Is Dane Jackson the favorite to be Panthers’ CB2 in 2024?

The Athletic’s Joe Person believes the Panthers will give free-agent signee Dane Jackson a chance to win the CB2 job this season.

When it comes to who will start opposite of Jaycee Horn in the Carolina Panthers secondary this season, the answer may already be on the roster.

All things considered, president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan set his Panthers up quite nicely during the transition from free agency to the 2024 draft. The front office filled a handful of pressing needs—signing guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis, trading for former Pro Bowl wideout Diontae Johnson and convincing pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney to come home—in allowing them to pick the best players available later this month.

But what about the cornerback position? Not only did Carolina ship off a longtime starter in Donte Jackson, but they also added just one player to the mix—Dane Jackson.

But according to Joe Person of The Athletic, Jackson may be all the Panthers need to fill the CB2 spot. In his latest seven-round mock draft, Person notes that the team will give the free-agent signee “a chance to win” the starting spot.

That may not be a shock considering Morgan’s history with Jackson, whom he “pounded the table for” a few years back. While serving as the director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills, Morgan pushed for the selection of the Pittsburgh corner in the seventh round of the 2020 draft.

Since then, Jackson has recorded 28 starts over his 52 NFL outings.

Other than Jackson, the current depth chart has a handful of more inexperienced options for the outside. Discounting Troy Hill—who will man the nickel—the Panthers could look to D’Shawn Jamison, Dicaprio Bootle and Lamar Jackson.

Panthers designate Jeremy Chinn to return from injured reserve

The Panthers have designated S Jeremy Chinn to return from injured reserve.

Well, at least the Carolina Panthers experienced a bit of good news on the injury front this afternoon.

Shortly after placing both starting right guard Austin Corbett and cornerback Dicaprio Bootle on injured reserve, the Panthers announced that they have designated safety Jeremy Chinn to return from the shelf. Chinn, who’s working his way back from a quadriceps injury, is now eligible to practice and will have 21 days to get back to the active roster.

Chinn was moved to injured reserve back on Oct. 24, alongside outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos and tight end Giovanni Ricci. He has since missed the last four games.

Unfortunately for Chinn, he was not heavily featured in the six games he did play in—at least compared to the first three seasons of his NFL career. The former second-round pick appeared in 52 percent of the defense’s snaps—a steep decline from his 97 percent in 2020, 99 percent in 2021 and 91 percent in 2022.

Chinn totaled 23 combined tackles before the injury.

Panthers sign 2 players to practice squad on Wednesday

After the losses of Austin Corbett and Dicaprio Bootle, the Panthers signed Justin McCray and AJ Parker to their practice squad.

The bruised and battered Carolina Panthers will have to finish the 2023 campaign without one of their best players.

On Wednesday, the team announced that they’ve placed starting right guard Austin Corbett on injured reserve. The sixth-year offensive lineman, who sustained a left knee injury in the Week 11 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, is now expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Carolina also shelved cornerback Dicaprio Bootle with a knee injury of his own. The 26-year-old has played in eight games for the Panthers this year, including a pair of starts over the last two weeks.

So, to pad their losses, the team added a pair of players to their practice squad.

One is a familiar name in guard Justin McCray, who has already appeared in two games for Carolina in 2023. McCray signed on with the Panthers this past spring, was waived during final roster cuts, brought back on the practice squad shortly after and released again last month.

The second addition is cornerback AJ Parker. Parker, who spent the summer with the San Francisco 49ers, played in 16 games for the Detroit Lions between 2021 and 2022.

Austin Corbett placed on IR, will miss remainder of 2023 season

Panthers starting RG Austin Corbett will miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury.

A bad offensive line situation for the Carolina Panthers just got a whole lot worse.

As announced by the team on Wednesday afternoon, starting right guard Austin Corbett has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season. The sixth-year lineman sustained a left knee injury in this past Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Per Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the latest setback to Corbett’s left knee is not related to his recently repaired ACL. Corbett tore the ACL in last year’s regular-season finale, which forced him to miss the first six games of the current campaign.

The Panthers will now have to finish the season without their two starting guards. Corbett will now join left guard Brady Christensen, who had been shelved after a biceps injury in Week 1.

Carolina also placed cornerback Dicaprio Bootle on injured reserve. Bootle, who sustained a knee injury as well, started the last two games.

Panthers’ updated 53-man roster following Tuesday’s signing of Dicaprio Bootle

With CB Dicaprio Bootle officially in the fold, the Panthers are now up to a complete 53-man roster.

After this weekend, Carolina Panthers cornerback Dicaprio Bootle had been brought up from the practice squad to the game-day roster for three consecutive weeks. By NFL rule, the three elevations triggered an ultimatum for the team—as they’d either have to sign the young defender to their active roster or place him on waivers.

On Tuesday, they chose the former.

So, with Bootle officially in the fold, let’s take an updated look at the Panthers’ active 53-man roster:

Panthers sign CB Dicaprio Bootle to active roster

After three straight elevations from the practice squad, the Panthers have signed CB Dicaprio Bootle to their active roster.

Being that they brought Dicaprio Bootle up from their practice squad for three straight weeks, the Carolina Panthers had to make a decision on the young cornerback. So, they did on Tuesday.

As announced by the team late this afternoon, Bootle has been signed to the active roster. The 26-year-old was elevated up to the game-day roster for Weeks 3, 4 and 5—forcing Carolina’s hand, by league rule, to either ink him or place him on waivers.

Bootle first cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. He appeared in seven games under head coach Andy Reid between the 2021 and 2022 campaigns, totaling 11 tackles.

The Panthers came calling back on Sept. 11, when Bootle was signed to the practice squad. He played in each of the three games he was called upon for, registering all 56 of his snaps on special teams.

Carolina is now up to a complete 53-man active roster.

Panthers elevating CB Dicaprio Bootle for Week 5 vs. Lions

The Panthers are elevating CB Dicaprio Bootle from the practice squad for a third straight week.

For the third straight week, the Carolina Panthers will be heading into another battle with a depleted secondary. So, for the third straight week, they’ve called up some help.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Saturday afternoon, the team will be promoting cornerback Dicaprio Bootle to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions. This will be Bootle’s third consecutive standard elevation.

Prior to signing with Carolina’s practice squad back on Sept. 11, the University of Nebraska product played a pair of seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared in seven games for the Chiefs over that time, totaling 11 tackles between the 2021 and 2022 campaigns.

Bootle played in 41 snaps, all on special teams, for Carolina the last two games. Given that this will be Bootle’s third elevation, the Panthers must either sign him to the active roster or place him on waivers following the Week 5 outing.

Panthers elevate 2 defensive backs from practice squad for Week 4

The Panthers have elevated CB Dicaprio Bootle and S Matthias Farley for Sunday’s matchup against the Vikings.

The Carolina Panthers will be facing one of the most productive passing offenses in football on Sunday. So, with a banged-up secondary in tow, they’ve called up some much needed reinforcements.

As announced by the team on Saturday afternoon, cornerback Dicaprio Bootle and safety Matthias Farley have been moved from the practice squad to the active roster. The call-ups for the Week 4 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings are standard elevations.

Bootle, who has now been elevated for a second straight week, was signed to the practice squad back on Sept. 9. He first broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.

The University of Nebraska product went on to appear in seven games for the Chiefs between 2021 and 2022. He played in 27 snaps on special teams in last Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Farley joined Bootle on the practice squad a little over a week later on Sept. 19. The Charlotte, N.C. native has played seven seasons in the NFL, picking up 18 starts over 100 games.
