Titans promote 2, elevate 2 ahead of game vs. Dolphins

The Titans announced a total of four roster moves ahead of their Week 14 game against the Dolphins.

The Tennessee Titans announced a total of four moves ahead of their “Monday Night Football” game against the Miami Dolphins.

The team announced it has promoted both punter Ty Zentner and running back Jonathan Ward to the active roster from the practice squad.

Also, linebacker JoJo Domann and defensive lineman Marlon Davidson are standard practice squad elevations for the game against the Dolphins. Both will revert back following the contest.

Zentner will be making his Titans debut as he replaces injured punter Ryan Stonehouse, who is out for the season. Ward will serve as the third running back behind Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears and will help on special teams.

If they’re active and see the field, Domann and Davidson would also be making their Titans debuts.

Domann was signed this week and interim special teams coordinator Tom Quinn mentioned him as someone who could serve as a personal protector for punts, along with Ward.

Davidson was inked to the practice squad back in October but has yet to play a game.

The Titans and Dolphins will kick off from Hard Rock Stadium at 8:15 p.m. EST.

Titans promote Otis Reese, add 2 to practice squad

The Titans promoted Otis Reese to the active roster and officially added punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad.

The Tennessee Titans announced a trio of moves on Wednesday, with one of them being the signing of punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad.

The signing of Zentner was reported earlier in the day. Here’s what I wrote about him after news broke of him being added to the practice squad:

An undrafted free-agent signing of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 out of Kansas State, Zentner lost a training camp battle against Arryn Siposs, which led to his being waived and then signed by the Houston Texans.

Zentner appeared in four games for the Texans, attempting 14 punts in that span. He tallied a gross average yards per punt of 42.1 and a net average of 38.6.

The 25-year-old was then waived following the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after punter Cameron Johnston returned from injury.

This is Reese’s second stint on the active roster this season after he initially made the 53-man roster out of training camp before later being waived and brought back on the practice squad.

He’ll take the roster spot of fellow linebacker and now-former Titan, Monty Rice, who was waived on Tuesday. Reese has appeared in two games for Tennessee this season, with all of his snaps coming on special teams.

In addition to adding Zentner and promoting Reese, the Titans also added linebacker JoJo Domann to the practice squad. The Nebraska product last played in 2022 with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 16 games while playing only on special teams.

Cardinals work out pair of linebackers on Tuesday

They had JoJo Domann and Caleb Johnson, both linebackers with only special teams experience in the NFL, for a workout on Tuesday.

The Arizona Cardinals were off on Tuesday but held some tryouts. Per the league transaction report, they brought in a pair of linebackers.

They had JoJo Domann and Caleb Johnson in.

Both are off-ball linebackers.

Domann was an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska last year who played in 16 games for the Indianapolis Colts, logging 264 special teams snaps. He had eight tackle for the Colts. He is listed at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds.

He played safety in college before moving to linebacker.

He was waived from injure reserve back in September.

Johnson was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars after appearing in six games, logging 96 special teams snaps and two tackles.

He was with the New York Jets before the season but played for Jacksonville in 2022 and the Chicago Bears in 2021 after signing with them as an undrafted rookie out of Houston Baptist.

The 6-foot-2, 220-lb linebacker has appeared in 37 games over two and a half seasons, playing only on special teams.

Browns host a slew of players for tryouts during 49ers week

The Browns have hosted 8 for tryouts.

As they do every week, the Cleveland Browns continue to keep the idea of churning their practice squad and bottom of their rosters by hosting players for a tryout. This is standard procedure for them, but did sign practice squad players a year ago from these tryouts, including Mike Brown who is now on the 53-man roster of the Tennessee Titans. This week, the headliners of this tryout were linebacker JoJo Domann and safety Tyree Gillespie as they continue to prepare for the San Francisco 49ers.

Practice squad players can only be elevated to the active roster three times before they are subject to waivers once again. The Browns tend to be proactive about finding new bodies for their practice squad when a player gets close to that total of elevations as the season goes on.

Here is the full list of all eight players the Browns brought in to showcase their skills.

Colts placed six players on reserve lists as part of roster cuts

In the process of reducing the roster to 53, the Colts placed six players on reserve lists.

The Indianapolis Colts got their roster down to 53 players ahead of the deadline Tuesday afternoon and in order to do that, a number of players were moved from the active roster to reserve lists.

Being moved to these reserve lists often comes with the consequence of missing games. Whether it’s due to injury or suspension, the Colts wound up having six players transferred to some type of reserve list as a part of the transactions to satisfy the 53-player mandate.

Four players were placed on the Reserve/Injured list, ending their season effectively. One was placed on the Reserve/PUP list, forcing him to miss at least the first four weeks. The other was transferred to the Reserve/Suspended list for the first three weeks.

Here’s a quick look at the players who were not waived or released, but instead placed on a reserve list:

Where ESPN ranked production from Colts’ rookie class

The Colts’ 2022 rookie class did not impress ESPN all that much.

The Indianapolis Colts got some decent production from a handful of players within the 2022 rookie class, but ESPN felt it wasn’t sufficient enough to be ranked in the top half of the league.

In fact, ESPN ranked the production of each NFL team’s rookie class, and the Colts came in at No. 21 overall. We also gave end-of-season grades for the rookie class following their first campaign.

Here’s what they said about the 2022 class for the Colts:

21. Indianapolis Colts

Before the season, nobody would have expected seventh-round pick Rodney Thomas II to be the Colts’ most valuable rookie of 2022. However, the former linebacker grabbed the free safety position early in the season, eventually starting 10 games and garnering four interceptions. Bernhard Raimann started 11 games at left tackle, finishing 40th in RBWR but a poor 60th in PBWR. Wide receiver Alec Pierce started 12 games and finished with 41 catches for 593 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Jelani Woods came on late in the season with 18 catches for 233 yards just in the Colts’ final six games.”

Pierce had a solid rookie season. It was a bit inconsistent, but he showed the necessary flashes of being an impact player on the boundary. Raimann showed a lot of progress down the stretch while Woods was electric every time he touched the football—he just didn’t play enough.

The big surprise, of course, was Thomas. The safety out of Yale took over a starting role early in the season and didn’t look back. His four interceptions as a rookie are the most for a seventh-round pick since 1986 (Bret Clark) and the most for a player drafted No. 200 overall or later since 1992 (Darren Perry)—the draft still had 12 rounds back then.

Two rookies we shouldn’t overlook weren’t drafted, but they still held impactful roles. Cornerback Dallis Flowers out of Pittsburg State led the NFL in yards per kick return (31.1) and was the only qualified player to average over 30 yards per return. He also saw some work on defense late in the season.

Also, linebacker JoJo Domann immediately became a special teams contributor. His 58.2% snap share on special teams was tied for the third-highest on the team with Grant Stuard while his eight special teams stops were also tied for the third-most with E.J. Speed.

The class wasn’t all roses, though. Safety Nick Cross was a highly-valued third-round pick. He began the season as the starter but played six total defensive snaps after Week 2. He was a healthy scratch for the meaningless Week 18 game.

Sixth-round defensive tackle Curtis Brooks out of Cincinnati didn’t play in a regular-season game and was released from the practice squad midseason. He was the first draft pick from the class to part ways with the team.

Fellow sixth-round tight end Andrew Ogletree was catching fire in training camp before tearing his ACL during joint practices with the Detroit Lions. That’s necessarily his fault, of course, but he did miss his entire rookie campaign.

It was a pretty average class overall, but there certainly are some building blocks at some key positions. That should help whoever the next head coach is when it comes to roster building.

Grading every rookie from Colts’ 2022 draft class

The Colts’ rookie class now has a full season under its belt. Here’s how we graded them.

The 2022 season has come and gone, which means we got a strong look at the Indianapolis Colts’ rookie draft class.

Grading a rookie based on his first season is a bit ridiculous. While some rookies make the transition look easy, it is anything but. There are several factors both on and off the field that impact a player’s performance during his rookie season.

We should also remember that these players, for the most part, are still extremely young. They are still growing up and learning how to deal with the delicate balance of professional sports and life outside of football.

So these grades aren’t concrete, and they certainly can change even as soon as the end of the 2023 season. Think of this more as a review of their rookie campaign with some insight into how they impacted the Colts during their first season.

Here’s a look at the grades for the Colts’ 2022 rookie draft class:

Colts score touchdown off blocked punt against Vikings

The Colts are off to a quick start in Minnesota

This would be considered a surprising start to the Indianapolis Colts-Minnesota Vikings game on Saturday.

The Colts scored a field goal on their first drive and then blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to go up 10-0 over the Vikings in Minnesota.

Ifeadi Oedenigbo got a hand on the punt and JoJo Domann collected the football and returned it 24 yards.

After the PAT, the Colts led 10-0, and the game had not reached the midway point of the first quarter.

8 ruled out, 1 questionable in Colts vs. Titans

Here are the players with injury designations in the Week 7 matchup between the Colts and Titans.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-2-1) and Tennessee Titans (3-2) released their final injury report Friday ahead of the Week 7 matchup at Nissan Stadium.

While the Colts had four players ruled out Friday, the Titans had the same number of players ruled out along with one more listed as questionable.

The Colts will be without at least two starters on the defensive side of the ball, and the Titans will be missing a key piece on their offensive line.

Here are the players with injury designations for the Week 7 matchup:

Colts rule 4 players out vs. Titans

Shaquille Leonard and Kwity Paye among those ruled out for the Colts in Week 7.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard, defensive end Kwity Paye, linebacker JoJo Domann and wide receiver Keke Coutee were ruled out Friday ahead of the Week 7 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Leonard seemed to make progress back from his concussion and broken nose to the point where he was a full participant in practice on Thursday. Still, it seems he’s not ready to go and will be eyeing a Week 8 return.

He is technically cleared from the league’s protocol, but the team is opting to keep him out.

Paye has been dealing with an ankle injury he suffered during the Thursday night game against the Denver Broncos in Week 5 and hasn’t practiced since. Expect Tyquan Lewis to get another start in Paye’s absence.

Coutee entered the league’s concussion protocol after suffering the injury on a punt return during the second quarter of the 34-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7.

Coutee was able to practice this week, sporting a red non-contact jersey during Friday’s practice. This shows he’s making progress but not enough to be cleared under the new protocols.

Domann popped up on the injury report Thursday with an abdomen injury.
