Panthers elevate 2 defensive backs from practice squad for Week 4

The Panthers have elevated CB Dicaprio Bootle and S Matthias Farley for Sunday’s matchup against the Vikings.

The Carolina Panthers will be facing one of the most productive passing offenses in football on Sunday. So, with a banged-up secondary in tow, they’ve called up some much needed reinforcements.

As announced by the team on Saturday afternoon, cornerback Dicaprio Bootle and safety Matthias Farley have been moved from the practice squad to the active roster. The call-ups for the Week 4 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings are standard elevations.

Bootle, who has now been elevated for a second straight week, was signed to the practice squad back on Sept. 9. He first broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.

The University of Nebraska product went on to appear in seven games for the Chiefs between 2021 and 2022. He played in 27 snaps on special teams in last Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Farley joined Bootle on the practice squad a little over a week later on Sept. 19. The Charlotte, N.C. native has played seven seasons in the NFL, picking up 18 starts over 100 games.

Panthers elevate 2 practice squad players for Week 3 game vs. Seahawks

The Panthers elevated QB Jake Luton and CB Dicaprio Bootle from their practice squad ahead of Sunday’s tilt with the Seahawks.

The Carolina Panthers won’t have starting quarterback Bryce Young at their disposal on Sunday. So, with veteran Andy Dalton moving up to get the nod, they needed to move up a backup onto the depth chart.

That move was made on Saturday afternoon, as the team elevated quarterback Jake Luton from the practice squad for their Week 3 contest against the Seattle Seahawks.

Luton, a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has appeared in three games during his NFL career—all of which came during his rookie campaign. He completed 60 of his 110 passing attempts for 624 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions in three starts.

The 6-foot-6, 224-pounder spent the summer with the Panthers, playing in two of the team’s three preseason outings. He connected on eight of his 19 throws for 115 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Panthers also elevated cornerback Dicaprio Bootle. Bootle, who has played in seven games over his pro career, was signed to the practice squad back on Sept. 11.

Panthers add 2 players to practice squad on Monday

The Panthers have added DL Chris Wormley and CB Dicaprio Bootle to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers did some maneuvering on Monday, which included bumping up offensive tackle David Sharpe to the active roster. As a result, the practice squad was left with a few spots to fill—two of which would go to a couple of defenders.

As announced by the team this afternoon, defensive lineman Chris Wormley and cornerback Dicaprio Bootle have been officially signed to the practice squad.

Wormley, who visited with the Panthers one week ago, was a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens back in 2017. A 2016 Second-team All-American selection, the University of Michigan standout would play three seasons in Baltimore—totaling 54 tackles and 2.5 sacks over 30 games.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder was then traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in March of 2020. Before sustaining a season-ending ACL tear last year, Wormley recorded 16 starts, 88 tackles and 8.5 sacks for the Steelers between 2020 and 2022.

Bootle, a University of Nebraska product, broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. He’s appeared in seven games over his two pro campaigns.

Carolina, additionally, released defensive lineman Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad. The group, which is now at 15 players, is left with one vacancy.

Chiefs waived third-year DB Dicaprio Bootle on Tuesday

Defensive back Dicaprio Bootle was waived by the #Chiefs on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived cornerback Dicaprio Bootle in an effort to get down to the NFL-mandated 53-man roster.

Bootle, a third-year defensive back who joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2021, was fighting to earn a spot on the back end of the Chiefs’ CB squad. Some expected Kansas City to keep six corners on the roster, but the team ultimately kept five.

So what’s next for Bootle? First, he’ll go through waivers, giving the other 31 NFL teams an option to claim him and add him to their roster. If Bootle clears waivers, he’ll likely end up on the Chiefs’ practice squad where he’s no stranger to spending time.

The 25-year-old Nebraska product has bounced between the Chiefs’ roster and practice squad many times over the past two seasons. He’s appeared on the team’s roster eight times, playing in seven games, and tallying 11 tackles. The majority of Bootle’s time has been spent on special teams, where he excels as a gunner on punt coverage.

WATCH: Chiefs DB Dicaprio Bootle makes clutch interception vs. Browns

#Chiefs DB Dicaprio Bootle made an incredible interception that turned the tide in Kansas City’s favor against the #Browns on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs comeback effort against the Cleveland Browns is in full effect as the team attempts to take a lead for the first time since the first quarter.

Veteran defensive back Dicaprio Bootle gave Kansas City a huge boost with a clutch third-quarter interception that put the Chiefs in a position to take a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Bootle’s impressive grab set up a touchdown pass from Chris Oladokun to tight end Matt Bushman that put the Chiefs ahead after they clawed their way back from a 19-point deficit earlier in the game.

Plays like this are emblematic of Bootle’s exceptional upside in Kansas City’s defense, and none have meant more to the Chiefs than this, which turned the tide of the team’s final preseason matchup.

Now, Kansas City will just have to hold on and fritter away the final 15 minutes of game time to secure their second win of the preseason.

Every Chiefs player who needs standout preseason performances to make Kansas City’s 53-man roster

Check out every #Chiefs player who needs exceptional preseason performances to warrant a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster in 2023.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL’s top team heading into the 2023 season and the competition to make their final roster is fierce. Players have done their best to prove that they are worthy of being carried onto Kansas City’s regular season roster during training camp, but the real test will start on Sunday when the Chiefs square off against the New Orleans Saints for their first preseason action.

While players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and Joe Thuney are all obvious locks to make the team, others face an uphill battle to warrant their inclusion on Kansas City’s gameday squad in September.

Guys like Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio, and Dicaprio Bootle are all on the roster bubble heading into the Chiefs’ preseason schedule, and are joined by 40 of their teammates on our list of every player who needs big-time performances to make the final cut ahead of the regular season kickoff:

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce threw punch at LB Jack Cochrane during Saturday’s practice

#Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce threw a punch at linebacker Jack Cochrane during Saturday’s practice session in St. Joseph.

After getting into it with defensive back Dicaprio Bootle at practice on Friday, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce threw a punch at linebacker Jack Cochrane after some post-play contact at workouts on Saturday.

In a video posted to Twitter by Chiefs Wire’s own Nicolas Roesch, Kelce can be seen swinging on Cochrane and exchanging words with the second-year linebacker as his temper flared following a touchdown reception.

Physicality is to be expected at training camp, and intrasquad tussles like these are common, but Kelce’s decision to throw hands was likely a step too far. The eleven-year veteran has made a living catching passes in Andy Reid’s offense, and any injury that might result from a physical altercation like this one could spell disaster for the unit.

Watch for Kelce to make things right with Cochrane after practice and throughout the rest of training camp as he looks to squash any beef he may have with the second-year linebacker.

DB Dicaprio Bootle ‘jawing’ with offense at practice, fostering camaraderie

#Chiefs defensive back Dicaprio Bootle has been smack-talking his offensive teammates at practice, to mixed but generally favorable results.

Dicaprio Bootle has one of the best names in the NFL and a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Kansas City Chiefs to boot. He has found his way onto the team’s roster in recent seasons but isn’t exactly a star on the Chiefs’ defense, and is fighting for his future in Kansas City as a third-year defensive back in an exceptionally deep secondary.

Tensions between Bootle and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce spilled over at the Chiefs’ Friday practice session after a particularly hard rep in drills ended in what looked like an intense exchange of words. @BBQChiefs on Twitter documented the incident, posting a video of the exchange to the beleaguered social media site:

A report from practice on Saturday, however, indicated that Bootle’s antagonization of the Chiefs offense seems to be in good fun when another verbal exchange with Richie James ended in a more brotherly gesture from the veteran receiver on the sideline.

Bootle is a player to watch in camp as he competes for playing time in Kansas City’s defense. Perhaps his edge at practice has been what has made him stand out to coaches, who will decide his future with the Chiefs at the end of the preseason.

These 6 Chiefs could play their way onto the 53-man roster

Our @goldmctNFL takes a look at some #Chiefs who could play their way onto the 53-man roster during training camp and the preseason.

Every year there seem to be a few players who sneak onto the Kansas City Chiefs’ 53-man roster after strong performances during training camp and the preseason.

Last season, Brett Veach indicated that four players managed to play their way onto the 53-man roster. Which players could be in line to have similar types of performances in the coming weeks and play their way onto the initial 53-man roster for the 2023 NFL season?

We’ll take a look at a few key candidates down below:

Chiefs to re-sign CB Dicaprio Bootle to practice squad

A whirlwind few days for CB Dicaprio Bootle, who is now back with the #Chiefs on the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to re-sign one of their own on the practice squad.

It was a whirlwind weekend for Dicaprio Bootle. He was signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Saturday, he played in the Week 6 game against the Bills, and he was waived from the 53-man roster on Monday. He’s now back with the team on the practice squad after clearing waivers on Tuesday.

The second-year cornerback out of Nebraska played one defensive snap in place of Jaylen Watson against the Bills. He also played seven special teams snaps during the course of the game.

Bootle had just one practice squad elevation remaining for the 2022 NFL season, which is part of the reason why they signed him to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game. It was clear they envisioned him as the next man up at the cornerback position over players like Nazeeh Johnson and Chris Lammons. He has the flexibility to play both the nickel corner spot and outside. With the team shorthanded due to Rashad Fenton’s hamstring injury, it was important that he was up for the Week 6 game.

The fact that Bootle is no longer on the 53-man roster should provide a bit of optimism that either Fenton or even Trent McDuffie should be back in the lineup for Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.
