Bengals sacks earned 25,000 donations from Campbell’s to local food bank in 2023

Sam Hubbard’s showing in 2023 went toward a good cause.

For every Cincinnati Bengals sack this past season, Campbell’s Chunky donated 1,000 products up to 25,000. With 44 sacks in the 2023 season, the Bengals defense delivered.

Defensive end Sam Hubbard is part of Campbell’s Chunky Soup Squad and was responsible for 6,000 products donated to Freestore Foodbank because of the six sacks he finished with this season.

He also gave back after the season by volunteering with his mom, Amy Hubbard, at the Freestore Foodbank by unboxing palettes of Campbell’s Chunky soup and stocking the shelves in the food market while also getting a behind-the-scenes look at the facility.

“It’s inspiring,” said Hubbard, “We’re here to try and make a difference and make an impact.”

Sam Hubbard played through injury late in the season

Duke Tobin with some thoughts on Sam Hubbard’s effort.

Now that the season is over, it’s a good time for players to recover from some injuries that they suffered over the long season.

Cincinnati Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said Sam Hubbard is doing just that after apparently having surgery on an undisclosed injury he was dealing with late in the year. The defensive end played through the injury and Tobin seemed extremely impressed that he still went out every week to try to give the Bengals a chance at the playoffs.

“He was just a warrior and played through things most human beings wouldn’t play through and gave us the opportunity to go out there with a chance to win,” Tobin said. “That’s what Sam Hubbard is all about.”

The Bengals dealt with major injuries all season, most notably to quarterback Joe Burrow who had to miss most of the second half of the year due to wrist surgery. He apparently wasn’t the only one dealing with an injury that needed to be surgically repaired, but Hubbard powered through.

Cincinnati finished with a winning record this season, but if everyone is able to get healthy and stay healthy next season, it will be a very different team than what the Bengals were playing as late in the season.

Bengals DE Sam Hubbard to play vs. Browns before offseason surgery

Sam Hubbard is headed for surgery after playing against the Browns.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard will play through an injury to close the regular season against the Cleveland Browns.

Hubbard needs what is described as “undisclosed offseason surgery” in a new writeup where he reveals the decision to play wasn’t much of a decision at all.

“Didn’t think twice about it. I came this far, I’m playing. I’m finishing the year strong. I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Hubbard said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “I wouldn’t leave my guys hanging. I love being out there. I told them today I’m going to be with them.”

Beyond the obvious stuff, Hubbard goes on to cite the winless mark in the AFC North this year as something he wants to correct, which is fair enough — the Bengals haven’t gone winless in the division since 2002.

While it’s hard to know before injury reports if other injured players like Ja’Marr Chase will suit up, fans can write in Hubbard as a guy they’ll see one last time this season.

4 offensive keys for Vikings in Week 15 vs. Bengals

To get back on track against the Cincinnati Bengals this Saturday, the Minnesota Vikings have to follow these four offensive keys to victory

The Minnesota Vikings are on the road again as they head to Paycor Stadium to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday at noon CST.

Minnesota’s offense has been in a rut as of late. In the last three weeks, they’ve had three of their five worst games offensively, according to expected points added. If the Vikings want a shot at the playoffs, they can’t afford to continue their current pace on that side of the ball. There won’t be many chances to win a game 3-0 in today’s NFL.

They’re going up against a Bengals team that just had one of their best games on defense as they held a solid Colts offense to less than 300 total yards.

Not to say that this isn’t still a flawed defense, it is. They are near the bottom of the league in both EPA per play and defensive success rate

After two-plus games of below-average quarterback play, Josh Dobbs has been replaced by veteran Nick Mullens now that he is off of injured reserve.

If the Vikings want to get back on track on the offensive side, here are four keys that they will have to follow.

NFL Films releases short on Sam Hubbard

A must-see video for Bengals fans.

Defensive end Sam Hubbard has not only played for the Cincinnati Bengals for six years, he also grew up a Bengals fan in the Cincinnati area.

Hubbard remembers watching Bengals games as a kid and rooting for them, something he talks about in a video posted by NFL Films on Twitter on Thursday.

Hubbard has stayed in Ohio his entire life. He went to Archbishop Moeller High School and played lacrosse and football before going to Ohio State University. From there, he was selected by the Bengals in the third round of the 2018 draft.

In the video, he talks about some of his biggest moments with the Bengals from his first defensive touchdown and his first sack to the forced fumble against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game that helped send them to the Super Bowl in the 2021 season. He also mentions his 98-yard touchdown against the Ravens in the 2022 wild-card game.

Hubbard has a lifelong connection to Cincinnati that will always be remembered fondly by Bengals fans, and he still has more to go.

Anton Harrison on costly holding: ‘Got to put myself in better position’

Anton Harrison took responsibility for the penalty that nullified the play that could’ve won the game for the Jaguars.

It looked for a second like C.J. Beathard saved the day Monday night. Facing a third down in overtime around midfield, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ backup quarterback rolled to his right and heaved a ball downfield to Calvin Ridley who hauled in a 43-yard grab on the Cincinnati Bengals’ 2-yard line.

The crowd went wild … until they saw the yellow flag near the line of scrimmage. A holding penalty on rookie right tackle Anton Harrison nullified the play and led to a punt two plays later.

On ESPN2’s ManningCast, former NFL quarterback Eli Manning argued that the Bengals’ Sam Hubbard “flopped” to draw the flag, while ex-Bengals receiver Chad Johnson defended the call.

Harrison said his opinion of the penalty doesn’t matter, though.

“The refs are gonna do their job, I’m not gonna agree with everything,” Harrison said in the locker room after the Jaguars’ 34-31 loss. “I just got to try to put myself in a better position. That’s really it. I got to put myself in a better position to make that block.”

Harrison has done well to avoid penalties during his rookie season. The costly holding penalty was the fifth flag thrown on the first-round pick this season and the third for holding. Veterans Walker Little and Brandon Scherff have drawn six and five, respectively.

The right tackle that Harrison replaced, Jawann Taylor, has drawn a league-high 16 flags in his first season with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bengals injury report features Higgins, Hubbard and Reader

The first Steelers vs. Bengals injury report is here.

The first Cincinnati Bengals injury report ahead of the team’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers is a massive one.

There, big names like Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins and Sam Hubbard headline the list:

  • QB Joe Burrow (DNP)
  • WR Tee Higgins (DNP)
  • DL DJ Reader (DNP)
  • CB Cam Taylor-Britt (DNP)
  • LB Akeem Davis-Gaither (LP)
  • DL BJ Hill (LP)
  • DL Sam Hubbard (LP)
  • WR Andrei Iosivas (LP)
  • RB Chase Brown (FP)
  • WR Trenton Irwin (FP)
  • DL Cam Sample (FP)
  • OL Jonah Williams (FP)

Burrow has yet to be moved to IR, so the team’s listing him until that happens. Reader has been dealing with a sickness. Rookie running back Chase Brown is not technically a member of the 53-man roster yet, but has had his 21-day return window opened.

The report comes on the heels of a Zac Taylor press conference in which the head coach noted that both Hubbard and Higgins continue to trend in the right direction and should practice this week.

As such, it’s not too concerning that Higgins didn’t suit up on a Wednesday, a day usually reserved for veteran rest anyway. If he’s not practicing on the second or third day, then it’s fair to wonder if he’s a game-time decision.

Bengals’ Zac Taylor provides Tee Higgins, Sam Hubbard injury updates

Good injury updates on key players for the Bengals.

It sounds like good news on the injury front for the Cincinnati Bengals when it comes to big names like Sam Hubbard and Tee Higgins.

Speaking with reporters on the Wednesday before a clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor talked about both guys.

Taylor effectively said that things are moving in the right direction for both guys and to expect them at practice this week.

That’s a big change both in comments from the team and practice participation for both. Higgins has only been able to suit up in seven games this year due to the rib fracture and later hamstring setback in practice. Hubbard has appeared in eight but missed the last three.

The Bengals could certainly use the help against the Steelers as the offense breaks in Jake Browning under center and the run defense continues to suffer without Hubbard — with the playoffs still a slim possibility.

Bengals players were texting Lou Anarumo right after loss to Texans

Bengals defenders were texting their coordinator about improvements within an hour of the loss to the Texans.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo says players were texting him with corrections within an hour of Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans.

Led by DJ Reader, Anarumo says his phone was blowing up not long after leaving Paycor Stadium.

Anarumo added this about practice on a short week, per CLNS Media’s Mike Petraglia: “I wish I had the answer to that one… Yesterday, it wasn’t up to what it needs to be… we don’t have time for tackling drills.. but we’re going to find time.”

Cincinnati’s defense, while down Sam Hubbard, let up a stunning 17 explosive plays to a Houston offense led by a rookie quarterback, totaling 28 first downs and 544 total yards.

While the desire for improvement was immediate and apparent, Reader, Anarumo and all involved don’t have long to get things back on track before Thursday night against the Ravens on primetime — and likely without Trey Hendrickson given the latest update on his injury.

Myles Murphy might get biggest chance yet with Sam Hubbard out

Can Bengals first-rounder Myles Murphy break out?

Cincinnati Bengals rookie pass-rusher Myles Murphy emerged recently with some notable playing time.

With Sam Hubbard officially out against the Houston Texans, the first-round pick is set to see even more opportunities.

Murphy, who played career-high snaps in the loss to Tennessee at the start of October (19 snaps), says he continues to adapt to the pro game well.

“The biggest change (from college to the NFL) is the in-game adjustments,” Murphy said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “It can happen during the play and that didn’t happen in college, but I’m getting used to it. The more I’m here, the comfortable I’m getting with play.”

Murphy was one of the big snap count takeaways from last week because he supplanted even Joseph Ossai in snaps during the win over the Bills.

Against the Texans, Murphy could see an even bigger role as he and backups like Cam Sample look to fill the void with Hubbard out.
