both be on campus together for the first time this summer.

2024 commit Michael Hawkins’ younger brother Maliek plays defensive back and holds an offer from the Sooners. Maliek Hawkins, a 2025 prospect, is a talented, aggressive cornerback out of Frisco Emerson High School. Brent Venables’ ties to the Hawkins family run deep. He coached the brothers’ father, Mike, during his stint with the Sooners in 2002.

That brings us to the possibility another brother duo. 2024 five-star Dominick McKinley holds an offer from Oklahoma and plans to take an official visit to Norman in June. His younger brother Darryus is a 2026 defensive line prospect who also holds an offer from Oklahoma. While neither recruitment is anywhere near over, the possibility of the Sooners having another duo of brothers is incredible.

For the McKinleys, only time will tell.

Dominick is a five-star prospect on the 247Sports composite, and he hails from Louisiana. Pulling an elite defensive line prospect away from the grasp of the LSU Tigers may prove futile, but the Sooners’ defensive coaches aren’t backing down from that challenge. The eldest McKinley holds offers from Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, among others.

McKinley will be in College Station to visit the Aggies the weekend of June 9 through 11. Visits are set for Ohio State on June 2, Oklahoma on June 16, and Texas on June 23.

It will be a busy summer for the five-star prospect, who’s the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana. Oklahoma will make a strong push as they work to put together a defensive line class that can lead set them up for success with their move to the SEC on the horizon.

The possibilities of the defensive line class the Sooners could land are endless. There’s no turning back now. And if the Sooners were to land the eldest McKinley brother, it would all but put them in a very strong position to land the youngest for the class of 2026.

Report: Ohio State will host 5-star 2024 defensive tackle in June

The big defensive tackle will visit Columbus soon #GoBucks

If there is one current complaint about [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] recruiting, it’s on the defensive side of the ball.

What head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] has done amassing talent on the offensive side of the ball has been spectacular, but the same success can’t be said about the defense.

Day is trying to correct that in the 2024 cycle, and so far so good. The Buckeyes already have two commits from top 200 players with athlete Garrett Stover and linebacker Payton Pierce. The only two defensive commits are a good start, with more high-end talent potentially on the way.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

One of those targets is Louisiana defensive tackle, [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag], who according to a report by 247Sports Bill Kurelic, has scheduled an official visit to Columbus on the first weekend of June.

The Buckeyes offered the No. 30 overall player according to the 247Sports composite in February, and with the visit on tap should be looked at as a major contender for McKinley’s commitment.

LSU offers 2024 defensive lineman from Louisiana

Dominick is a versatile player who can line up at defensive end or defensive tackle.

[autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag] is a 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive lineman from the class of 2024. He is from Lafayette, Louisiana, where he plays for Acadiana High School. The Acadiana Rams finished the 2022 season 8-4 with a loss to Carencro in the second round of the Lousiana 5A state playoffs. There are currently no Crystal Ball projections for McKinley, but Houston is a 38% favorite to land him per On3.

Film Analysis: McKinley can line up as a defensive tackle or a defensive end and be very disruptive. He has more speed than you would initially think. He does a great job of shedding blocks and getting into the backfield.
