Texas Basketball: Five things we learned from the Maui Invitational

UT’s season began in spectacular fashion, winning the Camping World Maui Invitational. Here are three things we learned from the tournament.

Do not just need 3-pointers to win games

Texas did not shoot the 3-ball particularly well against Davidson and Indiana, being under 30%. It got better against North Carolina, going 9-22 but the Longhorns proved they do not need to rely on 3-pointers to win basketball games this season.

Over the three games, Texas shot 51% from inside the arc. Compare that to last season’s 46.4% in Big 12 play (eighth in the conference) and that can be the difference in games. Kai Jones in particular was fantastic, going 7-8 through the three games.

Lack of offense was the reason Shaka Smart’s team struggled last season. If the efficiency inside the arc continues, the deep ball is going to be there. With that improving throughout the team as well, Texas is going to be a dangerous threat on the offensive end.
