Eagles vs. Buccaneers: 3 ways Tampa Bay has improved since Week 3 matchup

We’re looking at three ways the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have improved since their Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles

On September 25, 2023, the Philadelphia defense shut down Baker Mayfield and the Tampa offense, while the road team had a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver on a night when Jalen Hurts and the offense left points on the board.

Rookie defensive tackle and No. 9 overall pick Jalen Carter was dominant in limited pass rush opportunities, while the Eagles secondary adjusted without Avonte Maddox in the slot, moving James Bradberry and Sydney Brown around the field.

In that matchup, Tampa finished with 174 total yards and was 5-10 on third downs.

Fast forward four months later, and the two teams will meet for a second time this season after the Buccaneers won the NFC South, securing the fourth seed.

Both teams are vastly different since that matchup, and we’re looking at three ways that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have improved since the last meaningful contest.

Bucs’ biggest surprises from the first quarter of the season

Despite media expectations, the Bucs are 3-1 and atop the NFC South — but that isn’t the only surprise in Tampa Bay this season.

Outside of Tampa Bay, expectations for the Buccaneers coming into the 2023 season were low. With no Tom Brady and $75 million in dead cap money, the Bucs were dead on arrival.

Tampa Bay clearly had other ideas.

At 3-1, Tampa Bay is firmly in control of the NFC South and a playoff contender. It comes as little surprise that the defense is above average, powered largely by 10 forced turnovers, the second-most in the NFL this year. The source of these turnovers and the defense’s resiliency, on the other hand, may be unexpected.

The biggest surprises come on offense. Things were going to be different under new offensive coordinator Dave Canales, but as a rookie playcaller, it was a mystery whether he would be a change for good or not. A quarter of the way through the season, it would be difficult to argue that Canales is not an upgrade for the Bucs offense.

Here are the biggest surprises from the first four games of Tampa Bay’s season:

The top defensive players in Tampa Bay’s loss to Philadelphia, per PFF

PFF wasn’t too impressed with Tampa Bay’s defense across the board on Monday.

It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense on Monday.

While the Bucs were able to force some red zone field goals and a turnover on downs against the Philadelphia Eagles in their 25-11 loss, the team had a tough time limiting yards. Tampa Bay gave up 472 total yards and a staggering 201 rushing yards, allowing Philadelphia to generally control the game the whole way through. Pro Football Focus took to grading every Bucs player who played in the game, and their defensive grades didn’t reflect well on the team’s overall performance.

Here are PFF’s top 10 performers in Week 3 for Tampa Bay:

Studs and Duds from Tampa Bay’s 25-11 loss to the Eagles

It was an ugly affair for the Bucs on Monday night, but there were still some solid performers in the mix.

It wasn’t the best of outings for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on prime-time TV Monday.

The Bucs faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles, and although both teams were 2-0 heading into the matchup, it wasn’t a very competitive game. The Eagles controlled the game most of the way through and ended up beating Tampa Bay soundly 25-11. It’ll be a big reset during practice to try and get things right, but until then, the Bucs will have a bit to think about.

While there was plenty wrong with Tampa Bay’s overall outing, there were still some solid performers across the day. Here are Bucs Wire’s Studs and Duds for Week 3 against the Eagles:

Bucs corner Dee Delaney expected to return

Delaney led the Bucs in special teams snaps in 2022.

One of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; special teams players is set to return in 2023.

Cornerback [autotag]Dee Delaney[/autotag], who led the Bucs in special teams snaps in 2022, is expected to return to the team in 2023 as an exclusive rights free agent as reported by Greg Auman of FOX Sports.

Delaney has been with multiple teams since entering the league in 2018, but he’s been with Tampa Bay since 2021. The Bucs like to use him as a special teams player, but recent cornerback injuries over the last few years have seen him take more snaps than perhaps intended at the corner position. He still has value in knowing Todd Bowles’s system, though and he could get more snaps with potential departures as cornerback like Sean Murphy-Bunting.
