Ohio may look into banning unruly bettors after Dayton basketball coach cited attacks on players

This would be a positive step, but it’s sadly not enough.

Dayton men’s basketball coach Anthony Grant sent a powerful message to Ohio bettors after his team’s win over Davidson on Tuesday: “Take a step back and re-evaluate your priorities.”

Without getting into specifics, Grant made clear his players have been dealing with the repercussions of Ohio sports betting being legalized at the start of the new year.

“There’s some laws that have recently been enacted that really to me, it could really change the landscape of what college sports is all about. And when we have people that make it about themselves and attack kids because of their own agenda, it sickens me,” an emotional Grant said during his postgame presser. “They have families. They don’t deserve that. Mental health is real. So if you’re a Flyer fan, I ask you just to understand what you’re dealing with with young people.”

In response, Ohio Casino Control Commission executive director Matt Schuler suggested during a Wednesday meeting the commission look into banning state bettors who direct violent comments at college athletes on social media.

Such an exclusion list would only work to eliminate in-state bettors and bettors who aren’t hiding behind aliases and burner accounts, but it would represent a positive first step.

Dayton is 12-6 on the season and tied for first place in the Atlantic 10, but had a seven-game winning streak snapped by underdog VCU on Friday. The Flyers bounced back to beat Davidson, though they also failed to cover the spread of that game.

It’s despicable that so-called fans care more about whether a team covered than whether they won, but that’s what happens when the stakes include personal finances. Some people handle that a lot better than others. So, as long as betting is allowed in the age of social media, it will be almost impossible to eradicate all hate directed at athletes.

Sadly, Grant’s plea and others like it might be the best solutions short of another ban on sports betting altogether.

Davidson had a stunning backdoor cover with seconds left against Michigan State

Play to the final whistle. You never know what’s possible.

Better late than never. That’s what I was always say.

While Tom Izzo and Co. have shocked the world before, most don’t expect Michigan State (-1) to make a deep run during this Men’s NCAA tournament. Still, bet against the Spartans at your own risk. Even better, bet against their opponents, clearly pulling out all the stops to cover the spread at your peril.

On Friday, that was Davidson. Izzo’s crew held a 74-70 lead with seconds remaining. Michigan State would advance to the second round for the first time since 2019. But the Wildcats had one remaining, and shocking, burst in them.

One halfcourt heave pass to Lee Hyun-jung and one three to rule them all to cover a tiny spread.

Wow. Shoutout to the Davidson men for playing to the final whistle. They could’ve simply inbounded the ball, run the clock out, and moved on with their lives. Instead, they pushed for the slightest percent chance of an upset and made Michigan State -1 bettors overjoyed everywhere.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Former Michigan State basketball PG Foster Loyer goes off

Foster Loyer had a career-high game, posting insane numbers!

Foster Loyer made the decision this past offseason to transfer from the Michigan State basketball program. Loyer ended up making the decision to head to the state of North Carolina to play for the Davidson Wildcats.

Loyer has found himself a comfortable role in the starting lineup with the Wildcats, and is starting to showcase his skills at the point guard position.

In a game against Northeastern, Loyer went absolutely nuts, scoring a career-high 35 points on 10-for-18 shooting, 8-of-12 being from beyond the 3-point line.

Spartan fans will be cheering on Loyer and the Wildcats as his season progresses.

Texas Basketball: Five things we learned from the Maui Invitational

UT’s season began in spectacular fashion, winning the Camping World Maui Invitational. Here are three things we learned from the tournament.

Texas’ season began in spectacular fashion, winning the Camping World Maui Invitational. Wins over Davidson, Indiana and North Carolina have already put Shaka Smart in an excellent position to make the NCAA Tournament.

Tight games against Davidson and North Carolina were outside a historic blowout of Indiana. The Longhorns showed how dangerous they can be on the offensive end while playing energetic, lockdown defense.

Now, Texas will move onto the rest of the nonconference schedule and conference play. A game against Villanova plus Big 12 opponents are going to be quite the mountain to climb. The journey has just begun for the Longhorns.

Here are three things we learned in Texas’ championship run:

Texas Basketball: Longhorns narrowly defeat Davidson in Maui Invitational opener

UT’s 78-76 win over Davidson in the Maui Invitational sees them to the second round. The Wildcats had two chances to hit game-winning shots.

Texas’ perfect record remained intact after a 78-76 win over Davidson in the first round of the Maui Invitational. The Wildcats had two opportunities to hit game-winning shots with under five seconds but forward Sam Mennenga miss both.

Courtney Ramey played the hero role for the Longhorns, finding a way to the basketball to hit the game-winning layup with 0:19 left. He finished the game as the leading scorer, having 14 points on 4-11 shooting.

Defensively, Texas struggled with Davidson’s size early in the game. Mennenga was efficient all game, shooting 60%, including 4-4 from inside the three-point line.

Once Shaka Smart when towards a bigger lineup, including Kai Jones and Brock Cunningham, the defense got better. The Longhorns were also able to crash the offensive glass, securing 13 rebounds off their missed shots.

The most encouraging statistic from the win over Davidson is Texas’ 18 assists. Last season, the Longhorns ranked last in the Big 12 in assists per game, averaging 9.9. On Monday afternoon, Matt Coleman was excellent at distributing the ball, having nine assists.

Player of the game – Kai Jones

His final slash line of 13/1/2 may not raise any eyebrows but it was more about what will not show up on the stat sheet. Jones was able to bring a big presence on the defensive end, contesting Davidson shots better.

Looking back to the stats, and Jones did not miss a shot all afternoon. He went two for two from deep and rocked the rim a couple of times as well. An athletic 6-11 forward who has range is always a plus to have.

Highlights

Next up – Indiana/Providence at 12:30 pm

CST on ESPN

Indiana and Providence tipped off shortly after Texas got their win. Both the Hoosiers, out of the Big Ten, and the Friars, out of the Big East, will be excellent early season tests for the Longhorns in the second round.

Either way, the game will take play at 12:30 pm CST on ESPN. Hopefully, there will be more quality time spent with Bill Walton.

Turnovers cost the Wolf Pack against a hot shooting Wildcats team.

Hot handed Davidson gives Nevada it’s second loss in a row.

An earlier game then most of us were used to west of Texas, the Wolf Pack traveled to North Carolina to take on the Davidson Wildcats at home. The Wildcats were picked to finish second in the Atlantic-10 this season and were looking for their second straight win on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats couldn’t miss and went a combined 55% from the field and 46% from behind the three point line. Guessing who would lead the Wildcats in scoring was tricky, and they didn’t disappoint.

But in the end it was junior guard Kellan Grady who ended an impressive night with 24 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. But the all conference guard had help, and that help came from sophomore forward Luka Brajkovic who chipped in 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The third member of their triple threat scoring attack on Tuesday was reigning A-10 player of the year Jon Axel Gudmundsson who ended the night with 18 points. Those three combined for more than half of the teams final score, but knocking down shots was only half of the battle, the Wildcats also forced 21 turnovers.

Nevada left John M. Belk arena with their second straight loss and the aforementioned turnovers and poor shooting attributed to that. The Wolf Pack managed to knock down over half of their field goals but went 5-15 from three. Making half of your field goals could hardly be looked at as a bad thing but when you turn the ball over 21 times, you forfeit possible scoring opportunities and Davidson took advantage of those turnovers and scored.

Lindsey Drew had maybe the best shooting performance of Nevada’s scoring guards going 5/9 on the night but that only equated to a team high 14 points. Jazz Johnson and Jalen Harris both added 13 points, but Harris had the better night on the stat sheet going 6/10 from the field and grabbing 9 rebounds in the process. We knew this Nevada team would have some growing pains with an almost completely new roster and new coaching staff this year, and forecasted this a bit in an article posted before the season started below.

But the Wolf Pack made shots, they just gave their opponent the ball back more times then they got it back and killed possible scoring possessions in the process. Scoring isn’t the main issue, and one bright spot in this game was senior guard Nisre Zouzoua who had 13 points and went 6/6 from the free throw line.

He has shown some life off of the bench in a couple of games this season. On a team who has very little scoring capability outside of Drew, Harris and Johnson. Now this game had it’s components to work on, but this was also a tough game many of us covering the conference were anticipating and the Wolf Pack just couldn’t come away the win.

What’s next: The Wolf Pack face the Fordham Rams in the first game of the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Friday at 3:15 PM EST/12:15 PM PST. The Rams are currently undefeated but the Wolf Pack will be their first real test of the season. The Ram’s have some capable scorers and rebounders in their front court, make sure to check out the summary of this game and more about the Rams and other possible opponents in the Paradise Jam in our Future hoops foes article below.

The Nevada Wolf Pack return to action as they travel to North Carolina to take on the Davidson Wildcats of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The contest between the Wolf Pack and the Wildcats will be on Tuesday night with tip-off of 5pm Pacific Standard Time.

The Wolf Pack return to action after a loss at home against the USC Trojans on Saturday night. Despite a wonderful performance by Wolf Pack guard Jazz Johnson (26 points). the Wolf Pack could not handle USC’s front court players as Nevada fell by a score of 76-66 to the Trojans.

The Wolf Pack now head east to face off against a Davidson team coming off a 87-49 victory over UNC Wilmington last Saturday. Davidson’s victory over UNC-Wilmington was the Wildcats first win of the 2019-2020 season as they have suffered losses against Auburn and UNC-Charlotte. Davidson is looking to extend their winning streak to two games as they host the Wolf Pack on Tuesday night.

Davidson has a balanced scoring attack as they have five players who are averaging at least 10 points per game. Junior guard Carter Collins leads the Wildcats in the scoring category as he is averaging 15.5 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. Another player to keep an eye on for Davidson is guard Luke Frampton. Frampton, from Poca, West Virginia, is averaging 11.8 points per game and is shooting almost 53 percent from the three-point line.

Davidson is looking to use their balanced scoring attack to improve their record to 2-2. Can the Wolf Pack bounce back from a loss to secure a road victory as they start their 10 day road trip on Tuesday night.
