Texas Football Recruiting: 2022 target commits to Ohio State over Texas, Clemson, LSU, Oklahoma

Ohio State continued their dominance on the recruiting trail Tuesday. Dasan McCullough, a four-star from Kansas, committed to the Buckeyes.

Ohio State continued their dominance on the recruiting trail, this time going to the 2022 class. Dasan McCullough, a four-star prospect from Kansas, committed to the Buckeyes Tuesday afternoon, their fifth of the class.

McCullough is listed as an athlete on 247Sports but is projected to play a role in the secondary. He has played safety, outside corner, and over the slot corner during his time in high school. Former cornerbacks coach and now defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs will have a fun time utilizing him.

Listed at 6-5 and 220 pounds, the rising junior in high school has good size to play safety instead of cornerback. He could even creep down further into the box, using his athleticism and tackling ability to make plays for Ohio State.

At the time of commitment, McCullough received 43 offers from some of the best in the country. Back in June, the four-star dropped a top 10 consisting of Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC.

After Quinn Ewers committed to Texas, McCullough showed the Longhorns some love, tweeting out an orange heart and a couple of ‘Hook ’em’ signs.

Going for a top-three class in 2022 is going to be difficult for the Longhorns, especially if Ryan Day can continue on the path the Buckeyes are currently on. Five prospects are already committed to Ohio State for 2022 and are all top 150 guys.

Texas had landed Ewers, the No. 1 player in the country, and four-star wide receiver Phaizon Wilson. The Longhorns are just getting started on the 2022 train and will be competing with the Buckeyes for top players throughout the class.

Ohio State gets huge commitment from 4-star 2022 linebacker out of Kansas

Ohio State got a huge commitment from 4-star linebacker Dasan McCullough out of Kansas for the class of 2022 Tuesday.

Ohio State football continues to grab some momentum in the 2020 recruiting cycle despite the finishing touches of the 2021 class still being put in place.

That continued on Tuesday when four-star prospect Dasan McCullough announced his verbal commitment to Ryan Day and Ohio State.

Out of Overland Park, Kansas, the 6-foot, 5-inch, 220-pound athlete projects as a linebacker in Columbus. He is long, rangy, and has great coverage and tackling skills that will continue to develop once in the program. He is the No. 1 prospect out of Kansas, No. 7 ranked athlete, and No. 70 overall prospect in the entire class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

McCullough becomes the fifth member of the 2022 recruiting class for the Buckeyes, and although it’s early, one that ranks as the No. 2 class in the country behind only LSU.

Five 2022 recruits Texas should push for after Quinn Ewers

Getting Quinn Ewers was hopefully just the first domino of top players coming to Austin. Here are five 2022 recruits Texas should push for.

Texas’ recruiting class for the 2022 class has started off on a fantastic foot, landing four-star wide receiver Phaizon Wilson and five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Of course, Ewers is the big name that everyone in the country has taken notice of. Coaches, fellow 2022 recruits, and even a current Texas A&M player have expressed how big of a commitment Ewers is for the Texas program.

Now, Tom Herman and his recruiting staff must take the opportunity to push for another top-five recruiting class. Getting Ewers was hopefully just the first domino of many top players coming to Austin in the 2022 class.

Here are five recruits Texas should push for after landing Quinn Ewers on Friday afternoon:

Chiefs players mentoring son of RB coach Deland McCullough

Dasan McCullough is a 4-star defensive back at Blue Valley North and he’s learning from some of the best in the NFL.

Kansas City Chiefs running back coach Deland McCullough has three sons who all aspire to become professional football players. His oldest son Deland McCullough II plays at his alma mater, Miami (Ohio). His two youngest sons, Daeh and Dasan, are still in high school playing at Blue Valley North in Olathe, Kansas.

McCullough has since found a balance between playing the role of coach and playing the role of dad.

“I play the middle,” McCullough told reporters in late May. “The thing is — and I don’t want to sound like a typical guy — when they told me years and years ago that they wanted to play this game I told them, ‘If you’re going to play it, you’re going to play it at a high level.’ That’s just what the expectation is in this house. If you’re going to participate in something you’re going to try and be the best. Those guys have all embraced that — working hard. My 17-year-old, he just came back from working out and talking with coaches. These guys are just embracing the whole process. We sit up and watch tape together — we watched some Chiefs’ tape last night. They’re always doing things to make themselves better. I always tell them every day, ‘What are you doing to make yourself better?'”

One opportunity that the McCullough boys have taken full advantage of is their proximity to some of the best players in the NFL. They’ve had the chance to meet and learn from many Chiefs players. Dasan, who is a four-star defensive back and sought after recruit, recently detailed some of his experiences learning from Tyrann Mathieu just days prior to Super Bowl LIV.

“Tyrann Mathieu is probably who I’m closest with because he’s on the defensive side. He actually sat down, and we talked for a second – just about the game and football in general,” Dasan told Zack Carpenter of Eleven Warriors. “He’s definitely my biggest one who gives me more advice than anyone else. It was nothing crazy, I would say (the night after the Super Bowl). It was really just teaching me about patience and making the right decisions.

“Obviously, we all know he did some stuff he shouldn’t have done in college, so he was telling me you have to stay focused. You can’t mess up and make a mistake like that, especially now. Coaches will just ignore a player that made that mistake. Luckily, he got a second chance, but he wanted to make sure I make the right decisions and stay on the right track.”

Mathieu still is giving advice to Dasan and is helping him see the game in a different light. But Mathieu isn’t the only player that Dasan had an opportunity to interact with. He’s hit the practice field and worked against some of the running backs in his dad’s room like Darwin Thompson. He’s even lined up against players like Mecole Hardman and Travis Kelce at Blue Valley North.

“I have a really good relationship with them, especially Kelce and the running backs,” Dasan said. “Tyreek, Mecole and Kelce. Those are the real top three. Some of the running backs like Darwin I’ve gone up against. I only guarded Mecole once. He was definitely a real bad dude. Him and Tyreek.”

Then there’s Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes. How many high school athletes can say they’ve had a few passes defended against a Super Bowl MVP?

“I’ve got a couple pass breakups, but I’ve never picked him off. Not yet,” Dasan said of Mahomes. “I mean, it’s pretty cool because you’re basically going against pros – not even basically. You are going against pros. The best receivers and the best quarterback in the NFL. What high schooler can give you that type of work?”

The answer is not many and it’s just a footnote on a laundry list of reasons that Dasan has received offers from schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Oregon, and many more. He has a bright future and if he continues to seek knowledge from the players that his dad works with, it will only help him on his own path to greatness.

The commitment, success and growth that Deland McCullough has seen from all of his sons throughout the recruiting process has also created one proud football dad.

“One thing I guess I can say in conclusion during this recruiting process for these guys, the feedback I’ve been getting from coaches has been like, man,” McCullough said pridefully. “These guys are like years ahead of their peers as far as their demeanor and just their football IQ. It’s been good to watch them.”

Texas offers top 2022 player from Kansas

Texas has offered four-star ATH Dasan McCullough. Ranked a four-star prospect, he is the top-rated player in the class to come out of Kansas.

The Longhorns have offered 2022 athlete Dasan McCullough out of Leawood, Kansas. Ranked a four-star prospect by 247Sports, he is the top-rated player in the class to come out of the state of Kansas. Coming in at 6 feet 4 inches and 205 pounds, McCullough’s main position at Blue Valley North High School is safety.

If McCullough were to sign with the Longhorns, he would be the highest-rated recruit from the state of Kansas to ever play at Texas. Linebacker Gary Johnson who played two seasons in 2017 and 2018 was recruited from Dodge City Community College in Kansas but was originally from Birmingham, AL.

Kansas and Oklahoma are the only other two Big 12 schools to offer McCullough. Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and LSU from the SEC have also reached out, while other big-time programs like Florida State, Michigan, and Oregon have also offered him.

Over the next two recruiting cycles, the Longhorns have already offered six other safeties. If McCullough were to stay at the position, he would just add to the possible depth for Texas.
