Bengals don’t sound likely to seek veteran CB help after Dax Hill injury

The Bengals have high hopes for rookies and one guy returning from injury.

The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t likely to make a move in free agency or trade to help the ailing cornerback position after losing Dax Hill for the season.

That approach mimics what Bengals fans have already seen despite injury issues elsewhere.

One simply has to read between the lines on this front, as the Bengals clearly have big hopes for rookie corner Josh Newton and rookie safety Daijahn Anthony to pick up some of the slack.

Bengals coaches have also talked highly of the impending return for D.J. Ivey.

“The arrow was pointing up and he was getting momentum. We need him,” cornerbacks coach Charles Burks said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “It shows you how valuable Dax is. We need multiple players to replace him, but we’ve also got talent.”

Ivey was a seventh-round success story for the Bengals from the 2023 draft who suffered an ACL injury last December and it sounds like he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

So while the idea of going to get an outside name for help after Hill’s injury might sound nice, the Bengals will once again lean heavily on their drafting, for better or worse.

Bengals hit the worst-case scenario with Dax Hill injury update

The Dax Hill injury news is here and it’s bad for reasons well beyond this season.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dax Hill will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL suffered in the Week 5 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed the news on Monday, which leaves DJ Turner to start opposite Cam Taylor-Britt for a secondary that already missed starting slot corner Mike Hilton against the Ravens.

But the long-term outlook is now messier than ever. Hill was the supposed Jessie Bates replacement, then successfully switched to cornerback this year and was doing well.

Now, the team has to make a decision on his fifth-year option in May, but a full-blown ACL recovery timeline means he might not be ready for the start of training camp.

It is a brutal turn of events, especially for Hill, who embraced the challenge of the position change in a professional manner and was beginning to excel. Now, he’ll have to come back from a tricky injury at the same spot and scrap on a depth chart that could undergo big changes in the offseason.

The Bengals defense couldn’t afford to take any hits either after another miserable overall showing as the team dropped to 1-4.

Taylor also revealed that backup offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland tore his bicep on Sunday and will miss the season, which explains the team signing a player off the Falcons’ practice squad on Monday.

Joe Burrow dominates early, but Ravens rally for a 41-38 win over Bengals in overtime

After a week of pundits and experts questioning Joe Burrow’s demise, the former LSU star put the NFL back on notice with a dominant, five-touchdown performance against the Baltimore Ravens at Paycor Stadium.

Still, it wasn’t enough, as Lamar Jackson and company rallied from a late fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime with a 56-yard field goal from Justin Tucker. In overtime, the Bengals recovered a Lamar Jackosn fumble but were unable to win it after Evan McPherson missed a 56-yard field goal of his win.

Baltimore used a big Derrick Henry run to get into field goal position, and Justin Tucker’s 24 field goals gave the Ravens their third straight win.

At one point in the fourth quarter, Burrow was 27-for-34 for 353 yards and five touchdown passes, while former college teammate Ja’Marr Chase had nine catches for 174 yards and two scores against a Ravens secondary full of first-round picks and high-paid defenders.

Burrow finished 30-39 passing for 392 yards, five touchdowns, and one costly interception. His MVP counterpart, Lamar Jackson, was 26-42 passing for 348 yards and four touchdowns. Jackson also had 12 carries for 56 yards on the day.

After a slow start, Derrick Henry finished things with a bang, rushing for 91 yards on 15 carries, with one rushing touchdown.

Bengals quickly rule out Dax Hill with knee injury vs. Ravens

A massive injury update for the Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dax Hill limped off the field during the opening quarter of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

What turned into a routine-looking trip to the blue tent almost immediately resulted in the team ruling him out for the game with a knee injury.

Losing Hill for any sort of time would be a big blow to the Bengals defense. The former safety transitioned to cornerback and won a starting job over the summer.

With Hill out of the lineup, former second-rounder DJ Turner will start across from Cam Taylor-Britt. Rookie Josh Newton has already been called into duty with veteran slot corner Mike Hilton out on Sunday, too.

Bengals reveal critical starting job decisions before Week 1

Bengals reveal critical starting job decisions before Week 1

Two starting Cincinnati Bengals battles for Week 1 were decided earlier this week and they’ll go to a player facing his former team and a former first-round pick.

Trent Brown gets the nod at right tackle, meaning he will face one of his former teams in the New England Patriots. Brown had two stints in New England, first in 2018 and then the last three seasons following two years with the Raiders.

Rookie first-round pick Amarius Mims is dealing with a pectoral injury and was ruled out for Sunday. Fellow reserve tackle D’Ante Smith is on injured reserve. So it’s the two Browns up front, Orlando and Trent as the tackles.

As for the running mate to Cam Taylor-Britt and cornerback, that role will go to 2022 first-round pick Dax Hill, beating out last year’s starter, DJ Turner.

“It was a great battle. It wasn’t a guy failed so the other one is the starter,” head coach Zac Taylor said, via the Bengals’ official website. “It was two guys I really felt like getting the best out of each other. For Dax to be able to assume that responsibility I think is good. It doesn’t mean DJ is not playing, (or) that there is not roles we have for these other guys. It’s a long season so guys have to be ready for their opportunity to come.”

Hill started all 17 games last season at safety, recording 110 tackles and two interceptions with 11 passes defended. The Bengals were able to move Hill to cornerback after signing former Ravens safety Geno Stone in free agency to pair with the returning Vonn Bell. That gives the Bengals a nice five-some in the defensive backfield with Hill, Bell, Stone, Taylor-Britt and nickelback Mike Hilton. We’ll get our first true look at this group Sunday against New England.

Texans fans react to WR Tank Dell taking uncalled late hit against the Bengals

Tank Dell took a late hit against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 10, and Houston Texans fans unloaded with reactions.

Houston Texans receiver Tank Dell took a big hit.

With 7:35 to go in the second quarter of Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Texans rookie took what seemed to be a late hit from Bengals safety Dax Hill — at least, referee Carl Cheffers’ crew thought as much by their lack of penalty.

With Dell, who has quickly become a fan favorite, taking that type of hit and no penalty assessed, it riled up Texans fans. Here are some of the best remarks about the no-call on Twitter.

WATCH: Michigan football players in preseason week 2

Some incredible plays! #GoBlue

Michigan football players made some outstanding players in Week 1 of the preseason.

While stars like Tom Brady and the No. 2  selection in the 2022 NFL draft, Aidan Hutchinson, didn’t suit up for Week 2 of preseason action, there were still some highlight reel plays made by former Wolverines.

The first came by second-year wide receiver Nico Collins for the Houston Texans.

Michigan fans are very familiar with Collins’ jump ball ability. It seemed whenever the Wolverines threw in the direction of Collins, he came down with it. He finished the game against the Dolphins with four catches, 48 yards and one touchdown.

The second former Michigan highlight came from the 31st pick of the 2022 NFL draft, Daxton Hill.

Hill made a spectacular dive for the interception, and he showed why he was a first-round steal for the Bengals. Cincinnati will have the pleasure of lining Hill up in a variety of ways during the NFL season.

Former running back Chris Evans made the Week 1 highlights, and he made the them yet again.

In the first week of preseason, the former Michigan running back had a fantastic carry, but this week he ran for a 71-yard kick return. Evans is vying for a big role behind Joe Mixon this year in Cincinnati, and his ability to return kicks will just add extra value for the Bengals.

Another first-round pick from the 2022 NFL draft has officially signed his first pro contract.

As with all first-round picks, Hill’s is a four-year deal that’s fully guaranteed, with a fifth-year team option.
