Texas Basketball: Five things we learned from the Maui Invitational

UT’s season began in spectacular fashion, winning the Camping World Maui Invitational. Here are three things we learned from the tournament.

Matt Coleman is the star

Leading the way in scoring throughout the tournament, Coleman had 10, 16, and 22 in the three games. When Shaka Smart knew he needed a big-time bucket, the senior’s name was called upon. He delivered every time, especially in the championship game against North Carolina.

The three-headed monster of Coleman, Courtney Ramey, and Andrew Jones is real. However, it is quite clear who is playing the best out of that trio. Coleman has been on a different level to begin this season. Scoring has not been his only contribution: He averaged five assists throughout Maui.

Coleman’s form left off where he picked up from last season, being in double figures in four out of the last five games. Now, he leads Texas in scoring and is atop the assists category, averaging five per game. If Coleman can continue this throughout the entire season, he may see his name on the All-Big 12 first team.
