WATCH: Chiefs DB Dicaprio Bootle makes clutch interception vs. Browns

#Chiefs DB Dicaprio Bootle made an incredible interception that turned the tide in Kansas City’s favor against the #Browns on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs comeback effort against the Cleveland Browns is in full effect as the team attempts to take a lead for the first time since the first quarter.

Veteran defensive back Dicaprio Bootle gave Kansas City a huge boost with a clutch third-quarter interception that put the Chiefs in a position to take a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Bootle’s impressive grab set up a touchdown pass from Chris Oladokun to tight end Matt Bushman that put the Chiefs ahead after they clawed their way back from a 19-point deficit earlier in the game.

Plays like this are emblematic of Bootle’s exceptional upside in Kansas City’s defense, and none have meant more to the Chiefs than this, which turned the tide of the team’s final preseason matchup.

Now, Kansas City will just have to hold on and fritter away the final 15 minutes of game time to secure their second win of the preseason.

Every Chiefs player who needs standout preseason performances to make Kansas City’s 53-man roster

Check out every #Chiefs player who needs exceptional preseason performances to warrant a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster in 2023.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL’s top team heading into the 2023 season and the competition to make their final roster is fierce. Players have done their best to prove that they are worthy of being carried onto Kansas City’s regular season roster during training camp, but the real test will start on Sunday when the Chiefs square off against the New Orleans Saints for their first preseason action.

While players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and Joe Thuney are all obvious locks to make the team, others face an uphill battle to warrant their inclusion on Kansas City’s gameday squad in September.

Guys like Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio, and Dicaprio Bootle are all on the roster bubble heading into the Chiefs’ preseason schedule, and are joined by 40 of their teammates on our list of every player who needs big-time performances to make the final cut ahead of the regular season kickoff:

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce threw punch at LB Jack Cochrane during Saturday’s practice

#Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce threw a punch at linebacker Jack Cochrane during Saturday’s practice session in St. Joseph.

After getting into it with defensive back Dicaprio Bootle at practice on Friday, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce threw a punch at linebacker Jack Cochrane after some post-play contact at workouts on Saturday.

In a video posted to Twitter by Chiefs Wire’s own Nicolas Roesch, Kelce can be seen swinging on Cochrane and exchanging words with the second-year linebacker as his temper flared following a touchdown reception.

Physicality is to be expected at training camp, and intrasquad tussles like these are common, but Kelce’s decision to throw hands was likely a step too far. The eleven-year veteran has made a living catching passes in Andy Reid’s offense, and any injury that might result from a physical altercation like this one could spell disaster for the unit.

Watch for Kelce to make things right with Cochrane after practice and throughout the rest of training camp as he looks to squash any beef he may have with the second-year linebacker.

DB Dicaprio Bootle ‘jawing’ with offense at practice, fostering camaraderie

#Chiefs defensive back Dicaprio Bootle has been smack-talking his offensive teammates at practice, to mixed but generally favorable results.

Dicaprio Bootle has one of the best names in the NFL and a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Kansas City Chiefs to boot. He has found his way onto the team’s roster in recent seasons but isn’t exactly a star on the Chiefs’ defense, and is fighting for his future in Kansas City as a third-year defensive back in an exceptionally deep secondary.

Tensions between Bootle and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce spilled over at the Chiefs’ Friday practice session after a particularly hard rep in drills ended in what looked like an intense exchange of words. @BBQChiefs on Twitter documented the incident, posting a video of the exchange to the beleaguered social media site:

A report from practice on Saturday, however, indicated that Bootle’s antagonization of the Chiefs offense seems to be in good fun when another verbal exchange with Richie James ended in a more brotherly gesture from the veteran receiver on the sideline.

Bootle is a player to watch in camp as he competes for playing time in Kansas City’s defense. Perhaps his edge at practice has been what has made him stand out to coaches, who will decide his future with the Chiefs at the end of the preseason.

These 6 Chiefs could play their way onto the 53-man roster

Our @goldmctNFL takes a look at some #Chiefs who could play their way onto the 53-man roster during training camp and the preseason.

Every year there seem to be a few players who sneak onto the Kansas City Chiefs’ 53-man roster after strong performances during training camp and the preseason.

Last season, Brett Veach indicated that four players managed to play their way onto the 53-man roster. Which players could be in line to have similar types of performances in the coming weeks and play their way onto the initial 53-man roster for the 2023 NFL season?

We’ll take a look at a few key candidates down below:

Chiefs to re-sign CB Dicaprio Bootle to practice squad

A whirlwind few days for CB Dicaprio Bootle, who is now back with the #Chiefs on the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to re-sign one of their own on the practice squad.

It was a whirlwind weekend for Dicaprio Bootle. He was signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Saturday, he played in the Week 6 game against the Bills, and he was waived from the 53-man roster on Monday. He’s now back with the team on the practice squad after clearing waivers on Tuesday.

The second-year cornerback out of Nebraska played one defensive snap in place of Jaylen Watson against the Bills. He also played seven special teams snaps during the course of the game.

Bootle had just one practice squad elevation remaining for the 2022 NFL season, which is part of the reason why they signed him to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game. It was clear they envisioned him as the next man up at the cornerback position over players like Nazeeh Johnson and Chris Lammons. He has the flexibility to play both the nickel corner spot and outside. With the team shorthanded due to Rashad Fenton’s hamstring injury, it was important that he was up for the Week 6 game.

The fact that Bootle is no longer on the 53-man roster should provide a bit of optimism that either Fenton or even Trent McDuffie should be back in the lineup for Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Chiefs make several roster moves ahead of Week 6 vs. Bills

The #Chiefs have placed DT Tershawn Wharton on injured reserve and signed CB Dicaprio Bootle to the 53-man roster. They’re also elevating two players from the practice squad for Week 6.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a few roster moves ahead of their Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills.

In an expected move, the Chiefs placed DT Tershawn Wharton on injured reserve. Wharton suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 5 against the Las Vegas Raiders. They made a transaction earlier this week to sign Taylor Stallworth to the 53-man roster from the practice squad, who will likely replace Wharton in the defensive line rotation.

Taking the spot on the 53-man roster vacated by Wharton is CB Dicaprio Bootle. The undrafted free agent corner out of Nebraska was running out of practice squad elevations, so it makes sense to sign him to the 53-man roster. He was elevated to the 53-man roster in Week 2 and Week 3, primarily playing special teams snaps. He has recorded just one assisted tackle on special teams this season.

For the first time in several weeks, the Chiefs are not elevating a kicker from the practice squad. Harrison Butker has returned to the lineup, which means Matthew Wright will remain inactive and on the practice squad. If Butker suffers a setback during the game, it’ll be S Justin Reid who is called upon to replace him.

The two players the team elevated from the practice squad this week are S Zayne Anderson and LB Cole Christiansen.

Anderson is being elevated to the 53-man roster for the first time this season. The former undrafted free agent was last signed to the 53-man roster in December of 2021, appearing in four regular season games and playing 62 snaps on special teams. Unless there are injuries during the game at cornerback and safety, it’s a safe bet that both Bootle and Anderson will primarily be used on special teams in Week 6.

This is Christiansen’s first time playing with the team since signing to the practice squad back in September. With Elijah Lee running into a similar problem to Bootle with practice squad elevations, Christiansen gets the call-up this week. He’ll likely be called upon to play special teams in place of Lee this week.

As we reported earlier, CB Trent McDuffie was not activated to the 53-man roster from injured reserve. He will not play during Week 6.

Huskers in the NFL: Week 3

The NFL season is now officially in full swing after three weeks and this most recent slate of games delivered on drama (or not if you’re a fan of watching a scoring shootout in prime time). With the Nebraska Cornhuskers on bye in Week 4 of the college football season, Husker fans got to enjoy seeing some former stars in the red and white play at the next level.

15 players who spent their college career at Nebraska saw action in the NFL this week. 5 additional former Huskers are on practice squads (Ben Stille, Carlos Davis, Devine Ozigbo, Austin Allen and Khalil Davis) and two more have yet to play in the 2022-23 season due to injury. Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt is on Cincinnati’s IR and offensive lineman Nick Gates is on the New York Giants’ Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Lavonte David and Randy Gregory led the way with big defensive performances but read below to see how all the former Huskers fared in Week 3 of the NFL season:

Chiefs elevate two practice squad players for Week 3 vs. Colts

The #Chiefs have officially elevated two players from the practice squad ahead of the team’s Week 3 game against the #Colts.

The Kansas City Chiefs have used a standard elevation on two practice squad players ahead of their Week 3 game against the Indianapolis Colts per the NFL’s daily personnel notice.

With Harrison Butker ruled out for the second consecutive week, the Chiefs will turn to practice squad kicker Matt Ammendola again. He made two short field goals and was 3-of-3 on extra points attempts in Week 2 against the Chargers. Dave Toub seems to feel comfortable with Ammendola this week, especially being that they’re playing in a dome.

“Yeah, we’re indoors, wind’s not a factor,” Toub said on Thursday. “You know, Ammendola’s kicked – like I said in the workout – he kicked a 56-yarder. He kicked a 60-yarder at the stadium that day and yesterday he kicked a 53 in a two-minute situation. He’s got the range; he can do it. We have full confidence in him. Now he’s got a lot more reps with those guys (James Winchester and Tommy Townsend) so he’s feeling a little more comfortable.”

The Chiefs also chose to bring up CB Dicaprio Bootle from the practice squad for the second consecutive week. He played just 11 snaps on special teams in Week 2, but no snaps on the defensive side of the ball.

Here is a reminder of how the NFL’s practice squad elevations work this season:

“Teams can promote up to two players per week from the practice squad to the active roster via standard elevation (bringing the 53-man roster to 55 players). These players can be elevated three times during the course of the season, reverting to the practice squad the following week. They are not subject to waivers when they revert back to the practice squad. NFL teams must decide to elevate players by 3:00 p.m. CT the day before a game is played.”

Arizona Cardinals Work Out Former Nebraska DB Dicaprio Bootle

The Arizona Cardinals worked out a former Nebraska Cornhuskers DB.

On September 6, the Arizona Cardinals worked out former Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive back Dicaprio Bootle per the NFL transaction wire. The Cardinals also worked out two other defensive backs: Troy Pride and Corey Ballentine.

Bootle played four seasons for the Cornhuskers (2017-2020). In his college career, he recorded 110 total tackles, 26 passes defended, and one interception.

Bootle was named Nebraska’s Defensive Back of the Year in 2018 and 2019. He was a team captain in 2020.

He was not selected in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Kansas City Chiefs signed him as an undrafted free agent. In 2021, he appeared in three games recording eight combined tackles.

The Chiefs waived Bootle on August 30, 2022.
