Panthers’ updated roster following Tuesday’s moves

The Panthers added LB Tae Davis and OT David Sharpe to their active roster on Tuesday. Leaving the group will be G Calvin Throckmorton.

The Carolina Panthers parted ways with their starting left guard on Tuesday, releasing Calvin Throckmorton after eight games. But they also made a couple of additions to the active roster as well.

Joining in will be linebacker Tae Davis and offensive tackle David Sharpe, who was promoted from the practice squad a day after his return.

So, let’s take an updated look at the current roster for the Panthers:

Panthers sign LB Tae Davis, OT David Sharpe to active roster

The Panthers have added LB Tae Davis and OT David Sharpe to their active roster.

The Carolina Panthers opened up a spot on their active roster on Tuesday, as they announced the release of starting left guard Calvin Throckmorton. They’ve also announced who will be filling that spot.

Joining the locker room will be linebacker Tae Davis. The 27-year-old defender was released by the Atlanta Falcons last week.

Davis, who played his college ball for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2018. He recorded five starts over 18 games in New York between 2018 and 2019—amassing 33 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks, five quarterback hits and a forced fumble.

He’d then sign on with the Cleveland Browns after being waived in the middle of the 2019 campaign. Davis ultimately chalked up a pair of stints for Cleveland, where he notched 12 tackles over 27 contests.

The six-foot, 222-pounder played in eight games for Atlanta this season, with 174 of his 175 total snaps coming on special teams.

Carolina also promoted offensive tackle David Sharpe, who was signed to the practice squad on Monday, back to the active roster.

Panthers’ updated 16-man practice squad after addition of David Sharpe

Here’s what the Panthers’ practice squad now looks like after Monday’s return of OT David Sharpe:

On Monday, the Carolina Panthers left a spot on their practice squad open after signing rookie outside linebacker Eku Leota to their active roster. But, they wouldn’t take long to fill it.

Offensive tackle David Sharpe, who was released last week, has now returned as a member of the group.

Here’s an updated look at the squad:

Panthers sign Eku Leota to active roster, David Sharpe to practice squad

The Panthers have added OLB Eku Leota to their active roster and brought back OT David Sharpe as a member of the practice squad.

One of the better stories from the summer of 2023 now has a new chapter.

The Carolina Panthers announced on Monday afternoon that they have signed rookie outside linebacker Eku Leota to their active roster. Leota, who’s seen action over the last three outings, had been a member of the team’s practice squad throughout the season.

An Asheville, N.C. native, Leota spent his four collegiate campaigns between Northwestern University and the University of Auburn. From 2019 to 2022, he recorded 66 total tackles (25.0 for a loss), 15.5 sacks and three forced fumbles over 32 games.

After going undrafted this spring, the 6-foot-3, 252-pounder joined his hometown Panthers. Despite standing out during the summer, Leota would be cut during the team’s crackdown to their initial 53-man roster. He signed back to their practice squad a day later.

Leota is fresh off his highest snap count of the year, where he was in on 32 defensive looks in last Thursday night’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

To fill Leota’s vacancy on the practice squad, the Panthers signed offensive tackle David Sharpe to the group. Sharpe, who had been on the active roster since Week 1, was released last Wednesday.

Panthers release OT David Sharpe

The Panthers released OT David Sharpe just a day ahead of their Week 10 matchup with the Bears.

A little known rule has, in part, cost offensive tackle David Sharpe his spot on the Carolina Panthers roster.

As announced by the team on Wednesday afternoon, about 30 hours ahead of their Week 10 matchup against the Chicago Bears, Sharpe has been released. The move opens up an extra spot on the active roster, which may be of use on the short turnaround for the Thursday night showdown.

That aforementioned rule comes into play as a result of Luiji Vilain’s placement on injured reserve. Carolina would’ve needed the outside linebacker, who was signed off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad on Oct. 24, to spend at least three weeks on the roster for his spot to be filled.

While Sharpe’s release cuts the group down to 51 of a possible 53 players, Vilain’s absence still leaves the Panthers with just one vacancy for the week.

Sharpe, originally a practice squad addition at the beginning of September, appeared in two games this season.

Panthers add OT David Sharpe to active roster

The Panthers promoted OT David Sharpe from the practice squad on Monday, bringing their active roster to a full 53 players.

They needed a little bit of extra time, but the Carolina Panthers have gotten themselves to a 53-man program.

As announced by the team on Monday afternoon, offensive tackle David Sharpe has been promoted to the active roster. The 6-foot-6, 343-pounder was signed to the practice squad back on Sept. 1.

Sharpe was a 2017 fourth-round pick of the then-Oakland Raiders. The University of Florida product, who spent three years in Gainesville, played in five games during his rookie campaign—two of which were starts.

After being waived at the beginning of his second NFL season, Sharpe proceeded to bounce around over the next handful of years. He’s since chalked up short stints with the Houston Texans, a second with the Raiders, the then-Washington Football Team and the Baltimore Ravens.

His last regular-season outing came in 2021 with Baltimore. He appeared in four games that year, totaling 67 offensive snaps and 15 on special teams.
