Is Bernie Kosar the best supplemental draft pick in NFL history?

With the supplemental draft on Tuesday, we take a look at the history of the event and wonder if Bernie Kosar was the best-ever selection.

The NFL supplemental draft is set to take place on Tuesday, with former Purdue wide receiver Milton Wright and former Jackson State WR Malachi Wideman entering their names. The Cleveland Browns have made two picks in the history of the supplemental draft, which began in 1977, landing quarterback Bernie Kosar (1985) and WR Josh Gordon (2012).

This has us thinking: Is Kosar the best selection ever to come out of the event? Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon thinks he may just be. Here is what Risdon had to say:

“The Cleveland Browns selected Kosar from the University of Miami (FL) in the first round of the 1985 supplemental draft. Kosar led the Browns to four postseason berths in his first six seasons.”

Risdon also listed Gordon under the honorable mention section of the article. Gordon, without a doubt, would have been the best player to ever come out of the event if he could have stayed on the field for a full career.

Could Wright or Wideman end up with the Browns? We will have our eyes peeled today.

The NFL’s Supplemental Draft is back for the first time since 2019

The NFL’s Supplemental Draft will return next month for the first time since 2019.

The NFL is bringing back its Supplemental Draft for the first time since 2019, per multiple reports.

After a four-year gap, NFL teams will be able to select players who are eligible for the Supplemental Draft next month in exchange for a 2024 draft pick.

This year’s Supplemental Draft will take place on Tuesday, July 11.

The draft is held for players who are not eligible for the NFL Draft for whatever reason.

Since 2011, former NFL players like wide receiver Josh Gordon, quarterback Terrelle Pryor, offensive tackle Isaiah Battle and cornerbacks Adonis Alexander and Sam Beal have been selected in the process.

The last NFL Supplemental Draft in 2019 saw the Arizona Cardinals select safety Jalen Thompson with a fifth-round pick. The selection worked out for Arizona, as Thompson signed a contract extension with the team last fall.

Players who declare for it, like with the normal draft, are not guaranteed to be selected and can sign as undrafted free agents after the process ends.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned former Purdue wide receiver Milton Wright as the only player who has been deemed eligible for this year’s Supplemental Draft class so far.

Wright was ruled academically ineligible last year and didn’t play in the 2022 season. In three prior seasons at Purdue (2019-21), he hauled in 1,325 yards and 10 touchdowns.

His junior season with the Boilermakers was his breakout, as he caught 57 passes for 732 yards and seven touchdowns.

Josh Gordon shines, scores game-winning TD in XFL Week 3

Former Titans WR Josh Gordon had a big game in XFL Week 3.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Josh Gordon is already making some noise in the XFL three games into the season, with his best game coming in Week 3 this past weekend.

Gordon and the Seattle Sea Dragons out-dueled Vic Beasley and the Vegas Vipers, winning 30-26. Gordon led the way for the Sea Dragons in receiving, with 118 yards and two scores on six receptions.

But Gordon was also responsible for the game-winning touchdown in the contest.

With one minute left in the fourth quarter, Seattle quarterback Ben DiNucci heaved a pass down the field that Gordon somehow came down with. He then proceeded to break free and take it to the house for a 65-yard score.

Here’s a look at Gordon’s first score.

Over three games in Seattle, Gordon has recorded 225 yards and three scores, with that yardage output being tops in the league. His 65-yard reception is the longest in the XFL this year, also.

As for Beasley, he recorded just one tackle in the losing effort and has seven tackles (two for loss), 0.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed thus far. His team, the Vipers, Gordon’s Sea Dragons are 1-2.

Josh Gordon’s absurd 65-yard TD for the XFL’s Sea Dragons was a thing of beauty

Is Josh Gordon back … again?

Former NFL wide receiver Josh Gordon is making the most of his time in the XFL.

After his latest attempt to make it with a pro roster with the Tennessee Titans fizzled out this past October, Gordon has been tearing it up with his first stint in the XFL with the Seattle Sea Dragons. The wideout has 343 yards and five touchdowns through three XFL games.

This past Saturday, Gordon hauled in six receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. One came on fourth down at the end of the fourth quarter and gave Seattle the victory over the Vegas Vipers.

While Gordon hasn’t been an impactful NFL player in quite some time, his XFL success hypothetically could intrigue teams to bring him in to compete in training camp.

It remains to be seen what will become of Gordon’s XFL boost, as he’s got plenty more time in the semi-pro league to show out.

He’ll be 32 by the time the 2023 NFL season kicks off, so time is ticking for him to latch on back with a pro team. However, if Gordon’s NFL career has proven anything, it’s that you can’t ever count him out.

If he wants it, yet another professional opportunity could become available.

WATCH: Ex-Patriot Josh Gordon hauls in 65-yard game-winning touchdown

Josh Gordon turned back the clock in the XFL on Saturday.

Former New England Patriots receiver Josh Gordon looked like “Flash” reincarnated in the XFL on Saturday.

He helped lead the 0-2 Seattle Sea Dragons to their first win of the season over the Vegas Vipers with a 65-yard game-winning touchdown. Make no mistake, it wasn’t just a one-and-done play, either.

Gordon dominated throughout the game by hauling in six receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. It was one of those performances that make you ponder what-if when it came to his NFL career. There was a time when Gordon was considered by many to be the best receiver in all of football.

A game-winner on a fourth-down is a remarkable feat for the former All-Pro wideout. The XFL’s existence is validated for fans getting an opportunity to still see other world-class athletes like Gordon go out there and compete.

It’s been a fun ride so far.

Josh Gordon made a spectacular play to win it for Seattle

This borders on unfairness.

The XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons earned their first win of the season on Saturday, thanks to a former NFL star.

Josh Gordon, who has had numerous suspensions during his time in the NFL, caught 6 passes for 118 yards and 2 scores. His 65-yard catch with about a minute left gave the Sea Dragons the 30-26 win over the Vegas Vipers.

The play from all sorts of angles:

Former Dallas Cowboys QB Ben DiNucci had a huge game, connecting on 29-of-37 passes for 377 yards and 4 TDs.

The Vipers’ Brett Hundley threw for 228 yards and a pair of TDs. He also rushed for 66 yards and a score in a losing cause.

WATCH: Josh Gordon scores three-point play for Sea Dragons

Josh Gordon is off to a fast pace.

Two weeks and two scoring touchdowns for a former wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns as Josh Gordon continues to show out for the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL. With new rules in the XFL, teams can opt to go for a three-point conversion after they score a touchdown from the ten-yard line. As Sea Dragons’ quarterback Ben DiNucci drops back to throw on this attempt, he finds a wide-open Gordon in the back of the endzone for the Sea Dragons. Seattle would go on to blow their lead against the St. Louis Battlehawks, dropping to 0-2 on the season, however.

WATCH: Josh Gordon catches 3-point conversion in XFL game

Teams have the option after a touchdown to line up at the 10-yard line and earn an extra three points if they successfully convert. For Seattle, Josh Gordon came up big.

“Josh Gordon with the reception, wide open in the endzone!”

No, you’re not having flashbacks to 2013. Josh Gordon is still playing football, and in Seattle no less. However, it is as a member of the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons.

In the XFL, there are a few experimental rules you won’t see in the NFL (yet) and one is a 3-point conversion. Teams have the option after a touchdown to line up at the 10-yard line and have the ability to earn an extra three points if they successfully convert. For Seattle, Josh Gordon came up big.

The play that preceded Gordon’s conversion was a 54-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Ben DiNucci to receiver Jahcour Pearson.

The Sea Dragons go into the half leading 12-8 over St. Louis, as Seattle has racked up three sacks already. Stay tuned to Seahawks Wire for coverage of the Sea Dragons and XFL all season long.

Former Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has impressive XFL debut

The former Brown impressed in week one of the XFL season.

It has been a long time since Josh Gordon lit up the NFL field in Cleveland leading the league in receiving for the Browns in 2013. Gordon is in the XFL, with the Seattle Sea Dragons now, and made his season debut on Sunday night in the final game of Week One. He totaled six receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown in the 22-18 loss to the D.C. Defenders.

Gordon could find his way back into the NFL if he can keep playing at this level in the XFL. He looked healthy and quick like his old self before his career in the NFL was derailed. He is still only 31 years old so the NFL door might not be shut on the former Browns wide receiver.
