Bills’ phenomenal defense vs. Commanders set a new team record

A new team record for the #Bills (via @TejasVemparala):

The Buffalo Bills defense dominated on Sunday versus the Washington Commanders, with the Bills’ pass rushers combining to sack Commanders’ quarterback Sam Howell nine times.

The pass rush helped force five turnovers in the 37-3 win. Howell was constantly under pressure when throwing and the Bills’ pass rushers had a field day against a weak offensive line.

Turns out, the pass rushers set a record in Buffalo team history. Sunday was the first time that the Bills defense had four defenders with one or more sack ever:

Bills Wire Week 3 Player of the Game linebacker Terrel Bernard led the pass-rushing pressure along with defensive end Leonard Floyd. They had two sacks each.

Defensive tackle Ed Oliver and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones also joined Bernard and Floyd in the multi-sack stat column with 1.5 sacks each, respectively.

The nine-sack performance is a big departure from last week’s win against the Las Vegas Raiders where Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo was not sacked at all.

The Bills defense has never had four players with multiple sacks, but have had nine sacks against an opponent before.

On Jan, 9, 2022, the Bills registered nine against the New York Jets, with Mario Addison, Jordan Poyer, and Ed Oliver registering multiple sacks. The dominating performance by the defense is incredibly impressive.

The Bills defensive line will need a repeat performance this Sunday when they play the undefeated division rival Miami Dolphins against an electric offense that scored 70 points last weekend. We hope to see multiple sacks against Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

9 best free agent pass rushers after Jadeveon Clowney joined Ravens

The Jaguars showed brief interest in Jadeveon Clowney, but now he’s off the market. Could anyone else catch the team’s eye?

The pass rushing market was already thin Friday morning, but got it a little thinner when Jadeveon Clowney decided to join the Baltimore Ravens.

Clowney, 30, previously visited the Jacksonville Jaguars, but left without a contract. The team’s interest in a free agent pass rusher made sense given the Jaguars finished 26th in the NFL in sacks last season and didn’t make many changes at the position in the offseason.

Given the brief interest in Clowney, it’d make sense if the Jaguars peeked at the rest of the market.

Here are the best edge rushers still available with three weeks left until the regular season begins:

11 remaining free-agent pass rushers the Panthers could still sign

If the Panthers venture into free agency for a pass rusher, here are 11 notable players they could scoop off the market:

If this summer’s pass-rushing competition doesn’t result in a clear partner for Pro Bowler Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers may be venturing into free agency to pick a winner. And if they do, here are 11 notable edge defenders they could choose from:

All-Time Saints Villains: Which pass rushers had the most sacks against New Orleans?

All-Time Saints Villains: Which pass rushers had the most sacks against New Orleans? Hall of Famer Kevin Greene is just one star that challenged them:

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks and offensive linemen have been terrorized by some pass rushers over the years; some more than others. The Saints have had the bad luck to share a division with a Hall of Fame talent like Kevin Greene, only to see him join a new team in another conference while they’re leaving to form a new rivalry with the expansion-era Carolina Panthers — only for Greene to return and bully them with Carolina for a few more years to close out his career.

And that’s just one story. We’re continuing to highlight the Saints’ most challenging opponents, rivals, and villains over the years, this time putting a focus on the many sack artists who have lined up against the black and gold:

DE Mario Addison could be out with the Texans

The Houston Texans are seeking to release defensive end Mario Addison.

The Houston Texans gave defensive end Mario Addison a shot in 2022, but appear to be moving in a different direction.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are seeking to release the 6-3, 260-pound edge defender, who signed a two-year, $7.7 million contract to be with the Texans last offseason.

Releasing Addison will save the Texans a little over $2.3 million according to Over The Cap. Houston will lose $2.1 million in dead money against the salary cap with the release.

Former Texans coach Lovie Smith told reporters Dec. 26 that the presence of veteran defensive ends Jerry Hughes and Addison was key to setting the tempo in the defensive line room.

“Jerry and Mario have played a long time, just the tempo they set in the room with everything that the defensive line does,” said Smith.

The Texans are retooling their defensive line as they have signed defensive tackles Hassan Ridgeway and Sheldon Rankins through the first wave of free agency.

Houston Texans donate $10,003 to GoFundMe for Buffalo Bills S Damar Hamlin

The Houston Texans donated $10,003 to the GoFundMe for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

The Houston Texans donated $10,003 to the GoFundMe for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

The 24-year-old went into cardiac arrest following a tackle made on Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins on Monday Night Football in Week 17 at Paycor Stadium. Hamlin needed CPR, was taken off the field via an ambulance to a nearby hospital, and remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

According to the GoFundMe’s page, the page was initially established to support a toy drive for Hamlin’s community, but quickly became a way for everyone from NFL teams to players and fans to show their support for Hamlin.

This fundraiser was initially established to support a toy drive for Damar’s community, sponsored by the Chasing M’s Foundation. However, it has received renewed support in light of Damar’s current battle and we can’t thank all of you enough. Your generosity and compassion mean the world to us.

As representatives of Damar, the team at Jaster Athletes posted the fundraiser updates and will work with the Hamlin family, The Chasing M’s Foundation, and the GoFundMe team to ensure the safe delivery of funds.

Damar created The Chasing M’s Foundation to use as a vehicle to bring lasting impact to his community. The foundation supports toy drives, back-to-school drives, kids camps, and more. We’re hopeful about Damar’s future involvement in disbursing the incredibly generous contributions.

This is the only current fund that is being used by the Hamlin Family. We appreciate your understanding as we give them the time and space they need to focus on Damar’s health first.

Again, thank you for your thoughts, prayers and support during this time.

Hamlin has two former Bills teammates on the Texans in defensive ends Mario Addison and Jerry Hughes, who were with him in his first NFL season in 2021. Rookie defensive tackle Kurt Hinish was also Hamlin’s high school teammate at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.

Texans cancel player media availability following Bills S Damar Hamlin medical emergency

The Houston Texans have canceled player availability on Tuesday in response to Buffalo Bills S Damar Hamlin’s medical emergency Monday night.

The Houston Texans canceled all media availability for players and team meetings Tuesday.

The move comes in response to the NFL coming to a standstill following the medical emergency of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin on Monday night. During the first quarter of the Bills’ game with the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium, Hamlin collapsed to the ground after getting up from making a tackle. Hamlin required CPR and was carried via ambulance to a nearby hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Hamlin has at least two former teammates on the Texans in defensive ends Mario Addison and Jerry Hughes, who both played for the Bills last season. Texans defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire was also the Bills’ assistant defensive line coach last season. Defensive tackle Kurt Hinish was also high school teammates with Hamlin at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.

The NFL decided Tuesday the game between the Bills and Bengals will not be resumed this week.

Texans coach Lovie Smith made sound decision on fourth-and-1 against the Chiefs

Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith had good reasons for not going for it on fourth-and-1 against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15.

HOUSTON — There have been many times this season that Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith could be criticized by fans and some sports analysts for his decisions.

In the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, he elected to end the game in a tie rather than go for the win.

Combine that with other questionable calls from the sidelines, and you end up with a 1-12-1 record.

In Houston’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, critics pointed out one coaching decision by Smith that made some scratch their heads in bewilderment. Many believe that the Texans’ record should dictate riskier calls by Smith, but in reality, coaches do not coach to their win-loss totals. They go as the game goes and get a natural feel for how the team is playing.

A deeper look into the questionable call will help clear up some confusion.

With a little over four minutes left in the second quarter, the Texans were leading the Chiefs 14-7. They faced a fourth-and-1 at midfield, and instead of going for it, Smith decided to punt the ball. The Chiefs’ punt returner downed the ball at the six-yard line, and after a holding penalty on Kansas City, the ball was placed at the three-yard line.

Many believe that Smith should have elected to go for it on fourth down since the team has long been out of playoff contention, and it could have boosted morale on the sideline, but football isn’t played that way.

What Smith observed was backup quarterback Jeff Driskel being held to one yard on third-and-2. Without the services of rookie running back Dameon Pierce and a backfield by committee, Smith decided to punt the ball.

It was a good decision.

“We had a lead, thought we were playing pretty good,” Smith said after the game about his decision. “I liked the position we were in. Backed them up a little bit. I would do the same thing again in that situation too.”

Smith also was watching how effective his defense had played in the last two series against the Chiefs.

Texans’ defensive lineman Mario Addison forced a fumble on Kansas City rookie running back Isiah Pacheco on the Chiefs’ second possession of the quarter to get Houston’s offense the ball back at Kansas City’s 22-yard line.

Two plays later, quarterback Davis Mills scored on a 17-yard run to give the Texans a 14-7 lead. Houston’s defense would come up huge on the Chiefs’ next offensive possession by holding them to a quick three-and-out.

With those two factors in mind, it is a no-brainer for the coach, who is also the defensive coordinator, to punt the ball away instead of risking not getting a first down. Making Kansas City’s offense, led by NFL MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes drive the field for a score, which they did, is the chance you take, especially with the way the defense was playing.

Smith may deserve a lot of criticism for how this season has evolved, and if you ask him, he will take full accountability for it, but on the fourth-and-1 play call, he was correct.
