Texas Basketball: Five things we learned from the Maui Invitational

UT’s season began in spectacular fashion, winning the Camping World Maui Invitational. Here are three things we learned from the tournament.

This bench is loaded

A starting five of Matt Coleman, Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones, Greg Brown, and Jase Febres is a fantastic one. However, Texas has the ability to go four deep from the bench. This year’s team is not only Shaka’s Smart’s best team but it is his deepest team.

Kai Jones makes the most impact off the bench. He can play as the big man in the lineup or link up with Jase Febres while the Longhorns play bigger. Jones is incredibly efficient from the floor and is a presence down low, blocking shots and getting rebounds.

Brock Cunningham and Royce Hamm are unsung heroes who will do wonders for Texas this season. The two do all the dirty work, locking down on defense, fighting for possession, and being able to shoot when called upon.

Add Gerald Liddell and Texas will never have a weak link on the court. If foul trouble starts to become a problem throughout the year, Smart will have plenty of options off the bench.
