Josh Allen impresses teammates despite comeback falling short: ‘He’s a warrior’

Josh Allen impresses #Bills teammates despite comeback falling short: ‘He’s a warrior’

As the Buffalo Bills entered halftime, down 24-3 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it felt as though western New York was in-store for another blowout loss. Something similar to the Indianapolis Colts game a few weeks prior.

Then… things changed.

The MVP candidate in Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen we heard so much about heading into the season emerged from the locker room in the second half/ He threw the Bills on his back.

The Bills (7-6) scored 24-points in the second half and sent the game to overtime.

Despite the heroic comeback, the Buffalo ultimately dropped the game 33-27, thanks in part to some rather questionable calls from the officials.

Even in the loss, Allen’s teammates couldn’t say enough about their franchise quarterback.

“He’s a baller,” Bill safety, Jordan Poyer, said via video conference after the game. “I’d go to war with Josh any day of the week.”

“That’s our General for sure,” Bills running back Devin Singletary added. “He’s a dog. No matter what, he’s always gonna give it his all and that’s what he showed.”

With a little less than 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Allen injured his left foot/ankle. He stayed in the game, which only added to the impression he left on his teammates.

“Josh is one of the toughest competitors, one of the most resilient football players and people I’ve ever been around,” Bills center Mitch Morse said. “Never seen him point a finger, except at himself. A guy you can rally around. A guy who is in pain. You saw the pain he was in… was still asking for QB runs. Still asking to put it on his back. When you have a guy like that step into a huddle, you know, you’re so prideful to have a quarterback like that, you want to do everything in your power to help him lead our team down the field… Josh Allen is a competitor. If anyone questioned that after today, they weren’t watching the same game we were.”

Bills tight end Dawson Knox, who caught a touchdown and also had a big reception that moved the Bills into field position to ultimately send the game to OT, added to the Allen praise.

“He’s a warrior and everybody sees that and you know, when the team rallies around a guy like that, it’s gonna be hard to beat,” Knox told the media. “The way he puts the team on the back, dealing with whatever injury he’s got right now… we’ve seen it time after time from him, so no ones really surprised, but there’s no other guy I’d rather lead us into a game.”

Bills head coach Sean McDermott, who was critical of his team following their Monday night loss to the Patriots, was impressed with what he saw out of his team’s ability to be resilient on Sunday, led by the QB.

“He’s a warrior and he played his butt off,” McDermott said. “That’s why the guys love him. That’s why he’s our quarterback.”

McDermott wasn’t done.

“Ya, incredible, I mean, look, I know we came up short, right? Incredible, incredible amount of heart and guts that they showed, this team, Josh included, right? But all of them, all of them.”

Allen himself, wrote off the injury saying, “it’s pretty sore, but that’s football.”

He was then asked what went into the decision to keep him in the game and did he say anything specific when it came down to that decision.

“Yeah, there’s no way I was going out,” Allen said.

As Allen often does, he took the positive attention off of his own performance and put it back on his teammates.

“I know the score is what the score was, but I’m damn proud of our team and how we fought in the second half,” Allen said. “That’s who we are. That’s the team I’ve known to love and to know really. Guys that are just resilient. Guys that just want to fight for each other. Again, it is what it is, the score is what it was, but to come out and play that way, I’m proud of our team, of how we did it. Obviously we wish the end result was different, I’m super, super proud of our guys.”

While as Morse said, there is no questioning the level of toughness in Allen, the Bills now find themselves in a difficult spot when it comes to making the playoffs.

At 7-6, the Bills are currently in the seventh seed in the AFC and hold the final playoff spot. Their current odds are listed at 65% when it comes to the likelihood at that they will be in the postseason.

With only four games remaining, the Bills are going to have to pray that Allen’s injury isn’t serious and that they can start stringing together some wins down the stretch, or performances like this… will all be for not.

Here are five takeaways from the Buffalo Bills’ 33-27 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14:

What Devin Singletary said about Bills’ rushing attack in first half

#Bills RB Devin Singletary breaks down the rushing attack from the first half of the 2021 season:

The Buffalo Bills’ rushing attack hasn’t been very good throughout the 2021 season… but it’s slightly improving.

One consistency in it has been running back Devin Singletary.

The third-year pro has been in the lineup throughout the year. Meanwhile, Zack Moss has been in and out of the lineup as a healthy scratch, alternating in recent weeks in favor of veteran Matt Breida.

But Singletary did not blame rushing attack struggles on any single player or aspect of the offense.

Rather, Singletary said it has come down to the little things making a difference.

“It could’ve just been us not being on our details,” Singletary for the MMQB. “And the other thing, this is the NFL. The record doesn’t matter. These guys get paid as well. So you gotta be on your A game every week. That’s what I feel like it came down to.”

Moving forward, it remains to be seen who gets a chance to correct those finer details Singletary discussed.

While the past few games we’ve seen Singletary and Breida in the lineup, Buffalo’s coaching staff hasn’t been afraid of making game day changes to the lineup.

And just last week, Bills head coach Sean McDermott admitted that the roster in the backfield would be a “weekly” situation. It could keep changing.

Whatever combinations could be on the way, Buffalo won’t mind them as long as they work.

Report card: Bills top Saints, 31-6, on Thanksgiving

Report card: #Bills top #Saints, 31-6, on Thanksgiving (via @NateMendelson):

Coming off a brutal loss in Indianapolis to the Colts, the Bills had a short week to get over their ghosts. They did just that, taking down the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, 31-6, on Thanksgiving night.

Buffalo (7-4) dominated the Saints (5-6) exactly how they should have with New Orleans missing so many key components.

Here’s how Bills Wire graded Buffalo after the win:

The Buffalo Bills advanced to 3-1 on the season with a dominant 40-0 victory over the inept Houston Texans.

It was a wet and rainy day in Western New York that saw plenty of sloppy play from the away team. Outside of an interception from Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and a poor red zone possession, the Bills played a flawless game.

With the Kansas City Chiefs on the horizon let’s look back at who played well and who didn’t against the Houston Texans in this week’s stock report:

The Buffalo Bills shut out the Houston Texans 40-0 in a rain-filled contest in Western New York Sunday.

While at first glance the win against Houston may have seemed like a pure blowout, rain reared its head early and often throughout the game, causing three fumbles and an intercepted pass by Allen in the first quarter.

The Bills QB, who contributed six carries for 41 yards as well, spoke after the game about how the elements created opportunities for improvement.

“Too many balls on the ground, too many ways the ball was in harm’s way,” Allen said while addressing the media. “There’s a lot of things to clean up, but this was a good win.”

Though the Texans also had four interceptions and two fumbles to help Buffalo’s cause in the victory, the QB persevered the elements to go 20 for 29 for 248 yards with two passing touchdowns to TE Dawson Knox while leaning on 199 yards in the run game, and on the foot of kicker Tyler Bass who added 16 points.

Bills RB’s Devin Singletary and Zack Moss shared 14 carries apiece. Singletary would finish with 79 yards, and Moss would add 61 and a TD.

The Bills RB group had been in question during the offseason, but Allen spoke to the importance of the run as well as the impact of the weather on Sunday’s game.

“Very important, weather, you can let it affect you if you think about it too much,” the QB said. “We still wanted to throw the ball and do what we needed to do, but when teams get one-dimensional and just start running the ball, especially when the weather and teams force you to throw the ball, you got to be able to throw it. You look at some of the runs that we had with Zack and Motor, bouncing off tackles, putting their nose down, and just going and getting yards and they did a great job.”

Head coach Sean McDermott was happy with the run game as well.

“I did like the way we ran the football today,” McDermott said during the post-game press conference.

“You want to have the ability to be a two-dimensional offense,” the coach added. “The guys get mad when I make them practice with a wet football when it’s really sunny outside. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t I guess. You’ve got to be able to play in this weather. You guys all know where we live here in Buffalo, so you got to be weatherproof that way.”

Buffalo advanced to 3-1 on the year with their third consecutive high-scoring victory. The team now sits atop the AFC East division ahead of next week’s AFC Championship game rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs.

When asked what he’d learned about the team with four games and a month of gameplay under their belts, Allen spoke to one quality and one coach that both make a difference in games like this.

“I think resiliency is one of the words that comes to my mind,” he added. “Didn’t start the season how we’d like to, didn’t start off today how we’d like to. It’s Coach McDermott, like I said, does a great job of teaching situational football and complementary football, and I think that’s one thing we’re doing a really good job of right now.”
