4 Studs and 1 Dud from Seahawks 38-25 win over Falcons

Who stood out in Seattle’s dominating Week 1 victory in Atlanta? Here are 4 Studs and 1 Dud from the Seahawks 38-25 win over the Falcons.

For the first time since 2013, the Seattle Seahawks have claimed a 1-0 start to the season with a road opener to kick off the year. Seattle traveled south to Atlanta and torched the Dirty Birds to the tune of 38-25 in front of a raucous crowd of artificially generated fan noise.

The game was never really as close as the final score might have indicated, as the Falcons earned a few garbage scores late with the Seahawks shifting into cruise control. Quarterback Matt Ryan had over 400 yards passing, but it was not enough to overcome a Seahawks team firing on all cylinders.

Seattle improves to a 3-2 record when playing in Atlanta in the Pete Carroll/Russell Wilson era, and as such, here are 4 Studs and only 1 Dud from the Seahawks’ hot start.

WATCH: Russell Wilson and DK Metcalf connect for Seahawks score

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson found wide receiver DK Metcalf in Atlanta for the pair’s first touchdown of the 2020 NFL regular season

The Seattle Seahawks increased their lead over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday when quarterback Russell Wilson connected with wide receiver DK Metcalf for the duo’s first touchdown of the NFL regular season.

Wilson went deep and Metcalf was able to haul in the 38-yarder for the score. Seattle’s drive went 10 plays for 75 yards and took 5:19 off the clock.

After the TD, Seattle took a 21-12 lead over Atlanta, but there would be more touchdowns to come . . .

DK Metcalf praised by teammates and coaches ahead of 2020 season

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf received praise from QB Russell Wilson and OC Brian Schottenheimer ahead of the 2020 season.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf continues to receive praise from his teammates and coaches as he heads into his sophomore season in the NFL.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has already given Metcalf the green light to critique and mentor some of his fellow players on offense and stated that he has earned the right to do so after his stellar rookie season.

”He’s earned the right to speak up more,” Schottenheimer told the Associated Press. ”Our guys on offense respect him and he’s earned that right to call guys out, and try to bring them along. And if the tempo is maybe down in practice he’s earned that right. We need his voice in that regard. That’s how much I respect him as a football player, and as a worker.”

Schottenheimer went on to commend Metcalf’s work ethic, stating that he takes something away from every single shortcoming and uses it to improve his game to be the best player he can possibly be.

”He’s obviously tremendously talented, but I mean this guy is an unbelievable worker,” Schottenheimer said. “He wants to be great. I mean he wants to be one of the best of all time. He doesn’t win every matchup. But when he doesn’t win the matchup, he takes it personally and he doesn’t shy away, he wants to jump back up there.”

Metcalf was often overlooked prior to his rookie season, but soon quelled doubts about his route-running. He now has expectations on him to make a second-year jump as one of the key cogs in the Seahawks offense in 2020. Time will tell if he will answer the call, but it will certainly be exciting to watch.

Why Josh Gordon could be Seahawks No. 3 receiver in 2020

The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed wide receiver Josh Gordon, who could make a huge impact in 2020 if he is reinstated into the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks and wide receiver Josh Gordon have come to an agreement – the veteran has signed with Seattle to return to the Seahawks roster in 2020 should he be reinstated into the National Football League.

Seattle could use all the help it can get in the receiving department this season as quarterback Russell Wilson makes his push for the league’s Most Valuable Player. Once known mostly as a run-first offense, Wilson and the Seahawks are throwing the ball more and more. Re-enter Flash Gordon.

The Seahawks are likely set at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, but the third position is wide open for the taking and Gordon is just the man to slide right in.

Gordon played five games for Seattle last season (with only one start) and while his numbers weren’t mind-boggling (seven receptions for 139 yards), everyone who has ever heard his name knows exactly what Gordon is capable of achieving – including coach Pete Carroll, who has been open to Gordon’s return.

“Josh did a really good job with us last year, he fit in really well,” Carroll said during a Zoom press conference early in August. “He was part of this team, by the way we opened and embraced his coming to us, but also by the way he attacked it. So we are very open to that thought and we’ll see what happens.”

Gordon once led the NFL in total receiving yards back in 2013 but it’s not his ability to perform on the field that’s at issue. After numerous suspensions by the league, many wonder if Gordon is up to the task of playing is straight. He applied for reinstatement in June and is still waiting on a decision from the NFL.

With Seattle’s receiving corps – including Phillip Dorsett II – a little banged up, a healthy Gordon would be a huge boost for the Seahawks.

Seahawks TE Greg Olsen reminded once again he’s no ‘spring chicken’

Seattle Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen, 14-year-veteran of the NFL, will have played with DK Metcalf and his father, Terrence Metcalf.

Seattle Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen is busy adjusting to life on a new team, working through first a virtual offseason and then padded practices during training camp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

And all the while, the 14-year-veteran is constantly reminded (in the nicest of ways) that he’s no longer a youngster in the league.

“Every time someone brings it up, it just reminds me that I’m not a spring chicken anymore,” Olsen said during his appearance on Inside Training Camp Live. “I’ve been doing this a long time.”

Olsen was referring to the fact that he played with DK Metcalf’s father, Terrence, in Chicago the two seasons they were together on the Bears’ roster in 2007 and 2008. He is now catching passes alongside the younger Metcalf in Seattle.

“I got to catch up with DK’s dad Terrence just a couple weeks ago,” Olsen explained. “DK and I ran some routes before we started back up and his dad was in town and we got to visit and spend some time . . . It’s a pretty cool thing. I take some pride in it, knowing that it’s not easy to stick around in this league a long time but it’s definitely a reminder that sometimes it’s hard keeping up with these young guys.”

“absolutely attacks his job,” according to Brian Schottenheimer.

The praise just keeps getting heaped on Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf ahead of this second season in the NFL. The latest compliments come from none other than his offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, who spoke to the media Tuesday before practice.

“This guy is a tireless worker,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s obviously tremendously talented, but I mean this guy is an unbelievable worker. He wants to be great, he wants to be one of the best of all time. He doesn’t win every matchup, but when he doesn’t win the matchup, he takes it personally, and he doesn’t shy away, he wants to jump back up there.”

Schottenheimer spoke to Metcalf’s work ethic which has really impressed this summer, following an offseason that was completely virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“This guy doesn’t take any plays off,”Schottenheimer continued. “I mean this guy absolutely attacks his job. He just attacks it. The look in his eye, the way he works has been pretty awesome.”

Metcalf is expected to be on full display for Schottenheimer and the rest of the Seahawks coaching staff during Wednesday’s mock game, the second of the summer.

Quinton Dunbar: DK Metcalf ‘looks like Julio Jones out there’

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar stated that wide receiver DK Metcalf is looking like Atlanta Falcons wideout Julio Jones.

[jwplayer QZopmiKN]

The Seattle Seahawks have had contact practices for a week now and none of the team’s players have been confirmed to have contracted COVID-19. With a lack of reps due to the drama surrounding his former legal issues, cornerback Quinton Dunbar has been an mostly a observer in training camp. He recently told reporters that he is particularly impressed with second-year wide receiver DK Metcalf.

“I haven’t been practicing too much, so I haven’t really gotten to go up against those guys,” Dunbar said during his press conference. “But watching from the sideline, Metcalf looks amazing, man – looks like Julio (Jones) out there. I’m looking forward to getting better with him and matching up with him when I do get those intensive reps.”

Metcalf heads into his second NFL season as a key target for quarterback Russell Wilson alongside Tyler Lockett while Dunbar goes into his fifth year and will be expected to help make plays for the secondary. Based on Dunbar’s description, we can assume that Metcalf will take the next step for his sophomore season.

Does Russell Wilson have his best supporting cast yet?

The Seahawks offense has quietly acquired solid talent for quarterback Russell Wilson – does Seattle now have the best supporting cast yet?

It is no secret the Seattle Seahawks are once again gunning for a trip to the Super Bowl in 2020. With one of the best quarterbacks in the league at the helm, the time is now for Seattle to make another run. However, as great as Russell Wilson is, he cannot do it alone.

The Seahawks have made solid moves to acquire talent on defense, headlined by the blockbuster acquisition of safety Jamal Adams, as well as bringing back Bruce Irvin and trading for Quinton Dunbar. But what about the offense?

Seattle has quietly assembled an offensive roster of quality players, albeit not as flashy as some fans might like. Despite the lack of media attention, the Seahawks offense has some nice pieces for Wilson to play with.

Wide receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf obviously garner most of the attention. With his elite route running and cerebral connection with Wilson, Lockett is a challenge for any defense, while Metcalf will look to build on an explosive rookie debut.

The splashiest move Seattle made was signing tight end Greg Olsen, who is itching to prove he still has more than enough gas left in the tank. Although, Olsen may not be the most exciting piece at the tight end position. Third-year pro Will Dissly is returning from injury, and while his time on an NFL field has been limited, when he has played he was an incredibly effective option for Wilson.

Fans have longed for a reliable third option for Wilson, and they may have it in former Colts and Patriots receiver Phillip Dorsett. Dorsett’s career number’s may not jump off the page, but Pete Carroll was recently lauding over how Dorsett very well may be the fastest guy the Seahawks have had in his years with the team.

The Seahawks will likely be a run-first team behind Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde, but the 12th Man has been begging for years now to “Let Russ Cook” and unleash him before it’s crunch time late. With Wilson seemingly on board with the idea, perhaps now more than ever the Seahawks need to lean on their star quarterback to set the tone in games.

Russell Wilson will have plenty of options to throw to this season

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will have plenty of options to throw to as the tight ends and running backs will also factor into the air game.

Seattle Seahawks training camp is in full swing, with the offensive and defensive players finally able to take the field together. Monday should mark the most exciting day for fans so far when the pads come on for the first time this summer.

Over the last week, it’s been obvious that quarterback Russell Wilson will have his choice of players to throw to this season, with multiple offensive options at his disposal.

Wide receiver Tyler Lockett – Wilson’s No. 1 go-to target – explained during his press conference on Friday.

“We’re starting to move people around a lot more, so you’ll never know where people are going to line up,” Lockett told reporters via Zoom. “That’s where our dangerous weapons are going be able to succeed.”

“You don’t know who we’re going to run the ball with, you don’t know who we’re going to throw the ball to – we added so many additions, and the people we added to our team are also selfless,” Lockett continued. “That’s what you have to be able to have in a team is selfless people that want each other to succeed.”

The Seahawks beefed up their tight end game with the addition of veteran Greg Olsen and the return of Will Dissly from injury. Wide receiver D.K. Metcalf is looking to shine in his sophomore season. Finally, don’t look past the running backs, who also could factor into Seattle’s receiving game this season.
